His boss changed his power set right before it could be useful to her. Incredible. "Boo. I'm going to complain to your manager." This was a joke, of course.

But Jackal seemed like he had something else to take care of. "Okay, thanks for checking in, Jackal. Appreciate you." The call would end, and she would go back outside to see if the detective was here yet. Chloe wanted to go up there with them.

****** ****** ******

When Jackal went around the corner in his apartment, he would find an open window, which usually wasn't open. Uzza was nowhere to be found.

JACKAL

"You're welcome to try," Jackal said, cracking a smile at the very idea.

Of course, Jackal's plan didn't really work out like he'd hoped. He'd hoped to sit down Uzza and talk things out, only the moment he found the window open he realized his mistake, dragging his hand down his face.

"Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck," Jackal groaned, pulling his phone out and calling Chloe right back.

Chloe had barely made it to the stairs when Jackal called her again. She gave her phone a confused look. When he said he would call again 'in a bit,' she expected... Well, certainly more than a minute. Had it even been a minute?

"Hey Jackal, it's been a bit." Deadpan.

JACKAL

Well, crap. There wasn't any nice way to explain this, was there?

"Well, the reason I called earlier was because you showed up at my apartment earlier. Apparently, the you who was in hell is on Manta Carlos, and she's convinced you're trying to murder her. So I called to help ease her concerns, and while I was on the phone she escaped out the window. You know, as you do, apparently."

No sugar coating. Just straight to the point.

Chloe stopped where she was, then slowly walked back up to her room. The last thing she needed was to be interrupted by a detective right now.

"Alright... a lot to unpack, there. Give me a second."

She closed the door behind her, sat down on her bed, and took a deep breath.

"So... First off. She says she's me, but, that doesn't make sense. I should know I wouldn't just run in and try to kill a part of myself. So she has to be hiding something." She could think of several possible things, but there was no sense getting into them now.

"Okay. What was she like? I mean, did she look like me? Did she do anything weird?"

JACKAL

"Uuuuuh," Jackal said less then eloquently. "Her ears were a bit pointier. Her eyes were like... more purple than yours? And she looked kind of like she'd just rolled out of bed."

He hadn't even noticed that some of her clothes were attached.

Oh right.

"And she came through the panties, by the way." Might as well clarify that so Chloe knew just how she'd gotten in.

"She was really convinced you were trying to kill her."

Chloe got pen and paper and noted the details Jackal brought up.

Purple eyes. Pointy ears. Disheveled (?)

Jackal mentioned that she 'came through the panties,' and Chloe did a mental doubletake. "Wait, she did what?" Pure confusion. It took her a moment to figure out. "Oh. I forgot something could crawl out of those... shit."

She had just thought of those panties as a toy. "Well, I guess that explains the panty raid we thought happened. I hope Malara doesn't want to get rid of them..." The possibility really seemed to bum Chloe out.

"Either way though. If she was really scared of me killing her, then I really don't think she's part of me. She's probably something else that just took that part of my soul..." Something like that running around with her face could cause some serious trouble. "Why did she come to you?"

JACKAL

"No idea," Jackal said with a shrug. "If I had to guess, she probably thought I'd take her side against you. That was the vibe I got... well, that and she probably knew I could protect her if the chips were down." Jackal made no secret of the fact that he was a power house. No point pretending otherwise.

"So you don't think she's you? She seemed like you. I mean, she certainly could have passed for... you."

Which was a weird sentence. The whole thing was weird, but it was Manta Carlos levels of weird.

Jackal didn't see it, but Chloe was nodding. It made sense to her that not-Chloe would try to turn people against her.

"She had part of my soul, so it makes sense she could pass as me. But... I mean, she jumped out of the window when you called. If she really had honest intentions, why would she run just because you wanted to talk to me?"

The whole thing was sort of giving him a headache. Chloe was right: they probably didn't have honest intentions. But the question was how any of that really worked. Had a part of Chloe's soul been co-opted? Had something else already eaten it? There were a lot of confusing bits he couldn't quite work out just thinking about it.

"I'm going to go look for her," Jackal said. She wasn't a threat to him, at least physically, and he was hoping to catch up to them before they went underground.
