Calan stared blankly at the page of one of his books as he sat on his bed. For the past hour, he had been 'reading'... Well, if looking at the same sentence for an hour while zoning out counted as reading, then sure, he'd been doing a hell of a lot of it, that day. It was a shame, too... It was such a good book, but he just couldn't focus on it... With a moaning echo, the floorboards of the old house creaked, and a shadow stepped into the hall. Ahh, finally, the first sentence of the chapter registered in his mind, and so his cerulean eyes wandered lazily to the next sentence. Time for another hour spent 'reading'...

Honestly, this reading thing was about the last thing on his mind. Though his face didn't show an ounce of his inner turmoil, Calan was pretty nervous. He was supposed to be getting a roommate today, and well... His last attempt at rooming with someone didn't exactly work out very well. To be honest, that entire day was a pretty huge wreck - yeah, maybe it wasn't good to think about that at the moment.

The vampire wanted to smack himself, really, but it would be awkward to explain the red marks that would stick to his face, considering how hard he wanted to do it. It wasn't like him to be so self-conscious, but yet... He was self-conscious. What if his roommate was a massive jerk, as in a bigger one than Calan himself? What if he was taller than him? What if his roommate was a massive, tall, muscular gay man with huge seme tendencies and a lust for fangs and tails and red hair and- 'OHMYGODWHATISEVEN...' Alright, so that last one was pretty farfetched, but... Damn. Anything could happen!

For once, Calan hoped to god that he and his roommate would collaborate well... If he was going to be stuck sharing a room with some guy for the next... however long until one of them graduated, he kind of wanted to be on good terms. I mean, for his own advantages in the situation. Definitely just for his own advantages. It wasn't like he wanted a friend or something. How absurd!

The teen fiddled with the red and black smokey guitar chip on a chain around his neck, before he made a decision on what to do. Calan sighed, realizing that reading was absolutely hopeless and the moment, and set his book down on the bed. Silently, he reached over and picked his guitar from the wall, a pleasant red-on-black starburst colored acoustic-electric, and set it in his black-clothed lap, his legs tucked in a crossed position. As he sat back against the few pillows that were placed on his bed, he began to strum an idle tune. His naturally-messed hair fell over his eyes, and his maroon dress shirt ruffled as his hands moved his hands.

At first, the melody was from his mind alone, but it quickly morphed into "Welcome To My Life" by Simple Plan. He wasn't sure why, though he didn't dwell too much. Maybe it was just the name of the song and the situation he would soon be facing, in which they'd both literally have to welcome someone into their lives. Maybe it was subconscious troubles making their way to the surface through his music, as they often did. Calan didn't know, and he didn't bother too really look into it either.

Instead of that, he simply let the music consume him, his troubles and the otherwise silent dorm room, the soft melody of his unplugged guitar pleasant. Before he knew what he was doing, he was singing very quietly to the words of the song, letting his mind go blank as his worries evaporated into the strings of his guitar. This... This was one reason he loved music so much. It made everything okay, and it gave him the peace he otherwise lacked.

When would his roommate arrive?

Dorms were not something Rhett was used to and especially not dorm rooms… or any kind of room you had to share with another person. It was a nerve wracking thought that was only made even more so by the knowledge that he indeed had a roommate and not just it being a possibility. A roommate; a complete and utter stranger of whom he has no idea about other than the fact that he would be living with them for his duration at the academy. Being a more solitary individual, that idea was immediately off putting and caused his ears to droop and his tail to lag limply behind him as he walked. Oh! Why couldn’t they have found him a dorm without a roommate?! It was bad enough he was suddenly being shipped off to a completely foreign island after having a horrible argument with his parents….and now not having an association with them but now he was being forced to give up his privacy and share a room with someone?!

The world hated him. He came to that conclusion as he shrugged his lone duffle bag further onto his shoulder to keep it from falling off. There wasn’t much in it save for mostly clothing, his body jewelry and some money as that was all he was allowed to bring when he was kicked out and his parents decided they no longer wanted anything to do with him. They didn’t want anything to do with his style of choice or body modifications either so he was lucky enough to have that and some cash he had stolen from them. He would have to start over from scratch and build up life all over again…but this time it would be his life and not theirs or the one they wanted him to live. He is Rhett Wolfe and he is gay and he stutters and there was nothing they could do about it. He decided as he came up on the door with the number tagged on the front that he had been given on a small slip of paper.

