Valentine wasn't used to compliments so instead of making an actual response, he gave out a hum and just didn't try to make eye contact at their comment. Slight tinge of red appear at his cheeks but he hadn't made any move to hide them and pretended there was nothing. He hadn't had a proper compliment thrown his way in ages but hearing it out of people startled him more than often. Since moving to the island, not a lot of people have pointed them out until he brought it up himself -- that in itself wasn't often either. He'd called himself "snake boy" more than once and no one seemed to bat an eye.

When the question had been turned to the medic, it was the only time the young demon seemed to let himself stare back at them with curiosity. Valentine seemed to study his appearance, finding clues he might have missed at first but couldn't find at all. He'd done his research on mythical creatures and cryptids alike but not a single feature on the medic could give him an idea. He could be anything: possibly even something he had no knowledge of yet.

"Is there at least a general term?" he pressed, the curiosity plain in his reptilian eyes. "Or... what is it that you do?"

That was cute. At least now, Rin was getting some kind of reaction out of Valentine instead of a monotone voice and a blank expression. It was not much progress, but it was progress anyway. And Valentine was talking more, even about things that could be described as a little weird.

There was no good way to describe what the medic was. They leaned back as they tried to find the closest word they could to what they actually were. What was their father classified as, besides kind of an asshole? "Erm... Demigod? Amphibian?" They grumbled, sighing softly.

"Two very different categories... Have you ever heard of the story of Namazu? They are.. a giant catfish that is said to live under the Japanese islands, who causes Earthquakes." They told him, "...Namazu is technically my father. So I suppose you could say I am - part catfish?"

In all honesty, Rin had no idea how exactly they even came to be. They just kind of ignored those logistics, they didn't want to know.

The silence gave Valentine a little more time to observe, not the medic this time, but the room itself. It wasn't his first time in the manor but the house gave him a sense of nostalgia, probably from the size of it and the... general mood? It was so hard to point out, though perhaps it was the presence. His father gave a very strong presence in the house, though it was probably less than how he remembered.

Rin's voice pulled his attention back to them but the first words made his eyes narrow with confusion for a moment until they continued. The teen blinked a few before he fell into though. It was a familiar name, but he didn't really recall anything on it. "I might have heard of it, but I probably shrugged it off after," he replied honestly. He could have read something, but simply forgotten about it the day after -- it was a normal thing for most other things for most... odd things he encountered..Valentine turned around on his seat so he could face the other but his expression was kept neutral.

"I wish I could say that's really weird but I actually am part-snake," he mused aloud. Naturally, it would be so hypocritical of him to have said it. "Did you ever meet them in person?"

Rin laughed a bit, covering their mouth with their hand. Entirely fair.

"True. Thankfully I was lucky enough to not get any.. physical reprecussions from the combination. Though people like to tell me that my hair looks like mud." The medic hummed softly, pressing their lips to their hands. "You're welcome to call it whatever you'd like, really. It is really weird, I never asked about it - my mother never talked about it."

Rin rested their forehead on their interlaced hands, closing their eyes. Did they ever meet their dad? They never remembered any meeting with their father in all their years of life. They opened their eyes and leaned back again. "I never met them in person, or at all. They say he lives in the muds under the islands of Japan, guarded by someone who keeps them down with a rock so they don't cause constant earthquakes. So I imagine going in for a visit will be... difficult."

They paused, looking over to Valentine. "You do not have to answer, but do you recall any memories of your birth parents?"

Valentine frowned a little seeing them actually laughing -- or perhaps it would have been more accurate to say he was pouting. But. He did just say something weird too. He guessed he could forgive them for doing so. The frown lifted just as it appeared as he took a moment to stare more, trying to see the comparison with only his eyes. "I guess it does...? Most things look blurry to me but kinda does look like mud from here," he explained.

The more they talked, the less Valentine felt aware of the weather outside. It was warmer indoors for one, and it felt like a change of pace to be talking to someone. Valentine wanted to ask -- the more logical side of him wanting to figure out the logistics of a catfish literally kept down with a rock to actually ever have part human offspring. He wanted to, but the teen decided to hold his tongue on that part.

