You seem like a fine young man

A meeting to check out the competition. How exciting! Dorian loved this sort of business, even when it made other people nervous. Maybe that was the thing. Prey didn't know what to do when they went up against predators. Dorian wasn't hostile, no, but his position above most people made them quiver in their boots. For the few minutes he's met him, he knew Vinanye wouldn't.

Truth be told, there was a lot Dorian didn't know about the fae, and he wasn't going to bother doing more research other than the basic etiquette to interact with them because he just didn't give a fuck about stupid other species nonsense. Maybe that was bigoted. He didn't know, but he wasn't bending to anyone's culture. After all, Manta Carlos was the great equalizer, and their heavens, fairy courts and hell kingdoms meant little in this island.

Despite it all, he was looking forward to meeting Vinanye. Definitely. Dorian sat at a lovely garden cafe at the Courtyard, a teapot full of piping hot tea and a plate of crumpets right in front of him. He wasn't drinking any yet. That would be poor manners!

Vinnie thought aa garden cafe was the perfect place to go to meet a future co-worker-- committee person? What would they call it? Who knew! But yes, perfect. The sweet smell of flowers, the taste of good tea. The Gem skipped in with his head rose high, and a basket of flowers hung from the crook of his arm.

Vin was a little late, but this was casual, no? As far as Vinnie was concerned, it was. But casual or not, Vin figured there was no use getting anxious over it. When he approached Dorian, he held out a strange tulip, a mixture of red and orange coating its leaves.

"Unique and vibrant, it is like you!" Vin said, sitting only once Dorian had accepted the gift.

When Vinnie sat across from Dorian, he put his basket at his feet and leaned back in the chair, smiling with the sincerity only the pure-hearted and children could muster.

"I am so happy that you asked me to tea, Dorian. I am sorry for my delay! I saw that flower and needed to get it for you." It had been right there, among dozens of reds, just a dash of orange. Vinnie almost hated picking it, knowing it would die, but that was the nature of life.

"Huh," Dorian said with small voice, suddenly caught off-guard. He held the tulip in his hand, stared at it... and felt his entire face burn in embarrassment. What the fuck. He gave Vinanye a look over and scrubbed his cheeks. This was an unfair political tactic. Dorian, almost shyly, put the tulip on his blazer's breast pocket. He went ahead and poured them both some tea.

"English breakfast and crumpets." He paused, and chuckled, "Not to be overly British or anything. I hope you don't mind. And, please, it's alright. I don't mind. I wasn't here that long."

He leaned back into his seat with a smile, trying to ignore how his stomach was suddenly a vibrating jet engine. "It's good to finally meet you, Vinanye. I've heard good things from Milo! You're running, right? What position? And why?"

"Oh, this is fine," Vinnie nodded. "I am more comfortable with Irish and British foods. They are closer to home."

And then Dorian asked Vinnie those questions. The prodding kind that people with an agenda asked. Vinnie only knew because he had watched his mother and her business as he grew up. The Fae couldn't help it, he gave a light hum of amusement but answered the questions with no hint of malice or patronization in his voice.

"Oh, I would say, auditor or secretary." The second question was a little tougher. Vinnie couldn't lie, not if he wanted to keep his powers, and culturally, it was more or less a no-no for the Fae. "Most people will tell you they are running because they wish to make the school a better place or because they have many grand ideas, yes? Well, I would like to help, that is true, but I do not have grand ideas. Simply put, I am running because I wish to see how this culture functions and there is no better what to do that than to throw myself into their competitions.

That is why I am running so that I might be in the midst of it all. See things from the inside. I have already watched them from the outside, and they made very little sense to me."

Vinnie tilted his head, smile faltering some. The look he gave Dorian was not unkind, nor had he lost any of his energy. Rather, Vinnie had shoved the excitement somewhere deep down so he could get a better feel for Dorian.

"What about you? You are going for the president position, correct? That is what most people are going for; I have come to realize. Why do you wish to be president, Dorian?"

