"Oh," was all Jasmine could say at first. She had expected everybody to know. Back home, something this big would have spread around like a cold in a kindergarten class.

"I think maybe you should. I, uh... I don't know if I'll be able to talk about it... but I guess he should know. So he knows what's going on, at least."

SERGEANT ANGELO GENOVESE

"I'll tell him then," Angelo said. "In private, next time we talk. Let him know what's going on with you so that when you run into each other, he knows what to expect."

He wasn't sure what else to say, and after a moment he released her completely, sitting up straight.

"Probably already overstayed my welcome," he noted with a sigh. "But if you want, I'll come back and visit while you're still here?"

He imagined she probably wasn't getting too many visitors, really. Might as well make himself useful.

Jasmine nodded and remembered a second later to also speak, giving Angelo a "Yeah, thanks. Have a good day," on his way out.

Once he was gone and she was alone again, she felt the heaviness that had enveloped her at seeing him start to lift. But it was replaced by something else... a different heaviness that she realized as she looked around the room was because she was alone again.

Hugging her knees to her chest, Jasmine started on one of the breathing exercises that her therapist had suggested. Grounding herself in the room she was physically in.

She hoped he came back soon.