And yet, before he could come up with a coherent reply, it was the medic's turn to ask him a question. He didn't expect the question, but he was sure he should have. It wasn't really a sensitive topic for him yet it still somehow startled him. Valentine opened his mouth once but no sound came out. His second try was more successful.

"Of course, I do," he replied, folding his hands in front of him. His voice was quiet, almost like he was sharing a secret. "I remember them perfectly. Everyone seems to think I lost them before I even knew them, and that I made up stories but know I didn't." He hesitated for a moment, tugging at his sleeve for comfort before continuing. "I lost my mom when she was sick but dad should still be alive. He should still be out there but... I just don't know where."

Peoples history... it was a sensitive topic for most on the island. Over their years, Rin had heard a lot of stories about a lot of things that had happened. Some people were experiments, slaves - some were just called without knowledge of their heritage or abilities. Some people didn't share. But Rin could not help bu ask because they were curious more about the new soul.

Valentine was interesting and so Rin wanted to know just a little more. Maybe it would satisfy their curious mind. The medic nodded a bit as the story as told, humming as they tried to think of how to reply. This was always where they struggled - was actually replying to someone.

"I see." They sighed. "Thank you for sharing - you don't have to... Is there anything you would like or need?" The medic had always had a soft spot for kids... or rather, those who they thought as kids. They did not always get along very well with them at all, since they were still considered a little too rough around the edges. But they tried.

It had been a while since Valentine spoke of his parents -- not because it had been too sensitive about it, but he didn't like hearing the responses he got. He'd opened the topic back at the old orphanage but he was brushed off again and again. He reached a point of doubt and decided to never speak of it except in brief moments he felt like intimidating the other children and declared he was a demon's child. But even then it felt like a joke.

"It's fine. It's... not really a sore topic or anything. I like talking about them," he said. Moving to the island encouraged him to believe in those memories again, so every other opportunity he could get, he wanted to repeat it aloud, just so he could convince himself back into thinking they were real.

Valentine took a while longer to consider the next question, finding it a little harder to ponder for an answer, before he shook his head. "Mm, not really. I'm not really hungry or anything. The cold's just making me really sleepy."

There was a smile that curled its way onto Rin' lips as they listened to him talk. They were glad he at least liked the memories of his parents - sometimes people weren't fond of what they had.

"You're welcome to keep talking about them, if you'd like." Offered the catfish. If the memories made him happy, Rin did not want to be the one to keep that from him. "Or you can come sleep on one of the couches."

They would get him a blanket and keep one of the fires going. They would make sure he was safe and unbothered by other members - even if they had to work in there to make sure of it. They cared for the youth that entered the household, and now that they knew Valentine a little better - he was included.

Sleep sounded nice honestly, but he'd been fighting it the whole time. He didn't want to give in to sleep too early in the evening. Rin had offered his ear to listen to him talk about his parents though. He truly appreciated it that it put a little smile on his lips. There was a lot of things he missed about being home around his parents and it had been a while for someone willing to listen.

"I can stay awake a little more," he said, only to be followed with a tired yawn he had to smother into his arms. He stayed in that position a little longer like he was trying to get his bearings together before he raised his head again. "...Or not."

Valentine looked back up to the medic, "Is that okay though? I don't want to impose or anything." Despite saying that, he would have easily accepted the offer a second time; he was far too tired to think about waiting around, much less walking all the way back to the orphanage. And for once, Valentine would have been able to sleep more soundly after a long while in comfortable company.

They tried not to laugh when he stopped his own sentence with a yawn. They remembered doing the exact same thing - when they were a kid and even as an adult. It was adorable. They nodded to him with a small smile to the other.

"It's not imposing if I'm offering, Valentine. I'll get you a blanket and keep the fire going, go ahead and sleep." In the morning, they'd make sure it was safe for him to head home - even if they had to walk him there.

It was not like they had much to do outside of working for the gang anyway. They got paid reasonably well and they could spend the rest of the time as they pleased... Though that usually meant hanging around the mansion to make sure the gremlins children didn't get themselves in handcuffs or burn the place down.
