Dela gently wrapped her arms around Sela, feeling how light and cloud-like the other was. It was rather like hugging the world's softest pillow. She did feel better, and after one last squeeze let Sela go. "I guess it's an empathy thing. Like, I can understand how you feel. Maybe not exactly, but I can imagine.

"I. . . I think I'm starting to understand." It was like the old saying, between a rock and a hard place. Can't go but can't stay. Stuck in limbo. "How are you dangerous?" She questioned, this was the first she's heard of Sela being dangerous.

The hug improved Sela's mood somewhat. The stars on their body sparkled a little brighter. It was hard to tell if Delaney felt better, but based on the length of the hug, she must have appreciated it to some extent.

Sela was about to respond to Delaney's comment about empathy. It was something they were slowly learning to wrap their head around. But then she brought up how they were dangerous.

But she wasn't the one who brought it up. Sela was, and they hadn't realized it.

"Ah." Was all they said for a couple of seconds as they collected their thoughts, partially with the help of Jao and Myst. Lying was their first choice, until Myst explained to them how that would only strain their friendship if it was revealed.

In the end, Sela told only as much as they felt was needed to answer the question. "I was on my own when I was awake. Before I came here. I would eat people to survive. The school told me that wasn't okay. That hurting people isn't okay. I don't do that anymore. I only eat animals. Sometimes objects."

Delaney waited for Sela's answer, perhaps a little apprehensive of what it would be. She knew there were people who, before living on the island, did many. . . bad things. It kinda scared her for a moment to think that Sela could have been one of them. Delaney pushed that fear aside, because that's the whole point of the pardon system. Give people a second chance. She may have not done anything awful. . . but the island was her own second chance.

"Eat people, huh." Delaney said, her voice flat in an attempt to keep it neutral. It was strange to wrap her head around, but she's already made up her mind about Sela. "Well, I wouldn't want to see people eaten, and not harming others is a rule of the island." She winced, this wasn't coming out right at all. "Like, what I mean is. Like, it's- I'm not scared.

"That was in the past." Delaney groaned, as she didn't know what she was trying to say. "I'm not scared." She insisted, and meant it. Maybe she was being dumb but she didn't think Sela was dangerous. "The island has its own rules, and maybe you gotta follow more rules than before but no one should try to make you be something you're not.

"What I'm trying to say is you should be able to be you, and so long as you aren't hurting anyone then being you should be okay." That sounded better, but she still nervously played with the hem of her sleeves, scared she didn't come across right.

The flatness of Delaney's voice confused and reassured Sela. Neutral tones indicated apathy. There were always exceptions, but Sela liked to think that Delaney didn't dislike them for what they've done.

Her attempts to make herself clear was more difficult to parse the meaning of. "You're okay," they replied, picking up on her discomfort. "I'm smiling right now. Here isn't all bad. If I don't like it, I can stay in my dreams for a long time." That was part of why their age was so complicated, according to the school.

"I like you. And Georgette. And Roland. And some other people. You're one of the few people I like here. So I'll follow the rules and won't cause trouble. I have to figure out how to not first..." The conversation they had with the dragon in the library came back to mind. Finding the right balance of being themself was important if they didn't want to be hurt.

A smile appeared on her face when Sela described their own smile. "That's good. That it's not all bad and you can go into your dreams when you need too." Delaney's smile widened more. "I like you too, Sela. and so does Georgette." Sela trailed off and she couldn't begin to parse what Sela had tried to say.

Delaney felt more determined than ever. "We'll figure this out! You're not alone and with me helping you're sure to succeed. And I can say that because once I got something on my mind I don't stop till I do it." She reached out and hopped that was Sela's shoulder she was touching. "But first, why don't we have some fun?

"I don't know about you but after a lot of serious talk or thinking I gotta go do something fun. 'Cuz then you'll be ready to tackle all the responsible stuff!"

Delaney was right on the mark. Her words were comforting, and the energy she spoke them with reassured them that she wasn't lying.

A couple of seconds went by in silence as Sela collected their thoughts. "That makes me happy. I'll come to you for help when I need you." They paused for a few more seconds. "Something fun... The mall always makes me relax. There's a lot of company but not everyone's attention is focused on you. And there's stores. A lot of stores to explore. But... I'll do whatever you want to do." Hanging out with Delaney felt like the cure to their mood, but their voice betrayed the utter exhaustion they felt after everything leading up until now.

The mall would be fun! Delaney liked going there with her friends and checkout out all the neat stores. "Yeah! All the food places that are there too, I've been trying to hit up each one and I'm not even a a third of the way through them all." It was a tempting prospect but Dela had to curb her enthusiasm some.

First, she had like no money at the moment and half the point of going to the mall is to buy something. Secondly, 'I'll do whatever you want to do' is code for 'I'm too polite to tell you what I'd really like to do.' Especially when Sela sounded as tired as it did. "Let's go hang out in the school courtyard." She suggested. "We can get a blanket and lay in the grass and enjoy the weather."

Sela nodded at that, only realizing soon after Delaney couldn't see. "I like that idea... I like it a lot, actually. I learned a lot about the animals and plants in the forest. You like knowing stuff. I can tell you everything I learned. The Forbidden Forest has a lot of interesting species." And seeing how students weren't allowed to go into the forest (which apparently wasn't well enforced), they figured it aligned well with Delaney's desire to learn trivia that wasn't important. If it was important? Then Sela potentially saved a friend.

With a course of action agreed upon, Sela alerted Roland that the two would be heading out to the courtyard. Almost a minute passed with Sela having to convince Roland that they didn't need to be watched when Delaney would be there with them. When he finally conceded, they rushed Delaney out of the dorm before he could change his mind or try to follow.
