Felen did not opt to share more details of his own story. This was neither the place nor the time for that. Originally this was supposed to be a brief and quiet respite from his duties. Giving advice felt odd, given that he himself was certainly no expert on this place.

"Friends maybe? Or allies if friendship is too strong or too far beyond your comfort level? It's ok to need people to rely on here."

"But ultimately I would suggest trying to avoid making sense of this place as related to what you knew about your home. You want it blunt? The rules here are not the same. That's hard. But also gives you an opportunity to start over. You don't have to learn everything right away. Just take your time and be happy that you're allowed to learn things here without being torn apart."

"Friends" Maarab mouthed the word, not even attempting to say it out loud. Then he broke into a brief but genuine smile, tilting his head in acknowledgment and listening to the rest of what Felen had to say.

"I am well aware they are not the same. I ask and I read. You people are in a different world. How can I learn empathy when I do not have a base to relate to you." He took a breath, struggling to find a semblance of calm, let out a shuddering unsteady laugh. "Maybe I am too impatient. "

Maarab searched the shadows again, before he added, "Is it so strange that I miss home too."

"That place was your home. Where you grew up. It's natural to miss your home even if it isn't as comfortable or easy to fit in there now." He nodded. Even if the man's home was literal hell, the answer would have still been the same.

"But you can also make this place your home too. And I take issue with you claiming to not have a base to relate to me. Or almost anyone else here. Empathy starts with recognizing that other people have feelings whether we have matching ones or not. And you and I are both soldiers even if we've left the wars and our commanders behind. You're looking for purpose here just like I was when I first arrived."

Maarab took on a thoughtful look. "You are the only person to acknowledge that . " He was at least self-aware enough to know that mattered to him, even if he could not have said why. He went to type something else then changed his mind, moving his left hand so he would be less distracted by typing and able to pay more attention to what Felen was saying.

Unable to find anything in Felen's words that he disagreed with, Maarab simply nodded and took a moment to consider before he typed anything. "I apologize for any insult." The robotic voice stripped any tone, but he attempted to look as sincere as he could. Respect was one thing he understood.

"I meant that if I am starting over it is without a foundation. Or it is unstable. I have never been so left to my own devices in learning." He stopped himself there, feeling he was at the limit of his ability to explain, and not quite ready to outright ask for help. "How did you handle the freedom here before you found it? "

"No offense taken really, just be careful when you compare yourself with others. There are many differences and similarities you might not be able to detect. And that will be true even after you learn more about empathy."

Felen chuckled though when asked about what he used as his foundation when adjusting to the island. "Me? I was aimless until I found someone who I could work for that I could respect. I'm just a soldier, like you. I don't do well without a cause- a purpose."

"In short, a job helps greatly. For both purpose and to give me the sense of a regular schedule and demands to be filled. Freedom, but with limits set by both myself and my circumstances."

"What about you? Would you prefer to work and do your learning on the side maybe?"

"More a weapon than a soldier. " He absently scratched at the scar on his throat after typing, frowning in thought for a moment. He knew a job would help. Felen was hardly the first to suggest it and Maarab had been looking more seriously for one since he returned.

But he had also held back from going after the simple jobs he could get with his lack of experience. Maarab shook his head. "Learning, school is why I came back. I paid for it." A short laugh and a grin, this conversation was leaving him on edge again. "Do you have any idea how strange it is to be asked what I prefer"

"No, you're not a weapon. Believe it or not there's a very simple way to tell the two apart. Weapons don't make decisions for themselves. Soldiers do. You did. You do, every moment you're here looking to learn and talk to someone like me about how you feel." Felen could feel a certain sternness in his tone despite himself. Almost like he was advising a subordinate but not quite so strict. In his judgement Maarab didn't need, and would neither appreciate nor respect, coddling. He needed the facts.

"Frankly Maarab," he shook his head, "I don't know and don't really see a reason to try to guess how it feels. The fact is that here what you prefer matters just as much as what opportunities are available. If you wish to learn then the school will gladly provide for you if you cannot afford it or cannot manage to focus on a job while also in school. Take what you say you've paid for."

"I did. " Felen's tone was just what Maarab needed to pay attention now when he felt he was floundering in his thoughts. He looked over at the other man, for once not deflecting with a grin. Then he nodded, typing hesitantly. "You are right. If I had been a proper weapon they would not have needed to use mind control."

Maarab stifled a laugh, as a couple black feathers floated to the ground behind his chair. He did not want to show how much his own statement unsettled him. Then he took a breath, mouthed out a silent "thank you", hoping Felen would understand it.

"There is a lot to learn if I do figure out what I prefer." He paused in his typing, putting his hand to his mouth. "I should commit to my rebellion. It is good to have someone point it out. I am not giving up."

Felen nodded. Disagreeing maybe with the specific details Maarab was focused on didn't mean he couldn't also see the positive direction the man was maybe moving towards. "For what it's worth, you don't always have to think about what you prefer. Most of the time the things you find yourself doing often, when not required to do them, are things we prefer to do."

"If finding out who you are and learning about the other people and things here are your rebellion then I support your fight. Collect allies where you can, Maarab. A reliable ally is worth far more than any master's weapon."

"Makes sense. " Maarab shrugged, more casually than he felt at the moment. "It still seems odd preference having an impact, but there is so much more here." Looking down at his shadowy arm and away from Felen he added, "Perhaps sometimes I want to be more than a soldier. Some lessons are hard to unlearn."

A short laugh, Maarab bared his teeth in a smile more sincere than most he'd given so far when Felen offered his support. "Not the fight I expected. Somehow some people here are more than convenient allies. Though I do wonder what you get out of this friendship."
