"Mhm," Rory said. "Then maybe no one should have come through the portal. We all should have stayed back and fought the good fight. That was our lot, right? That's what we signed up for? But we didn't get that choice. Now, a whole new dimension might be destroyed because of us. And sure, arguably the Gultha would have moved on to kill another planet again, but that wouldn't have been on us or We The People. But this one is."

Maybe they should have all lived or died with the people who loved them. It was a grim thought, but it was one he was sure they'd have been angry with. They hadn't done everything they'd done to let everyone die. They wanted someone to survive. They'd wanted some last reminder that their world had lived, even if they died.

Jude reached up, wiping at his eyes.

"I don't even know if they're wrong. I didn't want to say it back there, but they're not even destroying. They're reclaiming. They're like... intergalactic garbage disposal gone wrong. They build up, and then when the civilization is so decadent that it'll no longer grow, they eat it back up and move on. Only someone messed it up."

"Yeah, the Ijian messed it up. They created an antibody and ran." Rory stepped over to Jude, snagging a napkin and dabbing away any tears from his face, careful as always.

"And they're not... wrong or right. Sometimes things just are. We don't say a volcano is wrong, but we also don't wait around to be burned down by the lava, you know? Something talking doesn't change those facts."

She smiled at him. "You shouldn't be thinking about this before going to work."

Jude huffed as she wiped at her face, shooing her off as he turned away, cleaning himself up. At least he didn't have to worry about smudging his makeup like she probably did.

"I'm fine," he said. "Really. I think about this stuff anyway." Really, it was her that was screwing him up. Seeing her upset. Seeing any of his friends upset.

He didn't like that.

"I should get going. Get there early." He hadn't even eaten his waffles, but maybe it would be better to pick up food on his way there. "Are you doing anything else today?"

"Probably not, but the night is young, as they say." Rory grabbed his waffles and thrust them at him. He was trying to get away. That was fine. This... was not a good conversation before school or work.

"Hey! Knock 'em dead. But not really. We're heroes, we don't do that."

Jude took the waffles--he'd just eat them plain as a to-go food. Not exactly healthy, but he'd had far worse while running out the door for heroics, and he nodded to Rory, giving her his very best look, everything is normal! smile.

"I'll see you after work, alright?"
