Poking Chloe on the nose made her blush so hard she could feel her cheeks burning.

They shook hands. ‘Blue Fire’ asked if she was Gabriel’s daughter. “Yep, that’s right. I’m Chloe. Nice to meet you, uh, Blue Fire.” It was kind of a silly stage name, in Chloe’s opinion.

The action on the main stage wasn’t escaping Chloe’s notice. That guy had an incredible body, and he didn’t have a face getting in the way to distract anyone from this undeniable fact. Chloe’s gaze occasionally left Blue Fire to watch him, but never for too long.

“You said you met Gabriel before working here? What was he up to in your dimension? And, uh, what was that name you called him? Skibberin? Su-gib-rin?” The half-demon was trying her best to pronounce that, but Blue's language wasn't made with human mouths in mind.

"It's nice to meet you too, sweetheart! If you liked the show, can you go sweet talk your father into raising my pay?"

Janica looked at Mell flatly and Mell had to laugh. "What, it couldn't hurt!"

What was he up to, she asked. The better question would be what wasn't he up to. Mell could remember vividly the time S'ghibrin stapled the mayor's boxers onto the city hall front door when he threatened to shut down his illegal brothel.

"S'ghibrin," she said, nodding. "Oh, you know, the usual antics if you know him. Sex and drinking, stupid jokes that cross lines sometimes. We weren't human so he couldn't do his dumb demon shit on my planet, but he was still a pretty good fuck, all things considered."

She paused. "Er, sorry, that's probably not the sort of thing you want to hear about your dad."

Chloe laughed once, a single, drawn-out “Hah!” Her smile was genuine. “I don’t know about getting a raise for you, but…” she shrugged. “I’ll put in a good word for you.”

Blue was assuming that Chloe knew things about Gabriel, and that she had some sort of deep, emotional connection to him. These were probably fair assumptions, with how much Blue knew.

“Eh,” she shrugged, “No harm done. I mean, he’s my father by birth, yeah, but I’ve actually only known him for… just a couple months, I think? I’m still getting used to the idea of him being my dad.”

For a moment, Chloe remembered how much she missed her parents. The ones who raised her, who used to support her. She hadn’t seen them in well over a year, and might never see them. They probably thought she was dead by now. Or worse.

“What did you mean by ‘dumb demon shit,’ anyway? Serious question, I legit don’t know.” Chloe might be doing that ‘dumb demon shit’ herself some day; she doubted it was something her father would want to hide, if he was being honest with her.

Mell pointed to Chloe with her thumb, looking at Janica. "Look at this girl. She's as sweet as they go. You sure she's Gabriel's daughter?"

Janica laughed. "I'm pretty sure, Blue Fire."

Mell made a quiet 'huh' before listening to Chloe talk, leaning sideways on the couch and resting her cheek in her hand. She nodded at 'couple of months' and 'getting used to the idea', finger waving around as if she wanted to say something.

"Yeah, yeah! An unknown, illegitimate child. That sounds exactly like him. He's not really one for family planning and all that biz, and I can't imagine he'll ever be the cozy, brings you to ball games kind of dad either." She shrugged. "But it's great that he wants to take you in instead of, you know, swallowing you whole Greek mythology style... Heh. I've been reading up on Earth folklore. He's totally Zeus, right? Except he's somehow more of a dickbag, I guess."

...Demon questions now. Mell leaned in, not wanting anyone to hear. Most customers in the club didn't know Gabriel Baltimore was a demon, after all.

"Contracts," Mell said softly, only loud enough for Chloe to hear. "What else?"

Eating children sounded more like Cronus than Zeus, but Chloe didn’t want to stop the conversation to correct Blue on that.

“Contracts…” Chloe repeated, nodding slowly but not comprehending. Her mind first jumped to Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica but she was struggling to figure out why she was making that connection.

Her eyes lit up with realization. “Oh! Like-“ she stopped herself and quieted down, leaning in, remembering that Blue was probably keeping her voice down for a reason. People probably didn't want to know that Gabriel was a demon, even if it was obvious that she was sort of demonic. “Uh… excuse me. Like Dr. Faustus’s deal with Mephistopheles? Souls for wishes?”

That would be disappointing, if true. She had hoped that most of those stories about demons would be just stories. She had hoped that demonkind would be more misunderstood and slandered against than genuinely evil. Or maybe her father just so happened to fit the stereotype, and there were nicer ones out there. That much could still be true.

"Yeah. He tells me these extravagant stories of people wishing for something and he makes it happen," Mell said softly. She snorted, leaning back against the couch and paying attention to the headless stripper that went on-stage, but she did take a moment to glance at Chloe. She looked kind of... uncomfortable? She didn't really understand why, but she wanted to present her case at least.

