It was a fairly warm day for January; still, they were wearing a light coat over the rest of their usual clothes. Not that Yuuki was complaining about the weather, especially since they were going to spend the day outside, at least they hoped so. As opposed to their usual routine at the Manta Carlos Hospital, today they had been sent to help at the Yarrow Institute for Orphans and Lost Souls. The name alone brought memories of their time at the orphanage they had been raised in, spending the day in that environment promised to make the kirin nostalgic. Yuuki was a fairly shy person, so what they were going to do at the Institute should be hard for them. Luckily, when they put the whole doctor look on, it became a bit easier.

They had arrived at the Institute’s door a bit earlier than the set time. The garden at the entrance was enough to amaze them, everything looked so beautiful and they loved how some plants were also crawling up the walls, such a nice view. But they couldn’t stay there all day admiring the view, so they rang the bell at the door and waited, playing with the hem of their sweater.

A few minutes later, Yuuki was inside and sitting on a chair while one of the employees explained who they were going to take care of. They were told bits and pieces of this person’s situation and story, only what they needed to understand the patient. The doctor listened carefully, after the talk and hanging their coat and bag, they were left waiting in the hall for their patient to arrive.

He'd adjusted to his new home just as well as he'd hoped he would. The level of comfort afforded to the charges here seemed almost ridiculous. Almost all the rooms had double beds. His was warm and cosy – the staff had pushed the bed up against the radiator under the window so he had room to shimmy into his wheelchair. He'd taken to snuggling up against the gentle heat of the radiator at night, and peering out of the window in the morning.

It could get a little noisy, especially when the younger children had their lunch break and thundered through the hallways. But it was a wonderful kind of noise. Isaiah still expected to wake up and be back in the cold hospital room, plugged up, drugged up and only half conscious.

A carer knocked at around 9:30am, as was standard for new arrivals, or arrivals that needed the extra rest. She helped Isaiah dress – sweatpants, shirt and hoodie, and a fluffy set of slippers – came up with breakfast and chatted a good half hour away. Caught up in the conversation he barely noticed how odd the sound of his voice seemed to him.

She mentioned, lightly, that someone was coming around from outside the Institute to see him. They weren't a normal person like he had been seeing regularly, and it was okay to ask questions as long as they were not intrusive. Isaiah nodded as he was wheeled out of his room and down the hallway. He saw the visitor in question a few seconds after entering the downstairs lobby.

They looked almost too friendly to be real, even with the impressive horn. The nurse squeezed his shoulder and waved over to the kirin, dressed cosy in a sweater. Immediately he felt under dressed, but he only wore what the Institute had at their disposal. Most of their clothes were meant for lazing around in, with the odd shirt and pair of jeans from donations. He bolted upright in his seat and looked at the odd figure sat down in the lobby. “Hey,” he managed, stuttering a few times. “Isaiah.” Obviously communicating was not a strong point for him.

Yuuki stood up once they saw the blond from the corner of their eye. The people working at the Institute had already told them about his situation, but the foolish kirin still stared for a couple of seconds before greeting him.

They had seen a lot of supernatural people throughout their life, but people with cybernetics weren’t anywhere in their memories. Don’t be rude, that’s unprofessional, a little voice in their head said, The nurse probably noticed too you dummy. That small gesture would probably be in the back of their mind for a while.

Hello, Isaiah” they said with a cheery voice, trying to hide the shame for having stared at him, they even have him a small wave with their hand “I’m Yuuki” they continued with a smile on their face “And I will be spending the day with you today

They were almost completely sure that someone must have already told him about it, but they thought it was polite to say it anyway.

Metaphorical doctor mask on or not, trying to maintain some casual conversation to sort of break the ice wasn’t one of their strengths.

Would you like to go to the gardens?” Yuuki suggested, plants was something they could talk about for days, though they understood it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea “I know a lot about flowers, I could show you”

He saw them stare like everyone did and forgave them for it. Not right away. For the duration that they kept their eyes trained on him, examining and processing the sight of a cyborg sat leaden in a wheelchair, he thought of them with a vague contempt, unrelated to the fact he had also eyed them up in a similar fashion.

Behind the cheerful voice and sweet smile he could sense their regret. Having played into the liberty of staring for so long they understood that it felt horrible. It was that atmosphere that soothed most of Isaiah nerves, his fingers easing up from their grip around the wheelchairs arm rest. They were harmless, even lovely, in the sense a parent might be. Ones he realised in that moment he'd never see again. He'd been so overwhelmed by the new surroundings the people he'd left behind have been the after thoughts of afterthoughts, the second rain after a storm.

With the strength he had he could muster a smile. He committed the kirins name to memory. The nurse patted him on the shoulder and went to her other duties.

He'd not yet seen the gardens up close, his room had a view of the back expanse, but unless he leaned far out he couldn't see much of the shrubs and flowers. Going out the back hadn't occurred to him. “That would be nice,” Isaiah replied, in the stiff, awkward way he possessed. “There weren't many flowers back home.” As drab as it had been, how glorious virtual reality had made itself, he wished he'd not wasted so much time. He grabbed the wheels and rolled himself forward a little, mostly to prove to himself that he could.

Alright, alright, the garden idea seemed to please him, right? Or maybe not, Yuuki couldn’t really tell, they were still judging if they had messed up so soon or not. The kirin felt a bit relieved since he hadn’t remarked anything about their kind of awkward behavior.

Wha– really?” they said, legitimately surprised, after snapping out of their thoughts because of his last words. Having grown up surrounded by flowers, imagining the opposite looked terrible for them “Well, in that case I have much to teach you about

They had started walking next to him as soon as he leaded the way, not too close. Yuuki always walked in a way that looked a bit odd because of their hooves, tripping by accident would be awful for both of them, so they gave him more personal space.

It’s the first time I come to the Institute” they admitted “So I don’t really know what we’re going to find or what’s the way to the back garden”

That place was just huge, Yuuki didn’t want to risk ending up in the kitchen because they opened the wrong door or walked down the wrong corridors.

Though there should be some spider lilies, have you ever seen those?” then, they realized they didn’t even know what sort of plants grew where Isaiah came from, even If they weren’t many “Oh, which ones do you know about?
