Some grandchildren to help remind him that the world isn't so awful? Bonus points if said grandchild is a total disaster.
Some old people friends with whom he can reminisce about the good old days and debate philosophy?
Some young people friends who'll put up with him long enough to teach him how to use a smartphone? Don't worry, he actually likes learning new things!
