Tommy seethed, his teeth clenched in frustration. He snatched his card from the timid bartender and gave a substantial tip to make up for his outburst. He couldn’t wait to get home and close himself from the world. Maybe in the morning he just wouldn’t open up the shop. No, he knew he wouldn’t do that. But it was sorely tempting. What he really needed was a distraction. He was already scheduled to work every night this week and if he started early and stayed late he could minimize the time with which he had to contemplate life. Tommy glared at the bouncer, holding his head high and striding out of the bar as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

His eyes snapped to the girl-vampire as he passed her, his tired eyes failed to hold a glare and he turned his eyes to the floor as he pushed the door open. The outside air struck him like a cool wind and already had a sobering effect on the vampire. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and started walking, his pace slow and solemn.

Kicking at a rock, Tommy volleyed it for a few steps until it skittered out of his path. With a sigh he stopped and looked skyward at the gray clouds obscuring the stars. In the silence Tommy drew out his phone and navigated to his messages. With hesitant fingers he hovered over the play arrow before his weakness grew and he pressed it. ’Hi Tommy, it’s me…’ a sad female voice filled the silence. ’I know I’m the last person you want to see, but I’m back in town so… I miss you.’ Tommy stopped it and closed his eyes against the pressure building behind them.