He glanced from the paper to the door a few times just to be sure and raised a hand to grab for the door knob but faltered. Ok Rhett, it’s just a room…with a stranger inside….that you’ll be living with from now on. Well that didn’t help at all and he found himself pausing for longer before the door than he had anticipated. Hold on….maybe his roommate wasn’t there after all…maybe they left for a while and he could unpack and settle himself in with the room to himself….then make a break for it before his roommate came back. Yeah…that’s an encouraging thought.
Wait a second…is that singing?

He shoulders dropped at the realization that there was indeed someone inside and there was no way of getting around this. Or was there? Maybe he could just…not go in and….and what, Rhett? Wait around the halls like an idiot for him to leave? Yeah great idea….just open the damn door and get this over with!

He once again moved for the door knob but didn’t quite make it there before faltering again. Is it….Simple Plan? No way….and their voice sounded kind of nice too… That made him wonder if he was cute and that thought made him wonder if he was a cute straight guy…that would be just his luck! Part of him wouldn’t mind having a cute boy for a roommate but part of him was made nervous at even the thought of it. Having a cute guy around all the time invading his privacy… His cheeks began to heat up at that thought which he promptly shook away to set his attention back on the door.

Ok..I can do this…I can do this… He mentally prepared himself before reaching out to grab the door knob for the third time. Though just before his fingers could reach the knob, he quickly curled them into a fist and chose to knock instead. That was more polite after all, right? Who knows…he could be nude or something and that would be embarrassing to walk into! Ok…let’s not think about…oh man….please be ugly, please be ugly, please be ugly!

Calan had just begun the second chorus verse to the song when a knock echoed through the room. His half-lidded eyes shot open, and he stopped both playing and singing, immediately more nervous than he would ever admit. 'Ohgodhe'shereithastobehimIgetnovisitorsohnoohnoohnoahhhhhh... he thought, frantic thought echoing off his skull and through his brain. He carefully slid his bab- his guitar onto the bedspread, careful to keep it with the strings facing the ceiling, before sliding off the bed.

Calan walked slowly to the door, running through mental checklists and many racing thoughts. Images of 7ft tall professional bodybuilding gangsters with shark teeth ran through his mind, along with some other rather disturbing images, and he prayed to whatever higher being existed that his roommate wouldn't murder him with a single glare from the eyes that he just knew would be set in a permanent glare but only at him cause this guy was obviously about to hate him for existing (just like everyone else) and oh god oh god oh god WHAT IF ALL THIS WAS TRUE AND HIS ROOMMATE WAS FEMALE.

Still, despite his ever growing doubt, he knew that there was a chance that his roommate would be absolutely amazingly cute and he would need to look nice, so he repeatedly fixed his hair. It didn't do him much justice, though, as the scarlet locks still tumbled over his cerulean eyes. So many times in the span of twenty or so seconds did he fiddle with his rolled-up-to-the-elbow sleeves, mess with the unbuttoned button of his maroon dress shirt, or adjust his black skinny jeans (screw the critics, he could effin rock skinny jeans). His tail was wrapped around his waist, hidden under his looser shirt - there was no possible way he would show his anxiety - and all his piercings were in at the moment, Oh for the love of appearances...!

Eventually, meaning within somewhere under a minute, Calan did reach the door. He did his best to school away any and all terror at what he expected his roommate to somehow be like, because he knew it was so absolutely irrational except it wasn't and nope nope nope, just smile! So, he did smile, one that looked small and natural but was secretly very strained deep down. Then, with a hand he made to stop quivering, he opened the door.

Well then. That was a pleasant surprise.

Before him was not some monster muscle lady with a band of vampire destroying werewolves as her hunting dogs, but a small boy - small compared to Calan's 6'1" somewhat muscled frame, anyway - with.... 'Holy shit, those are cat ears. Ohmygodsokawaii...!' From just this first quick sighting, he could tell that the boy before him was attractive, but that he was also shy from his expression and body language - well, drooping cat ears and tail weren't exactly a sign of happiness, eh? Cute, smaller than him, shy probably and not glaring at him. Well...

Yay.