Dorian nodded at the answer. Seemed like a reasonable one, if anything. Dorian couldn't begin to judge people that had other motives for running, really. He was iffy of his own things himself. Fae were an odd sort, weren't they?

"Ah, I see! I suppose the decision-making for politics, Students or otherwise, wouldn't make sense to an outsider. I think you'll learn a lot of things and do good. You seem like the personable sort, and from what Milo said, you're very helpful." Dorian smiled, then thrummed his hands on his thighs, thinking.

"Truthfully? President has the best vantage point for power. And I like being in positions of power. Being in control of the system means you get to change how things work, make it function the way you want it to. Maybe that sounds malicious. I dunno." This... wasn't the sort of thing that Dorian would admit often, but Vinanye felt comfortable, like he wouldn't judge him for this. "Lenin said the people below need to be led by a vanguard that represents their interests. I like to justify it that way. These people don't know how to help themselves. I do. I have experience, and I have their best interests in mind. Is that so wrong?"

Vinnie wasn't put off by that answer in the least. It was practical, and Vinanye was logical-minded at heart. The Fae sipped his tea as Dorian justified himself. He waited until he was sure Dorian was done speaking before he gave his input.

"That is smart, actually. Where I am from, is it that the strong only survive and the weak are killed, consumed, or both. This seems..." he needed the right word. Less. It seemed less malicious? "More practical than that.

"People like to be led, and you seem like a good leader. You are dominant, and dominant people like power, they need to feel useful, yes? Keep themselves busy. They are strong, and their job is to protect the weak."

Vin set his teacup down, measuring Dorian up for the first time since he'd come here. He gave one appreciative nod, and the smile he'd lost earlier was back in full force. "You will be good. Yes. You will not kill or harm the weak ones under you I do not think.

"Actually, I am glad that one of us is ambitious about getting to the top. For what I gather, student elections receive many participants who are not entirely interested in the position? I do not understand why that is, but I have noticed it."

Dorian mentally sighed in relief at Vinanye's approval. Oh, this man was going to give him a heart attack and soothe it all at once. That seemed to be his type. He nodded. "Yes! Of course. There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting power. It's abusing it that's the problem. You see, my dad was that sort of wicked man, the kind that used power to drain people out of their energy and resources. I don't want to be like that. I want to serve the people that choose to follow me and be a representative of their interests. I find that sort of work model has done wonders for me and the people that have worked for me."

It was easy to hurt those below it. He's done it in the past. He wondered if Vinnie knew, or if he was going off solely on his answers. He felt bare under his scrutiny, shy even, surprised that he'd look at the whole of him and find good. He wanted to reach for his hand and touch it. "Well... there's a lot of reasons why people would join student politics, and it isn't usually about the politics. Parental pressure, peer pressure, popularity contests, and all that stuff. There's power in the position. Sometimes people just like to relish in it instead of actually doing good."

Vinnie was used to people telling him more than they intended to. Dorian spoke about his father, his goals, everything with a calmness that had Vin smiling reassuringly. Whether Dorian's decision to work this way was based on genuine care for people or efficiency didn't really matter in the end. The result was the same.

"I suppose that makes sense," Vinanye said once he gave the Fae a short list of reasons people joined in on the elections. By the look on Vin's face, it was clear he was still struggling to get his head around them.

He smiled and shook his head, deciding it was best to take that information as it was and not try to comprehend it completely, yet. "That is admirable. Is it not smarter to make sure the people who work for you, or the people you work for, are strong? That way you can keep feeding off each other."

Yes, Vin thought in the logical stance. Kind as he was.

Dorian considered the question. "In an ideal world, I suppose that would be an option. But I can't always hire people even half as competent as I am. It's either you accept everybody and expand, or select a few and stay small. If you know good business, you'd know expansion is the ideal direction to go to. It yields you more money and benefits."

Dorian had finished his cup of tea and a crumpet, and smiled. "Have you ever joined any clubs yet, my dear?"

Vinnie didn't mind the change in topic. Vin didn't know much about business, especially not human businesses. Maybe one day he would learn. "I have joined the animal club that Milo runs, but not many more no. Are you going to suggest one of yours?"
