If there was one person who was in touch with the current goings-on of the city, it was one Natalie Kurono. She enjoyed keeping up with the latest gossip, making it her business to be in the know. The latest drama caused by those Halycon city refugees had been in the news a lot, and for the moment it was keeping her entertained, but she was always looking for another story.

New businesses opening on the island usually weren't a special occurrence she paid attention to. Though, when a big, global corporation set up shop, that was occasionally worth a look. So when Nat heard about the new House of Volkov restaurant, she figured she'd do a little bit of digging, not expecting to see much.

What she found, however, definitely caught her interest.

The restaurant itself seemed legit, she couldn't find much incriminating coming out of it. But the company bankrolling it, however, there was a lot of dirt surrounding it. Nothing concrete, nothing that could be proven, but her more illicit sources all seemed to say they were more than a little shady.

Nat was reformed now, she wasn't the same person she was when she'd first became a youkai. She didn't feel the same burning fury at organised crime she felt back then. Besides, these weren't the first shady people to show up on the island, she'd been keeping her eye of plenty of others.

Of course, she did still enjoy ruffling a few feathers, and a global mafia was sure to have plenty of feathers to ruffle. She found herself smiling at the opportunity.

It was late in the evening when Nat strolled into the House of Volkov. She'd dressed for the occasion, wearing what looked like an expensive black dress, open at the back and accenting her body well, and had a small purse hanging off her shoulder. She approached the front, speaking to one of the employees at the entrance.

"Hi! I'm a writer with the Manta Carlos Print, I'm writing a column on up-and-coming businesses." She lied with an animated smile, raising her voice a few octaves higher, giving her an almost ditzy sounding speech. "My boss wanted me to get a report on this place. Is the owner around? I was hoping I could ask him a few questions."

If she wanted to make this more legit, she supposed she could have arranged for a proper appointment, but she didn't want to give these guys a chance to prepare for her, she wanted to try and take them by surprise.

Once again, Rada had seemly (and knowing her - probably deliberately) tried to get a rise out of him. It was becoming quite rare that a week didn't go by that the two didn't end up fighting - quite literally as well as figuratively - about something. Usually it was about her lack of apparent freedom and unfair treatment. Although today, it had been about the possible arrival of his bride-to-be.

Making his way across the restaurant, stopping to greet various guests and business associates, Malakias heard a woman asking the hostess (rather loudly and obnoxiously he surmised) if she could talk to the owner, and that she was from the Manta Carlos Print, the island first and foremost newspaper.

Frowning slightly at this, Malakias decided to intervene since Amy, the hostess, had instructions to never bother him unless it was important, and talking to the press fell in the "not overly important" category. Also, he had the feeling the woman would not be above making a scene, something he tried to avoid as much as possible.

"I am Malakias Volkov. The owner of the House of Volkov. How can I be of service?" he enquired of the young woman as he took in her appearance. The wolf/canine side of Malakias, frowned at the cat/feline side of the woman before him. However, he was quick to hide his reservations, Never trust a cat, he thought. Call it superstition or whatever, but Malakias had a thing about felines and putting any real trust in one.

Her cat ears perked up as she heard his voice, she turned her attention from the staff over to the source, flashing him another smile.

"Hello there! I'm Natalie Kurono." She extended a hand for him to shake, her voice tinged with the smallest Japanese accent she could never quite suppress. "As I was telling the hostess here, I write for the local newspaper. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about your restaurant? Its so fancy! I promise it will only take a few moments out of your time."

She kept that same tone of voice, her body language moving to match. She presented herself as excited but thoughtless, almost a little dumb, like some young, inexperienced, over eager reporter who just wanted to try the food. However, her eyes were dressing down Malakias much in the same way he was doing to her. He seemed stern, and from the way he quickly hid his expression, very in control of himself. Nat thought he might be a hard nut to crack, but the hard nuts were always the most fun.

"Ms. Kurono," Malakias said evenly as he extended his hand to shake hers in greeting. Regarding her as she spoke, Malakias raised an eyebrow at the dumb inexperienced reporter act, not quite sure he actually believed that such a creature would be writing for such a serious and respectable newspaper.

Relenting a bit at her apparent eagerness and against, perhaps, his better judgment, he decided that he could spare the young woman a few minutes of his time. Looking at his watch, he saw that he had time before Maxim arrived to discuss business.

"I do have a few moments to spare, if you'd care to join me," he told her as he quietly instructed Amy to tell Maxim where he was and who he was with when he arrived. Then with a polite smile, he gestured with a tiny sweeping hand motion that she should follow him to a booth that was quiet but also afforded him a good view of the floor and those around him.

"Can I offer you a drink, Ms. Kurono?" he asked politely, adding at the same time, "I'd recommend the flavoured vodkas, they are distilled here in-house."

