Whether 'tis nobler...

Kaize stood, gently guiding his left hand across the shelves of books. In his right hand was a thick but stout book, filled with the most famous and most obscure works by William Shakespeare. He was currently halfway through Hamlet. Analyzing Hamlet's soliloquy depicting his thoughts of death and suicide. It was a gorgeous speech to give to thin air. Despite being blind, Kaize loved to read. He despised braille, however. He preferred normal books. Not only did it give people pause to see a blindfolded man reading from a normal book, the feeling was much more rich. Reading through layers of ink on paper just felt better. Like he was getting more from the book. He relished in the difficulty. He'd take it over braille any day.

Walking back over to his table, or the table he had claimed for himself, he laid the book down next to 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' and smiled, murmuring to himself. "To be, or not to be. That, is the question."

"Woah, woah. Are you...blind?" A voice came from Kaize's shoulder.

Ellyn couldn't believe her eyes (pun intended). Was he reading? She leaned forward to see if it was braille. It was not.

She lay her hand on the back of his chair as she looked at the books on the table.

"Okay, I need to see this." She immediately took a seat across from him, wondering if he had some power that let him see.

This place was so awesome!

Kaize would smile and reply to the voice behind him. "Nah, I just like to put a 'hard' difficulty on my books. I'm the guy that plays games on the hardest difficulty for the sake of the game being hard." Kaize would say, chuckling. "Yes, I am, indeed, blind."

As the girl reached her head around to see Kaize's book, he would hold it to her, making it easier to see. The girl then went around the table Kaize had claimed as his own, and took a seat across from him. Kaize would chuckle again, and start his surprisingly short explanation.

"You may be wondering how in the world I can read normal books. Well, I have a sense that allows me to sense and see practically anything around me. It's so fine, I can pick out the layers of ink on the pages, thus allowing me to read normal books. I can tell when people are around me, like I could sense you coming up behind me. The only thing I have a hard time with is sheen, plastic surfaces. Like posters." Kaize would say, motioning around during his speech. He was incredibly fond of hand gestures. They, more often than not, helped him communicate and get his point across.

Then, just for the sake of messing with the girl, Kaize would reach into her head and speak there. "Now that you know of my powers, why don't you inform me? Anything special about you?"

At this point, Kaize might have noticed how difficult it was to reach her with his power. His words didn't seem to connect to her mind at all and as far as Ellyn was concerned, he had never asked what her abilities were.

Psychic shield power.

"Can you see what I look like?" Ellyn asked. She canted her head to the right. "Or would you need to feel my face for that?" She wasn't sure if that was an offensive question to ask a blind man. She assumed not.

Ellyn reached over and took Tess of the d'Urbervilles from the table to inspect it. She smiled a hint.

Kaize was slightly off put by the fact that he couldn't seem to reach this girl with his telepathy. There was something shielding her mind. Strange, but probably something he'd face more often than not here. She seemed to have no idea he tried to reach her, though. So perhaps that was her power...

The girl asked him if he could tell what she looked like. Kaize would smile and hold his hand to his chin in mock thought. His face would contort in false contemplation, and after holding the pose for a few seconds, he'd reply.

"Well, let's see... You've got firm, almost robust shoulders and a proud stance. A slim body that's toned and somewhat built, in terms of muscle mass. Your hair frames itself around your face perfectly, very curly by the way. You have sharp features and a facial structure that follows. Overall, a very pretty build, but one that makes it evident you're very capable and proud. But hey, what do I know, i'm blind." Kaize would say, before smiling and blowing imaginary dust from his knuckles. Perhaps he had been blunt, and maybe a little judgmental, but he had meant everything in a positive light. And he was 99.9% sure he had conveyed that in his tone...hopefully.

"Still...that was easy as pie. Gimme a challenge." Kaize would say, faking a yawn and stretching his hands behind his head.

Ellyn ran a hand over her jaw as she thought. She looked around. She noted that he hadn't mentioned color. Could he not see color then? That might be a good challenge.

"What color is the carpet?' She asked. "How many people, including me and you, are in this library?"

Ellyn had counted four in plain sight, but she wasn't sure if there was more hidden behind the shelves.

She held up three fingers, two on one hand and one on the other. "How many fingers am I holding up and which are they?" Right index and thumb, left pinky.

Kaize would smirk at the girl's eager challenges. She did seem earnest to understand just what he could 'see' and what he couldn't.

"Well, I can't exactly see color. I'm like a bat, I see via hyper advanced echolocation, like a bat, or a ship's radar. But, seeing as it's a library, the coloring is probably pretty bland. Including us, there are twelve people in the library. Four in relatively plain sight around us, two in the non-fiction section P to Z, and four in the biographies." Kaize would say, pointing to the various locations as he said them. Next, the girl held up her fingers and asked what fingers they were, and how many.

"Two fingers, one right and one left. Right index finger and left pinky finger. Thumbs aren't fingers." Kaize would say, smirking. He could be a real smartass, but it was enjoyable.

"Well, hopefully that was test enough, but if there's anything else you'd like to know if I can 'see' then ask away. Now, though, i'd like to turn the questioning to you. You know about my power, why don't you tell me a little about yourself and yours?"

Ellyn laughed when he told her thumbs weren't fingers. She would give him that one, it was a good answer.

"True enough," she smiled.

Her smile turned nervous when asked about her abilities. Ellyn didn't dislike her power, but it wasn't up to snuff with most of the stuff here.

Reaching for comfort, Ellyn hugged the book she had inspected earlier to her chest.

"I guess I'm just stubborn," she said flippantly. "I have a mental barrier. That's all I have. Otherwise, I'm totally normal. It's not as interesting as echolocation, but it's practical and has helped me out of a few pickles. I didn't even known I had it until thirteen when I got a letter from this place."

The girl seemed generally happy, until her powers were brought up. Her face took on a nervous look and she clutched Tess of the d'Urbervilles to her chest. Kaize felt almost immediate regret, and opened his mouth to retract the question, when the girl started talking.

So that was why he wasn't able to reach her. She had a barrier around her mind. She seemed almost self conscious about it, though. Like she didn't like the power or something. "Well that explains a lot. I'm a telepath, and I couldn't reach your mind to talk to you there. That's...an amazing power. You're right, it's not sensory, but it protects you from things that could and would break other people. It's an amazing gift, really. Something to be cherished." Kaize would say, smiling at the girl. Well, now would be as good a time as any to change the subject.

"Well, i'm going to guess you didn't just come here to steal Tess of the d'Urbervilles from a blind guy. Want to inform me why you're here?"

"Oh," Ellyn laughed breathlessly, quickly setting the book on the table.

She would have been embarrassed to admit she had been somewhat caught up in his praise of her ability.

"I came in search of demonology books, and maybe something on alchemy. Then I saw you reading and got interested. It's just not something you see every day," Ellyn grinned, "a blind man reading. It shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did, seeing as where we are."