This scanning would not have been apparent, as the second Calan's silvery blue eyes landed on the sight of his roommate, his secretly strained smile relaxed into a real one. He held the door open wide enough and was far enough back that he didn't seem to be blocking the door purposefully, either. Calan brought his free hand up to scratch the back of his neck nervously, his smile faltering with bits of nervousness he couldn't mask. "You, ah, didn't hear any of that... did you?" he asked, his voice laced with that amused tone that always came with lighthearted unease.

"Wait, ah, that's not what I meant to say...!" he managed out, eyes widening as his hand froze and dropped to his side. A nervous chuckle escaped his lips, and he added, "I meant, uh... You're my new roommate, right? I'm Calan..." Geez, he wasn't ever nervous! Why was he ver- well. He'd already gone over that, no sense in doing so again. It was then that he realized he had forgotten something kind of important, seconds after finishing his last line... With a small jolt, he opened the door wider and moved a bit out of the way to let the neko in. "Right, uh, come in! Your bed is to the left..."

For a while there, Rhett wondered if he knocked loud enough and if he should knock again or perhaps go with the idea he had earlier of leaving and waiting around until his roommate left. However the sound of movement from within the room forced him to stay where he stood and stick this out. He practically held his breath from the time that he heard the scuffling in the room until when the door was finally open. When it was however, all of his earlier inner ranting and wishful thinking of the guy in the room being unattractive was let down the instant he laid his eyes on him.

He figured he was a guy by the sound of his voice, from what he could hear through the door which only lead to him hoping he wasn’t attractive to ease his nerves a bit. Having a male roommate was one thing when you were attracted to males but having a male roommate that you were attracted to was a completely different story that came with a completely new set of worries. First of all, the idea of living with someone attractive who would be invading his privacy a lot more than what he was used to simply by sharing a room but there was a good chance they would be around each other a lot which would mean either a lot of awkward silence or being pressured to speak or communicate in some other way that would make him look stupid. All of these thoughts and more were swarming his mind as he stood there dumbly, practically staring up at the taller boy like a deer in headlights.

He gave a small and awkward smile in response to his roommates own before he averted his eyes when he realized he had indeed been staring. Then, the boy started speaking and Rhett only became more uneasy as when people started talking, they expected vocal responses in return and he was much too nervous to even think about trying to talk. When asked if he heard him singing, he gave a simple shake of his head, lying that he hadn’t incase the other didn’t want him to. He didn’t want to get on the guy’s bad side before he even got into the door after all. He was sure if he did, the guy could easily beat the crap out of him as Rhett is quite a bit smaller than him.

That however, only brought up more worried thoughts such as what this guy was exactly, considering there are many inhuman beings running about and at this school especially as he has been informed. Also, the question of if this guy was, well for lack of better words, homophobic as his parents and many people were that had run into in his life. That last question was far more concerning however than the first considering the answer to the second could mean he would have to be very cautious not to slip up at all and could mean trouble if he did.

He tried to shake these thoughts away however, and put his focus and simply working through the introduction as that was what the guy was doing now. Calan…that was an interesting name, he’s never heard it before but it was kind of fitting…not that he would be able to compliment on it even if he might have wanted to. He’d both probably screw it up by not getting his words out correctly and give the guy a reason to make fun of him or do the same by complimenting him as it may very well seem too weird for a guy to do…or so he thought it might be taken.

He kept his mouth shut however, shifting a bit uncomfortable and giving a nod at the question if he was his new roommate. Geez! He felt like such a looser and completely out of place…why couldn’t this guy have been be ugly, or a girl? Rhett’s ears perked up a bit, and without Rhett’s voluntary control when the door was suddenly opened further, much like a cat’s might at a sudden sound or movement. He hesitated at first though, before entering the room and when he did, he didn’t give his new roommate another glance before heading straight over to the bed mentioned. He wasn’t sure what else to so he awkwardly set his bag down on the bed and took a set without having uttered a single word.

Oh, geez. Calan couldn't stop the slight blush that rose to his cheeks when the Neko was staring at him, but it was only slight and maybe if he didn't make a big deal of it, it would go away and... and when the hell did he start blushing anyway...?! This was not like him, maybe it was cause he wasn't wearing his 'mask' at the moment, but ahhh.... He just decided to think of his old classmates, and quickly enough, the blood left his fair face. He had to admit though, that quirky smile was kind of cu- no thinking things about your roommate or it can and will get awkward.