Nat sauntered after him, tails swishing behind her as she glanced around the room, taking in the decorations, the people, the atmosphere. It looked as high class as she had heard, and while she was still faking her enthusiasm, she had to admit it was the kind of place she'd like to dine in often.

"I'd love one, thank you." She slid into the booth, sitting across from him. She put her purse down next to her and reached inside. Her finger pressed down on the small plastic button of one of her recording devices before she grabbed onto the pen and pad she'd brought with her, pulling it out and setting it on the table in front of her.

"Maybe we could have a couple before we begin?" She casually suggested, giving him a disarming smile, batting her eyelashes a couple time. "It helps to be comfortable for these kinds of things after all. Besides, I can't really write much about the restaurant if I don't sample some of what's available, right?"

Even if this little investigation was meant to be serious, she thought it was worth throwing the idea out there. She never was one to pass up a chance to indulge her stomach.

A tiny smile tugged at the edges of Malakias mouth as he listened politely to Miss Kurono. He was slightly amused at her bubbly and seemingly open and honest personality. In fact, Malakias found himself agreeing quietly with her that - yes, it was hard to write about a restaurant if she didn't try a sampling of the menu with their drinks.

At this, he then hailed a passing waiter and ordered him to bring three different flavoured vodkas in small half bottles along with a tasting menu for two of six of the restaurants most popular dishes. Something that was not on the menu, and which would infuriate Rada, but which he knew the waiter would not question and just relay back to the kitchen much to his sister's dismay and probably frustrated anger.

"I have ordered us a tasting menu. That way you can try a little bit of a few of our most popular dishes as well as three of our most requested vodkas," he explained as they waited for the drinks to arrive.

"Here are your drinks, Mr. Volkov," the waiter said referentially as he set 6 iced shot glasses on the table along with the smallish decanters of vodka, "This first is a vanilla cinnamon, the second sweet lemon basil, and the last birch syrup flavoured," he said as he poured each one, placed the decanters off to the side and left.

Nat's eyes lit up as the waiter presented the drinks, smile widening as she nodded to him in thanks.

"Thank you, so generous of you." She said to Malakias, taking one of the glasses in her hand, holding it forward as if to toast him. Then without further ado, she down the shot in one, clearly someone who was accustomed to her liquor.

"I love my job sometimes." She thought to herself, clasping her hands and resting them on the table.

"It goes down real smooth." She commented idly, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ears as she talked. "You must have quite the talented people working here if you're so confident in your food and drinks, especially for such a new restaurant."

Picking up his own chilled shot glass, Malakias started with the Birch flavour and raised it slightly in response to Natalie's toast. Downing it in one go just as she had, Malakias smiled appreciatively at the fact that she had so easily drank the vodka, and seemed to know and appreciate the quality of the product.

"It's smooth because it's been filtered a few times to remove any impurities," he told her, "bad vodka is bad because of how it's made, not with what it's made," he informed her as his hand hovered lightly on the next two shots as he considered his next choice.

"Confidence comes from knowing we have a good product and it fits the market well," he stated easily, "the rest just comes naturally," Malakias said as he sat back and regarded the young woman as he spoke, noting the fact that she was very attractive as he watched her brush a strand of hair out of her face.

"I see." She kept the smile on her face, watching him watch her. Nat was still having trouble getting a proper read on him, but if he seemed to enjoy looking at her, she could possibly play that to her advantage. She kept that in the back of her mind for later.

"You sound like you have experience in the matter." She said, picking up another shot glass, letting the liquid swirl a little inside, before downing it in the same manner she did the first. "I wouldn't guess that from someone so young."

She put the glass down, then pick up her pen and pad, resting back in her seat, one leg crossed over the other. He looked like he was fairly relaxed, so she thought she might throw a couple questions out there, just to ease him into answering.

"Have you had much prior business experience before coming to the island, Mr Volkov?"

Malakias decided on the lemon basil shot finally and picked it up, but this time, he actually sipped it, savouring the citrusy notes along with the hint of basil. "I have been working alongside my father for years now, learning the ins and outs of the restaurant and distillation industry," he told Natalie very calmly as he deliberately held her gaze as they talked.

"His insight and business acumen has been invaluable," he added as he finished his vodka just as their food arrived at the table. The waiter placing two plates with cutlery before each of them.

"Tonight, we have Beef Stroganoff, Makarony po-flotski, Pelmeni, Pirozhki, Syrniki, and Veal Orlov." he said explaining each and every dish on the tasting menu and offering suggestions on how to eat it.

When he was done, first he bowed his head slightly to Malakias and then smiled at nodded to Natalie. "Enjoy your dinner."
