It was mid afternoon when Charlie and Samara reached the cave, following a slim path through the forbidden forest. Unfortunately Charlie's tail, the Sarcophagus, made the path slightly wider, but it was still almost invisible against the bulk of the forest. That was one of the advantages. The tree foliage and thorny brush ensured that the cave was not the lair of one of the many strange creatures which made their home in the woods, and kept out unwanted indtruders. It was quiet. The Autumn foliage hung on the trees like brushstrokes of vivid oranges and red, with brief interludes of green where the evergreen trees poked through the foliage.

The cave jutted out of the earth like the curved hand of some strange god, a strange stone mound, about the size of a bus, within the clearing. The top was covered in a strange moss. The entrance was circular, like an archway, almost as if it had been carved by hand. Just inside the entrance, illuminated by the mid afternoon sun, was what appeared to be a firepit, several rocks. But instead of ashes and the charred remains of branches, the pit appeared to be filled with a dark liquid, which bubbled up from inside the firepit. Nearby was a large boulder, larger than the entrance itself, which appeared to have been roughly carved into shape. But that wasn't the strangest thing. The clearing was slightly warmed than the chill of the forest, and as they approached the cave, it only got warmer.

"We're here, said Charlie to his serpentine compatriot. Samara was a strangely enthralling cobra-like lamia, one of the arore sisters who had appeared on the island. After promising to show her the cave, he had met up her at the Forbidden Zone, a fascinating darkly themed cafe, where Samara worked as a barista. He wasn't one for coffee, but Charlie did enjoy the amusing tea names. Frankenstein's Corpse Raiser indeed. It was an interesting black tea blend. He had provided Samara with an imaculate hand drawn map, a copy of the one which he had in his breast pocket.

"This is the place" Charlie said with a beaming smile.

Samara played with the hoodie she wore. It was immense, enough to look baggy on her even if it was impossible for her to trip on it or lose herself in it. For such a giant snake, she was surprisingly silent as she followed Charlie through the underbrush.

Every noise he or anything else in the forest made was enough to have Samara's hood threatening to pop. The truth was, she didn't trust Liches or necromancers. It was a product of her previous living environment. But, Samara liked to see herself as more forward thinking than her many sisters. Maybe, often, to the point of stubbornness. It was a point of soreness in her life.

When they'd managed to arrive at the little cave, Charlie had told her about (admittedly, Samara wasn't sure she'd believed him at first. She was quite wary but her willingness to come along proved her well).

She slithered in to inspect it. Truly a marvel, though she could tell it wasn't entirely natural. Magic swam here, but she didn't point it out. It didn't feel of death, but nature and warmth. As far as Sam could tell, it was safe.

"Thank you, Charlie. Thisss will ssserve me well on the nights the moon issss full." She looked over her shoulder at him, face turning a deep purple at having to talk about one of her many downfalls. "It'sss sssomewhat embaresssing."

"Oh it's fine" said Charlie with a smile "things like this are more common than you'd think. Its a bit like being a werewolf really"

He gestured with one hand to the large stone which sat next to the entrance.

"You can roll the stone infront of the entrance, and this place is very secluded, noone's around for miles, so you won't be disturbed by anyone"

He walked inside the cave, taking care not to tread in the firepit. It was much warmer here, like a sauna. He turned clockwise and bent down to inspect the rocks. He curled his fingers around the edge of a large flat rock, and moved it aside. Beneath, recessed into the ground, it was a military green metal trunk, stamped with the word 'STEIN' in stencled. Charlie popped a pair of fasteners and opened the lid, with a sound of metal on metal. Inside were several neat plastic containers, each sealed and airtight.

"This is where i store all the bits and pieces i need when i come here, anything that the heat won't get too. It's mainly got tea and marshmallows, and some of the ingredients to make dough in it at the moment, and a couple of skewers to roast them over the fire, but i can drop off some basic cooking things and a few canned items so you can have some food while you're here."

He began to move a few rocks that had been knocked away by the wind or rain back into position around the fireplace.

"If you do bring stuff, just make sure to keep it in the plastic containers, or else it could attract wild animals. Thats why it's in the box under the rock."

Charlie moved the final rock back into position around the fireplace and stood up to smile at his work.

"If you would like, i could send one of my undead, an non-human looking one, that would obey your orders and do things like collect firewood for you?" Said Charlie, smiling kindly at Samara.

Samara wasn't sure about the kindness. She also wasn't sure about letting anyone know where her hiding place was. Not even her sisters knew she had one.

She cocked her head to the right when he went and opened a metal container hidden by stone and peered in. Samara fully expected to see body bits or other magical components. She hadn't expected what she assumed to be food. She didn't know what marshmallows were, but they didn't sound like something her body could handle well, so she gave a polite shake of her head when they were brought up.

"No, it's fine. Thisss will work nicely for me. I would rather not have anyone around, Undead or otherwissse. I won't be in a position to cook or command..." she frowned at the thought, but quickly hid her displeasure.

