How many nights will you be staying?” An elder man asked him and Joshua simply gave him the appropriate amount for one night. The man raised an eyebrow at him, but took the money and gave him a key.

He stepped back outside and went to his room. Joshua had decided against returning home or even his shop. He wanted to sleep somewhere unfamiliar and so he had rented a motel room.

The room looked clean... but Joshua could smell the countless people who had stayed here before. He closed the door behind him and tossed his coat and keys onto the single bed.

He then turned on the television and left to take a shower. His own home held no television, but he was not ignorant to technology he merely disliked it. But he wanted the background noise...

Joshua rid himself of all his clothes and stepped into the shower. The hot water cascaded down his body... and helped dull his overpowering scent.

He paused and looked to white bar of soap...but he wouldn’t allow himself to think of anything... He merely stared... and then proceeded to wash his body. Joshua exhaled slowly as the cheap fragrance stung his nose, but it would distract him from any unpleasant scents in his room.

When he was finished, he simply dressed and then watched the television. There were noises all around him from different rooms, but the voices were muffled...

Joshua didn’t care what he was watching... he just needed something to keep his mind preoccupied. The sun began to rise outside, but he never slept...

He remained awake... watching useless channels that meant nothing to him. But they kept him from sleeping... or losing himself to his thoughts...

Joshua could feel a light form of exhaustion washing over him, but he kept himself stationed on that bed... staring blankly at the television...

But his pupils dilated somewhat when he passed a channel that showed a White-tailed deer. He immediately changed the channel back and stared at the creature intently. The show went into full detail of the brown animal... and Joshua... found himself relaxing...

He turned the show up and rested comfortably against his bed... listening and learning about this creature. Joshua had never known that he had such a liking in this animal... but he instantly recognized the feeling and allowed it to consume him...

Joshua dreamed that he was in the forest... crouching down low to the earth and watching his prey. The light brown creature raised its head and glanced around sensing his presence.

He let out a low growl and dug his paws deeply into the earth as he launched forward to capture his prey. He landed atop the small creature and stared down at its frightful gaze.

But, he soon lowered and nuzzled against its cheek affectionately and then slowly down its neck. It made a soft noise in response to his attention... but didn’t try to run. Instead the small doe turned on its stomach and lied underneath him.

Joshua’s ears flickered and he slowly lowered down on top of it... shielding the small doe with his large soft wolf body.

The dream felt perfect as he gently cleaned his prize, but the doe’s mother returned... and she brought with her... his father...

An instant flare of aggression consumed him as he raised and snapped warningly at the two, but the large male deer returned with his own warning as he lowered his head and charged.

Joshua jerked awake and could still hear the distant sound of a wolf snarling. But the dream hard jarred him. He had felt peace within that dream... but in an instant it was torn from him...

He glared and ran his hand through his hair...

When had he fallen asleep? Joshua’s gaze moved towards the small digital clock and frowned as he saw the time. He hadn’t slept very long... but he needed to check out soon.

His emerald gaze moved to the television and could see a documentary on hyenas. They were fighting viciously and it only reminded him of his dream. He changed the channel and got up to take another shower.

Once he was finished he checked out of the motel room and went to the local bakery to buy himself breakfast. He didn’t eat inside the store however and instead found an empty bench away from everyone to eat alone.

When he was finished he tossed his garbage and returned to the empty bench. He honestly didn’t know what he was doing anymore. Joshua had no desire to return to his bookstore or go home...

So, instead he stayed here...keeping himself locked away and his emotions sealed.

Any essence of life he may have possessed before was gone now...

Within an instant Joshua had been given something so substantial... only to be shown that it was outside of his grasp and that was enough to jolt his entirety into oblivion.

Joshua remained there... void of any thought or feeling. He only moved when he became hungry and returned to the same bakery and then that same bench. It had warmed up since this morning and that seemed to cause more people to wander the marketplace.

He didn’t care though...

Not a single soul bothered him.

He pressed his elbow down onto the top of the bench and rested his chin against his hand... finally thinking about his dream.

He remembered the peace he felt... while that little deer was underneath him... and he wanted that feeling back. Joshua closed his eyes... and tried to envision that small doe...

Joshua frowned... but then smiled as he saw it staring back up at him with amber eyes. He felt his heart squeeze... and his eyes burn as the image of the deer suddenly changed and it was Bren laying underneath him reaching out and holding him.

He took in a sharp breath and opened his eyes...

Brendon had looked so beautiful...

His chest burned unpleasantly and he had to look away from the crowded streets. He felt exposed and actually got up to leave. He needed to go somewhere more private.

Joshua could feel his heart... aching unpleasantly... and the feeling wouldn’t cease. He didn’t understand why he was doing this to himself. The longing returned, and it brought more pain because what he wanted was impossible.

He couldn’t take Brendon forcefully and that left him with nothing.

Anger ignited within him and he hated that he cared. That he gave any form of care for ‘how’ he claimed Brendon.

Joshua tensed as he saw where he was unconsciously headed and it caused him to stop walking completely. He was going to his bookstore...because of Brendon’s scent...

He had been avoiding this place because of Brendon, and now that was the only reason he was being drawn to it. Joshua stepped forward and unlocked the doors... but hesitated in opening them.

Did he really want to continue this? If he stepped inside here... and smelled Brendon...he would undoubtedly want to see him again.

There wasn’t a choice... Joshua knew that these feelings would continue no matter what he did...

Joshua stepped into his store and locked the doors behind him. He closed his eyes... opened his mouth and took in a deep breath...

But he had come too late...

