Where My Demons Hide

Eli walked back to his apartment as he looked towards the ground. He got inside without too much trouble and was planning to write today. Apparently he wrote better when he was being moody, what a revolutionary surprise. Sarcasm aside, he couldn't feel good right now. On top of generally feeling terrible, he knew he had upset Tomomi and the others... a lot. He sighed as he stepped inside.

The discovery that he was a demon... hurt. He had spent the better part of a couple of centuries convincing himself that he was not a demon. Because everyone was convinced that was what he was. He hadn't slept since he discovered what he was, and hadn't eaten since Friday. But, he actually went and changed that as he grabbed a snack from his fridge, then got a glass of water.

He sat on his couch as he ate his snack and drank his water. If someone else went couple of days without eating and rarely drinking, they wouldn't be doing that well by this point. But Eli didn't need to eat or drink that much, so this little snack and water was enough to keep him alive for several more days.

He also did not need to sleep as often, but he was starting to get to a dangerous point. He knew that. But, it wasn't exactly he hadn't tried to sleep. He had, quite a lot. But considering he already had major issues sleeping, it was going to be impossible with how overactive his mind still is. How could he be a half-demon? A lust demon, no less. He knew he was his mother's son, he'd been told about the day he was born plenty of times that he no longer found it embarrassing. But his father...? He had taken his looks more from his mother than his father. Now that he thought about it, he didn't look anything like his father. He had always looked like his mother.

But, his younger sister looked like both of his parents. It was obvious. She was pretty with blonde hair like his mother, but had deep brown eyes like his father. She was small and delicate, but carried herself like his father. She really was a mix of both of his parents, but everyone always commented how much more like his mother Eli looked. He shook his head as he finished drinking his water. No, that couldn't be... could it?

Eli Smith had not shown up on anyone's patrols. He'd been a point of concern for a while, but wherever he'd gone, he was laying low. But not being easily found wasn't the end of it, and near the end of his shift Angelo had been sent to check his apartment, double checking to make sure he hadn't wound his way home. Someone had already been there to check, but that had been hours before when it had first been an issue, and there'd been no sign he'd come back.

Angelo was in uniform when he headed up to the door, knocking once and expecting, truthfully, nothing at all. There was no reason that Eli would have returned home, and from what (relatively little) Angelo had heard he was more likely to be crashing in a bar somewhere.

Eli blinked when he heard a knock at the door. Honestly he was genuinely surprised. He hadn’t received many visitors since he arrived to the island, and was often out so those who did know him often found his apartment empty. But to have a knock at the door now?

He didn’t see a reason to ignore it. Even with the events earlier, he would be willing to accept some aggravated screams from the people who were there at the time. He would just feel guilty. He wouldn’t... attempt anything but he just couldn’t feel any good.

He stood up and walked to the door, slowly with the hope that whoever knocked would’ve left. He opened it, again slowly, and as quiet as he could. Yes, he was accepting of any punishment but if he could avoid it, he was going to give it a good go.

Angelo was very close to leaving when the door suddenly opened, revealing a very... not put together Eli. He looked a bit like he'd been run over by a car, only less physically screwed up. Okay, maybe not less, but at least no bruises.

"Mister Smith?" Angelo said, raising an eyebrow. "Can I talk to you for a moment?"

He was hoping the answer was a yes. Health and safety checks were pretty much always a mess.

Eli blinked when he realised his attempt at pretending he wasn't there while also clinging to being polite didn't exactly work. He was seriously tempted to try and creep back inside but he just sighed as he opened the door more.

Eli hadn't really considered what he looked like up to this point, but with how he was at the moment, he himself wouldn't really be surprised if he looked like a major trainwreck. But he tried to stand as straight as he could, straightened his clothes a little and attempted to look like he wasn't about to sleep where he stood.

Now was the hard part. He still wasn't great at socialising, and he hadn't really talked to officials of any kind much. Well, the most notable times he did, it didn't end well for him. He finally nodded and cleared his throat. "Yes, of course." He spoke with as levelled a voice he could muster, but it wouldn't be hard to pick out the hints of worry he had.

He definitely looked like a train wreck, and Angelo was definitely aware of that fact, his eyes sweeping quickly up and down Eli as he stepped inside. He felt formal, but he also felt unprepared. They got training for cases where someone was having a breakdown, but they still weren't experts. They still weren't really prepared for it. No one really was.

"I spoke with some of your friends over at the community center," Angelo said, making an effort to keep his voice even. "They expressed some concerns about you. They said you hadn't been eating or sleeping, and might need help."

Which was a very polite way of saying he was there because other people were worried, and a part of his job was to check in and make sure he wasn't going to drop dead on this watch or anything.

Eli stood to the side as Angelo came in before he shut the door behind them. He turned back to Angelo, his fingers tapped against his leg. He felt that twinge of guilt again when Angelo mentioned the community center. He shouldn't have gone, not in this state. He rapidly forgot that just talking about the last time he ate and slept would've worried them. He remembered Tomomi leaving, and he wanted to sigh.

On the outside, he looked worried but when he felt that guilt, his face did show it for a few moments. He slowly nodded in understanding. "Yes, I was there earlier today." He realised how tired he sounded now. He didn't want to lie, it was never in his nature to lie. "Yes... I haven't been eating or sleeping." He sounded very guilty now, almost like a child who admitted a wrongdoing to a parent.

He continued tapping fingers against his leg. "I must say that I do not require as much food or sleep as a regular human though. The intervals I do require them are also longer." In a way, he sounded like he was trying to come up with an excuse. In a way, he was trying to make an excuse for himself. He knew he shouldn't do this, but he couldn't help it. He just hoped that Angelo would buy it, so Eli would stop causing problems. All Eli had done is cause problems, over and over again. He wanted that to stop oh so bad.

He didn't look good, but he also didn't look like a man who'd gone as long without eating and sleeping as he supposedly had. That tended to be a bit more... obvious. That long without sleeping made people hallucinate, so Angelo raised an eyebrow when he confessed that he hadn't been eating or sleeping.

Oh. Powers. That made sense.

"If you have something going on," Angelo said, "there's resources for it on the island, regardless of your problem. You've got people concerned for you, and while I don't think you need intervention if you've got powers that mitigate it, you do look like you probably need some help."

Eli almost sighed again. Going to the community center was a mistake. “I appreciate the concern, but I’m just going through a rough patch.” He actually sounded pretty convincing as he spoke. But that was because a small part of him desperately wanted to believe the words he spoke.

He didn’t want to cause any more problems for anyone. He already felt awful that someone had to come out to check up on him. He knew he wasn’t that okay, the fact he ate and slept less proved that. But it wasn’t okay, he would deal with it himself. Wherever that brought him.

He tried to look neutral and casual as he looked at Angelo. “I apologise if I’ve wasted your time.” He found himself wishing to say sorry a lot recently. He’d kept on tapping his fingers against his leg, his most used obvious tell that he still wasn’t calm.

"Going through a rough patch is pretty common, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't take advantage of the resources you've got on hand," Angelo said pointedly. "It's pretty common for people to push away help because their issue isn't important enough, when really that's what the resources are for in the first place."

Really, it would save him a lot of time and work if people just used those resources the moment they had an issue, rather than bottling it up.

"It wasn't an issue," Angelo said, waving off his apology. "But if you're alright, I'll head out. Just try and keep what I said in mind, alright?"

Realistically speaking, he was a cop--and Angelo was used to people being awkward or nervous around cops.
