Whether 'tis nobler...

Kaize would laugh slightly at the girl's reply. It was so right, yet so wrong at the same time. "Kami are Japanese gods. There are more of them than I can count. Each town has it's own kami, then divided to each prefecture, and so on. Eventually you reach the old kami that everyone know, such as Raijin, Amaterasu, Susanoo, and Tsukiyomi. So in a way, they are spirits, yes."

"Fair enough, if you look at it that way, most of Shakespeare's works can be interpreted as warnings. Even his comedies. But, if you wanna talk magic, I suppose I can get that. I'd imagine going back to old school ways and teachings would be pretty boring in a place filled with magic and mystery. What did you have in mind?" Kaize would say. He wasn't terribly well versed in the ways of magic, but he knew a bit. There were some who dabbled in magic among the Court. He had tried his best to learn it from them, but he wasn't gifted in it. He had trouble controlling things the way it was necessary.

"I'm not the most informed or informative regarding magic, but I knew a few magic users. Fair warning." Kaize would say, holding his hands up.

Ellyn thought, looking around the library. He sounded well informed in all things with intelligent speech patterns that could put a person at unease.

Finally, she had a question. It had her snap to attention, and she hoped he might have an answer for her. She was starting to want to spend all her time with this man.

"What makes up magic? How dies it come into the world? Does everyone possess the ability to harness it, or is it purely genetic?"

Kaize was taken aback by the girl's question. If you underthought about it, the question made no sense. If you overthought it, it was one of the most brilliant questions ever asked. Kaize would take a few seconds to think, resting his chin in his hand, before sitting up and answering the girl.

"That...that's a mystery. No one can trace origins of something fantastic like magic. It'd be like trying to track down the origins of emotions. It's so abstract, yet common. Asking what makes up magic is almost akin to asking what makes up life? What constitutes it? What gives it substance and reason?" Kaize would stop himself dead in the middle of his rhetorical philosophical speech. That wasn't what she had meant at all. Getting back on track, Kaize would continue.

"Various things can constitute magic It can be raw elements, or powers that no man can truly comprehend. No one knows how it comes into the world, either. It's a mystery. I wouldn't say that anyone can utilize magic, but it doesn't take anything really special. It takes an apt mind and the willingness to take the time and learn. So either you're born with the ability to harness it through unexplainable means, be it a gift from a god, or simple genetics, or you train it if you can. Take me for example. I had plenty of time to learn, but all tutors I had said the same thing. I lack the mind for it. Learning magic means needing to learn to control it. I couldn't find it in myself to control it, and as such I couldn't utilize it properly. I could spray lightning from my hands, but it was uncontrollable, and sometimes refused to work at all. So I just stayed away from it."

Ellyn thought about this. She had read theories on the origin of magic. So many different places it could have come from. Was it here since the beginning of time? Ellyn couldn't think of a single person in her family who possessed abilities other than her. Where did her power come from then?

She needed to find some books and study up.

Ellyn found herself rubbing at her temples as she thought. Did magic have something to do with the constellations? She had heard tales of that.

"Is this what you do all day? Dedicate yourself to studying, reading, and learning?" The question was full of admiration, rather than frustration.

"For someone who doesn't know much about magic, you can still talk about it with such authority. That's amazing. I've never met someone so studious."

Kaize would snicker at the prospect of being able to dedicate himself to reading and furthering his knowledge. If only she knew. He had had quite the amount of time to learn about otherwordly things in a place where fun was a foreign idea. Doing anything other than practicing martial and mental skills, was a waste of time. Anyone caught actually goofing off was kicked out with a blank memory. Anyone caught wasting another's time was killed. Twenty years of that. And Kaize was considered to be among the best in the Court.

"Hardly. I dedicate myself to...other activities. I enjoy furthering my knowledge, but it only takes a small fraction of my time. I have heightened activity and potential in my brain, due to my senses. The heightened activity and potential allow me to learn and understand more, faster, as well as giving me memory much larger than normal. And i'm able to speak with authority because I was raised in a place where that was how you spoke. Even if you knew nothing about what you were talking about, you pretended you did, and you pretended well. The honor of the family hinged upon it. So, it just comes naturally to me." Kaize would finish with a smile.

Ellyn wanted to say something akin to 'Holy crap,' but around someone as well-spoken as Kaize, it just seemed all sorts of wrong, so she held it in.

"Strict home life, huh?" She asked.

Now Ellyn steered the conversation to something she knew well. "How much do you know about guns? Or archery?" Maybe somewhat immature of her, but she would have liked to talk about something she felt she could keep up on.

"My dad used to take me hunting as a kid all the time. I even did a few archery tournaments."

Kaize's face would slide to uncertainty at the mention of ranged and projectile weapons. He had little to no experience with them, due to his...well...abilities, and time with the court. No one there used ballistic weapons, because they were crafted by man, and inferior to magic.

"I...know of them. I'm terrible at using them, however. I can tell you how they work, down to the fine mechanisms, but I wouldn't be able to nick a target with one." Kaize would say. He was speaking the absolute truth. With his wave manifestations, he could hit just about anything he could sense, but that was because he knew how to manipulate them. He knew exactly how to use them, how to make them do what he wanted. Guns and bows were foreign in his hands. He couldn't make them move like he could make his waves move. And besides, pulling a trigger just felt wrong to him.

"What about a bō?" Ellyn asked next. "I've always wanted to learn how to use one of those."

Kaize's smile would return at the return to a subject he knew well and had experience with.

"Actually, yeah. I can use a bo staff pretty well. I can teach you if you'd like. Not here, of course, and not now. But at a later date." Kaize would say, thinking of his training. He hadn't been the best with a bo staff, but he was good with one.

Ellyn's face lit up at his promise to teach her. "That would be — Yes!" she quieted, trying to contain her excitement ass not to yell out in the library.

In a lower tone, she went on. "Yes, thank you. I've been wanting to train in one for like a year now, but I didn't know anyone who could use one."