He wasn't sure whether he was happy or disappointed that his roommate didn't hear him... Though, it's not like it could be helped. Besides, Rhett would hear eventually, especially if they were going to be rooming together until one or both left the Academy..,

Calan couldn't keep a small pout-like frown off his lips as his new roommate didn't even speak to him once, just nodding, smiling, and... silently coming inside and sitting. He felt a little anger, busy mostly disappointment, and it was semi-visible on his face. However... these emotions weren't directed at Everett at all, but at himself. Did he do something and mess up already? Or... Was he right? Was his roommate someone who just knew to automatically hate him? Was... Was Rhett like Hitori/Ji Hye...?

Calan scuffed his hightops against the floor as he shut the door and came into the room again. Arriving much faster across than last time, though he wasn't necessarily moving fast, he moved his guitar off his bed and leaned it against the wall at the foot of his bed. Then he moved around to the side, more-or-less in front of Rhett, and sort of just... Fell back. His head was a hair's breath from hitting the wall, and his legs were hanging over the edge (feet flat on the floor) but he was still comfortable... Well, as comfortable as he could be at the moment. Calan's shirt had ruffled a few inches up his abdomen when he fell back, so he awkwardly pulled it down, staring at the ceiling. "I- Mhn..." he began, but just decided to trail off there, not even knowing what he was going to say. I... am sorry if I just royally screwed this up somehow? 'Nope.' I... have a cat, wanna pet it? 'That just sounds wrong.' I... like your ears? 'And suppose he's not gay, not even bi, Calan? That would just make things awkward.

Instead of saying any of the previous, inappropriate options, Calan just sat up on the bed and looked at the Neko. His hair, from that, had decide to just forgo all the nervous fixing it had gone through and had reverted to his normal kept yet messy style. Quickly, his frown slid away at seeing just how nervous the boy seemed. Maybe he hadn't done anything... Maybe his roommate was just a little freaked out. So, instead of a frown, Calan put on a comforting smile. "Hey, don't be so nervous; I won't bite you or anything," he said gently, with an amused chuckle at the end. Oh, the irony of that statement. A vampire saying he didn't bite... Well, he supposed he really didn't, at least not anymore. Instead of drinking blood, he just... drew... blood...

Calan fidgeted with the bandages around his left wrist, a motion that seemed purely from nerves unless someone else knew better. Honestly, his bandages could totally have been part of some weird fashion trend, as they went from half way up his fingers to his elbows, and that was exactly what he was going for. A fashion trend. Yep, it was just a fashion trend. No need to ask! No need at all.

After a second spent fidgeting, thinking of what he could say and averting his eyes, he finally found something. "What's your name?" he asked, looking back at the face of his roommate. Honestly, he really wanted things to be comfortable... Calan wasn't very good with awkward situations, yet he seemed to always find himself caught in them. So, he figured asking a fairly average question could... lighten the mood... Why was everything so damn complicated?!

Suddenly, a meow much larger than thought possible sliced through the tense air like a butter knife slices through........ butter. Not the best analogy, but anyway! The meow seemed to carry an echo of "OHMYFISHAHUMANCATILIKEHIM."

A small, 7 week ball of black fuzz and blue eyes shot our from under Calan's bed, moving in a blur, and tackled Rhett's lap. Immediately, the little fur ball began chirping, purring, and rubbing her face and forehead all over the neko's lap and abdomen. With every mewl and purr, she seemed to be saying something like, "Mine, mine, and this is mine, mine too, Oh Daddy can I keep him oh and that's mine too mmmmm..." to those go could possibly understand her. The little kitten, who strangely smelled faintly of skittles, obviously liked her owner's new roommate.

Calan blinked rapidly three times, staring at his kitten. "Skittles," he offered as a means of explanation. "I looked for her everywhere earlier..." It was safe to say that, maybe the tense air had been broken a bit... but Calan was in a mini state of shock at what had broken it.

Once he sat down on the bed, Rhett didn’t move a muscle and instead kept his gaze on his hands which he was fiddling with awkwardly. What was he supposed to do now? He supposed unpacking would be the most logically choice but he couldn’t bring himself to do it just yet. He felt like a test subject under a scope and that his every move was being carefully watched. Not that he knew if his roommate was actually staring at him or not but it felt as though he was stuck and couldn’t make a move without it being the wrong move and somehow slipping up.