"Honey. I don't know if you've noticed, but what your father does is just business. People offer him something he wants and, in return, he gives them what they want. I'd say it's a wonderful option for you humans. You get to alter reality, make yourself stronger, faster and better than what you were originally capable of. If I was given an opportunity to alter my life for something that wouldn't even matter after death, I'd take it."

Besides, her friend Gabriel had done much more heinous things than grant wishes. But she wasn't going to bring that up.

Near her, she felt Janica stiffen up and look away. She stared at a passing waiter, hoping to distract herself from the conversation.

Chloe shifted uncomfortably in her seat, distracting herself with the handsome headless man’s poledancing. “Well, Blue… I guess it depends on what he does with the souls. And what a soul is, for that matter.” Her mind was coming up with all sorts of horrible possibilities.

It could be something relatively benign, for all she knew, like trading eternal life after death for total oblivion. If Chloe was remembering her world religions correctly, that would probably make Gabriel a big hit with the Buddhists.

But that was probably wishful thinking, judging by how uncomfortable this conversation was making Janica. And honestly, she could just ask Gabriel himself about it later. If she was actually going to be like the knight to his feudal lord, he’d probably answer all of her questions about soul-bartering.

“This conversation is, uh, pretty heavy, though. Completely destroying the point of being at a strip club.” She chuckled, nervous. Here was a beautiful woman with scaly blue boobs sitting topless in front of her, and she was thinking about eternal damnation. Which would probably be appropriate if she was a devout Christian. “Subject change. How do lap dances work? I mean, I know I pay for them.” The going price for a lap dance was supposedly around twenty US dollars, whatever that came out to in Manta Carlos money. “But other than that, I am absolutely innocent, so I don’t know about these things.” She smirked. Who ever heard of an innocent demon?

She could worry about her possible father's possible evils later.

Mell was back to a subject she had more authority to talk about. She grinned mischievously and stood up, offering her hand to Chloe. "You could get one here but there are more private rooms in the back."

Mell looked at Janica for confirmation. The latter nodded. "Ms. Black can get free lap dances if she wishes."

"Ah..." Mell nodded back. Well, that was the policy. She knew Janica would be keeping mental tabs on everything Chloe did, so money was a nonissue.

"Do you want... me?" She swayed her hips enticingly, chuckling a bit. "Real talk, you should try the others, though. Everybody's been dying to get to know you and they'll explode if I keep you all to myself."

She waved at a topless fairy girl with luminescent pink skin and green hair like a beehive sitting at the bar. "Hey, Rose! This is the boss' girl!"

The fairy's walking turned into urgent jogging. When she got to Mell, Mell wrapped a hand around her waist and pulled her closer. "This is Rose. She's my girl."

Rose grinned shyly at Chloe, raising a hand. "Hi. Great to meet you," she said, in an accent so thick it almost sounded like she was buzzing.

Mell pointed at the headless man. "Jackhammer. Great name, right? Wonder what he hammered to get that name... if you know what I mean."

There were other strippers sitting at the nearby couches — a green witch, a girl that looked like a human worm, and a man with a horse head, who was aptly referred to as 'Stallion.' There were humans too but it didn't seem like Chloe was into that.

"There are way more, but hey, pick your poison. We're here to serve."

At the mention of a ‘free’ lap dance, Chloe seemed a little distressed. But Blue was already going on about the various strippers, and Chloe didn’t want to interrupt. She returned Rose’s greeting with a shy “hi, Rose,” struggling to keep her gaze at eye level.

She also had to tell herself not to laugh at Stallion. He was a hunk, definitely, and if not for his head Chloe would think he got that name for the bulge in his shorts. For all his better features, though, He reminded Chloe of those ridiculous horse-masks. At least the whites of his eyes weren’t visible; he has normal, completely dark brown horse-eyes. That was the only reason she could keep it together.

“So, uh, before I actually ask anyone for a lap dance, when you say ‘free…’ I mean, I know you’re trying to make a living here.” Chloe realized she was saying this to Rose’s luminescent pink breasts. She returned her gaze to eye level, blushing, looking from Janica to Blue Fire and back. “Does that mean anyone I ask would have to waste time with me instead of getting paid?” If that was the case, it would explain why Blue was suggesting she try the other dancers. “I don’t wanna be a drain on you.”

Mell looked at Janica. Janica brushed Chloe's arm awkwardly.

"When Gomorrah was made and the employees handpicked from wherever we came from, Gabriel Baltimore listed down a set of rules for us to follow and one of those rules was to give you the best experience possible. He didn't want us to feel scared or awkward about serving you so he told me to keep tabs on everything so he himself could pay for them later."

Mell snorted. "And it's going to be thrice our usual fee! I'm not really pressing for cash right now, would be nice to get some extra to spend, but Rose here could really use it."

"Blue!!" Rose shook Mell's arm frantically. "D-don't tell his daughter that, geez." Mell rolled her eyes and said something about being 'proactive'. Rose smiled at Chloe sheepishly. "Pick whoever you want, honey."