"Assss for a fire... it would be better not to kindle one with the entrance blocked. I might die of the fumes."

And then Samara sat with an awkward sort of silence for far too long. She wrung her hands thoughtfully and looked from the cave to Charlie and back again. "It isss very kind of you to help me in thisss way, but I mussst wonder what it iss that you desssire from thisss transsaction."

"Ah i understand, i keep forgetting people need to breathe" said Charlie with a kind laugh. He really did. He knew he wasn't human, but it was all the little human things he kept forgetting about. Humans needed to drink water, they needed to eat healthy, they needed to breathe

"What i desire?" Charlie mused for a second on this. Transaction? Were the lamia like the fae and required some sort of bargain? The lamia he had met during his life were not like this, but Samara wasn't like those lamia, she was from another world...

"Honestly, i saw someone in trouble, and found a way to make it okay. Theres no transaction necessary."

Charlie thought for a moment. If she was like the fae, then a gift could be seen as an act of trickery, with some underhanded goal at work. He really disliked that aspect of the fae. It came across as greedy. He had a trick himself to giving gifts to fae...

"If you are sort of compelled to do a trade, like the fae" Charlie said with a kind smile, his blue eyes glowing slightly "then all i ask in return is a rock from the cave that you find interesting."

"It issss fine," Samara told him, seeming a bit uncomfortable nonetheless. Here was this man (not just a man but a Lich no less) who knew where her full-moon place was. Would he take advantage? And if he did, she couldn't tell her sisters, who would have blamed her for being stupid enough to trust him.

"O-Oh," she responded, hand subconsciously holding the clothing on her chest and wringing it.

"If I might sssspeak freely, sir," she gave him a moment as was proper, but spoke freely no matter his answer. "In my homeworld Liches are not good creaturesss. They are ssselfish and will take before they give. Am I incorrect to think that thisss isss the darkest of all magics, even here?"

And then he went on to tell her to bring him something interesting back? Samara looked confused momentarily before shaking her head. "I do not.... understand? I need not repay a debt, though I think it a good thing to do so."

"Liches? Well..." said Charlie, thinking for a moment. It often came back to this. He was the physical manifestation of an evil act. To become a lich, one must break the cycle of life and death, kill a large number and use their souls to power your own, like the starter on a car. Charlie had done many bad things, yes, but he was taking liberal advantage of the island's pardon policy, and trying to turn over a new leaf, to be a better person here.

Charlie sighed.

"Yes, Liches are still the darkest of magic, yes. But not all of them are selfish. Liches are just a microcosm of people. Often the people who become Liches... aren't that great, but not all are bad. I'm trying to be one of the good ones. On your world, all Liches pledge loyalty to... Morgul right?" Charlie said with a smile. He hoped that she wouldn't judge him too harshly on what he was. Manta Carlos was still pretty new to him, but here everyone was surposed to be equal, despite whatever the CAE thought.

"There is no debt to be repayed, i'm simply helping someone in need."

"I ssssee," Samara wondered if her sister would have given the same response. Likely not. Her sister wanted them dead, didn't she? This was giving Sammy a headache. She didn't want to focus on it anymore.

When Charlie asked about her homeworld, Sam gave a kind of unenthused sound that neither confirmed nor denied his question. She rubbed her arms. "I don't know much about it," she lied when finally answering directly.

She figured, if he were really curious he could have asked Corsalyn or someone else. Narraine maybe. But Samara didn't need any more black marks on her person for just being.

"W-Well. Thank you for the help. Thisss will do nicely. I only asssk that you do not return her on the full moon ever. That isss for both our safety and comfort, I think. Will you do thisss thing for me?"

Samara wasn't keen on taking the word of a man she didn't know to heart when she was at her most crazed state, but for now it was all she had. Worst came to worst – well, she needn't think of it.

What Samara said about liches sounded like a like, but Charlie decided not to press further. One of her sisters had threatened him with violence once, asking if he was a servant of a god named Morgul. Charlie had assured her with the words he had repeated so many times over the years. No gods, no masters, no will but my own. Black magic was often taboo after all, people did not wish to talk about it for fear of reprisal or damage to their reputation. He might enquire with Honua about it, next time he saw her.

"Of course, i will not come here during the full moon" assured Charlie. He had seen one of Samara's sisters during a full moon once, and he could understand why she did not wish for anyone, let alone someone male, to be around her during that time. "Thats why i suggested this place, only i know about it, and its extremely difficult to find, so you won't have to worry about any unexpected guests."

"Thank you," Samara said again. Her smile was tighter now as she surveyed the land. "For the hand-drawn map too. That was very kind. Erm, do you mind if we return to the others now?"

It wasn't that Samara was uncomfortable with Charlie being a lich, but she didn't want to sit here and have to keep thinking about the full moon. And wondering if he'd come here. Or if someone else would find her in this crazy new land. Terrifying.