Brendon’s scent was no longer here...

His chest tightened once more and his eyes burned once more... but this time no one could see his pain...

Joshua took in another deep breath, and then exhaled heavily. He slowly moved forward within his shop until he reached the backroom. His emerald gaze immediately moved to the brown chair that Brendon had rested in.

He moved towards it and stared down at the seat...remembering his hand against Brendon’s chin... tilting him upwards. The boy had closed his eyes... waiting for him...

Slowly Joshua for the second time in months... removed his ring and allowed his true self to be revealed once more.

He tensed and braced the displeasure that came with removing his ring. But the moment everything eased away... Joshua slowly lowered towards the chair and opened his mouth to slowly breath in...

His mouth instantly watered... as he tasted him...

“Bren...” he whispered and took in more of his lingering essence.

His scent was so intoxicating for him...

Joshua sat within that brown chair... staring heatedly ahead. He felt so satisfied with such a small taste of that boy. It had brought him the same amount of pleasure as before... but he knew the process now.

This would only satisfy him for so long and then he wouldn’t be craving again. But he was thinking everything that had happened over... and advising a plan that would allow him to see Brendon again.

He wanted to earn his trust enough... for the boy to allow him to visit him even if that meant outside his bedroom. He already knew that his mother would never approve of their communication... and he didn’t want to waste his time with trying to convince her he was good company for her son.

Brendon’s mother was overprotective and overbearing...

Joshua’s lip curled slightly as he let out an aggressive sound. He strongly disliked that woman...

He took in a deep breath of Brendon’s scent and closed his eyes... concentrating.

She would without a doubt remain in his company while he visited and he would not get any time alone with Brendon to speak with him. So, he would have to deliver his message another way...

Joshua stood and gathered ink, paper and a quill to write his letter. He would ask Brendon to meet him outside his window, but if he refused to do so. Joshua wanted to give him an alternative way of contacting him... if he happened to change his mind... in wanting to speak with him.

He hated the thought of having to wait... but that was the price he had to pay to have Brendon willingly.

Joshua wanted Brendon to have the ability to contact him at any time and any place...but such thing wasn’t possible unless he acquired the appropriate device for it...

He would be purchasing a cell phone...

Reluctantly, Joshua put on his ring and left his bookstore. He moved quickly down the street until he entered a local mobile store and began browsing over their selections.

Joshua avoided the large bulky phones that were purely touch screens and tried to find something with keys.

“Can I help you, sir?”

Someone working within the store asked him and Joshua quickly and firmly told him that he was fine.

He had thought that he would just buy an old basic flip phone, but now... he wanted something a little more sophisticated... to impress Brendon...

Finally, a decision was made and he begrudgingly stepped before the cashier. They were overly friendly... but explained everything to him.

“A hundred and forty nine dollars... and I’m bound into a two year contract?” Joshua asked glaring at the man behind the desk.

“Y-Yeah, you know there are some really nice phones out there that require no payment,” he offered nervously and actually began to try and show him other devices.

“I’ll take it,” he told him irritably not wanting to waste anymore time. Once his new cell phone was paid for and a basic phone plan was set up. Joshua headed to the local grocery. It was here... that he purchased a ‘gift basket’.

Joshua could feel himself both impatient and eager...

He wanted to see Brendon now... but if this was going to work... he would have to get everything ready...

‘Dear Brendon,

Joshua began, but paused as he stared down at his name. His gaze lulled slightly as he thought about how they would be seeing each other soon. He had returned to his store and was situated within the brown chair with his ring off.

I am sorry if I upset you yesterday. That was never my intention. I’m writing you this letter in hopes that you’ll see me again. But, I’ll not force or threaten you in any way...

I will wait in the forest beyond your home and if you do not want my company then simply draw your curtains. I will not come to your window if they are closed.

He closed his eyes and carefully breathed in Brendon’s scent again. He was trying to be given what he desired...but it was difficult knowing that the boy could reject him completely...

Joshua wanted to give Brendon the freedom to choose however... and he so deeply... wanted Brendon to choose him.

But, know that you can contact me at any time... any day with this number.

I want to know more about you... to learn who you are and I want to share with you who I am...

His gaze moved to his ring... and he silently hoped that they were the same. He wanted to remove all of his jewelry and see his true self...

It would be... beautiful... and Joshua would give him his true self as well...

I have only known you for a day... but I want your company.

He wrote more... but could feel a powerful yearning within his heart now.

Please enjoy your book and perhaps you’ll read to me again...

Joshua smiled... and wondered if Brendon already knew that he had been listening to him read. But he grew more serious as he continued...

I would like to clear up a lie I’ve told you. I do not live anywhere near your home. I simply used that as a means to deliver this letter to you...and even if just briefly... see you again.

Before I end this letter... I would like to give you what I promised you at your window... my full name.

I am Joshua Christopher Ardel and I am most pleased to have met you.

Sincerely,

Joshua C. Ardel’

Joshua had wanted to give Brendon his name in person, but he felt as though he had tainted that opportunity. Brendon might not meet with him today... but at least... he would have his name...

Very carefully, Joshua sealed the letter with his own crest, placed on his ring and stepped out into his shop. He began browsing through the fantasy section until he found the book he had seen on the table.

Then his fingers drifted over until he pulled out the next volume. He stared down at the title “Fell” and silently hoped Brendon would like it...

He placed the letter carefully between the pages and closed the book. He then tied a sturdy string around each side and securely made a bow in the middle.

Joshua retrieved the ‘gift basket’ and finally began making his way to Brendon’s home...