Well….this was awkward and uncomfortable and Rhett just wanted to leave, to forget this whole thing and request to have a room without a roommate or at least a female roommate. He could do that, right? They would have to let him switch rooms if he couldn’t handle it…right? Actually he really wasn’t sure about that, he’s never gone to a boarding school after all and the prestigious public schools he went to were very high class and most of the students could get most of what they wanted if they asked or their parents had the right amount of money. That part of his life was long over though and just thinking about it made his ears droop down a bit once again and something of a frown to cross his face.

When the boy across the room spoke up and interrupted the prolonged silence, Rhett’s ears once again perked up in an alert manner and he lifted his gaze to look at him. Don’t be nervous? Hah! He was in a room… a secluded room with a cute guy he was supposed to live with! How was he not supposed to be nervous?! He gave something of a meek smile at that and shifted, running a hand through the loose strands of his long black and white streaked hair.

And there it was…a question and not a question he could answer with a shake or nod of his head or even a smile but one that required an answer. He seemed to freeze up a bit and stare at the other boy like he had said something really awful. His name…there was an easy answer to that but it was always the most difficult thing to say, especially when introducing himself. His lips parted as though he was about to answer but nothing came out. It was as though his vocal cords closed up on him and his entire body grew paralyzed....he couldn’t do it, he couldn’t even get a sound out. Damn it! He was already being awkward enough not to be staring like an idiot with his mouth gaped open like a fish out of water!

He immediately began becoming self-conscious and feeling about it and turned his gaze away from his roommate once he could get his body to listen to him again. He clamped his mouth shut once again and went back to fiddling with his hands as he tried to think of what to do. He could always pretend to be mute…yeah that could work….then he wouldn’t have to worry about ever answering to anything! But then he would be completely lying and what if he slipped up or his roommate learned the truth and hated him for lying? His shoulders visibly dropped at that and that frown from earlier returned to his face. Why was he so pathetic?

He didn’t have much time to dwell on that however as suddenly something landed in his lap and he nearly jumped out of his skin because of it. He gave an involuntary audible sound of surprise and scrambled back a bit, the hairs on his tail practically standing on end and his ears flattening down against his head. When he looked down and realized what it was however, his heartbeat slowed down after having sped up from being startled and he seemed to relax a bit as he drew in a deep breath. When the kitten began rubbing itself up against him as cats did and its thoughts became more audible in his mind, he gave a small but genuine smile this time. At first he just sat there, then gave a light laugh at what it was exactly that the cat was thinking of and went to pet her as any might when a kitten suddenly landed in their lap.

He still didn’t say anything at all and for a long moment, only gave the kitten attention until an idea came to mind. He stood up suddenly and placed the cat on the bed, having relaxed enough to finally move, although he was still a bit awkward and hesitant. He crossed the room to Calan’s side and without asking, snatched up a notebook from his desk and pen before taking a seat back on his own bed. He didn’t explain anything and simply went flipping through the notebook until he found a clean page but didn’t stop to read or look at anything that might have been in the notebook already. He didn’t want to seem like he was snooping but he didn’t have any paper of his own just yet as he hadn’t gotten any school supplied before coming to the dorm and this was the easiest way he could think of for him to communicate without making a complete fool of himself.
Before he started writing however, he did glance up at the red haired teen and give him something of an apologetic smile, hoping he wouldn’t get pissed off at him and pummel him into a pulp for stealing his notebook and pen.

‘My name is Everett but I go by Rhett. Don’t call me Everett.’ He wrote down on the paper in large enough print so that the other could see when he held it up. The tone the words held could have been demanding or defensive but Rhett doubted he would actually be able to speak to someone like this out loud. Not when it would come out chopped up and sounded silly rather than confident. He wanted to be confident and decided that is what he was going to try for; this was a new place with new people who didn’t know him at all and that wasn’t something to be nervous about but to take advantage of, right?

‘I don’t speak very well and I’m not going to, so don’t try and make me.’ He wrote next before holding the notebook up again, hoping that it would come across like he was sure of himself and wasn’t about to take crap from this guy if he tried anything.
