Fehralyn knew you couldn't be a soldier without knowing things aside from just combat, at least in her dimension it had been so. But she was satisfied, for now, with the gist of it being combat skills. And to the rest she listened with a focused expression, turning her head to actually look at Masami. She had heard of the arena, and when Fehr had just arrived on the island she had considered fighting there to earn some savings. But Fehr had not wanted to risk miscarriage or serious injuries. But she was still intrigued.
"I've been meaning to visit the arena for quite some time now. I've just always found myself too busy."

"It would be entertaining for those that enjoy simple death without the show, even if they are few and far between."
Fehr said thoughtfully. She was similar, taught to just kill as quickly and cleanly as possible. All the birds before her Fehr could kill before Masami could blink his eyes. Fehr had such power, but she was glad she didn't have to use it. But that wasn't what she was focused on, not herself.
"I remember, in the community center, you said you couldn't help what you are, and now you say you were made to kill efficiently. Yet, you don't. Do you have other ambitions? Besides living a simple self-imposed exile."
After asking this question Fehr blinked once, and turned her head away and looked at the birds. She was getting nosy again.
"Excuse me, slip of the tongue. You do not need to answer."

"I'm a sword, miss." Masami repeated. He often felt like he had to remind people of this fact. Like they would forget and wonder again and again the things he took as fact for himself. "I say that to say, I don't know. What more should I want for myself? I have no ties, no one to actually-"

Actually what? It was hard for him to say. He was a sword, an item meant to be admired and used and cared for. Looking over at Fehralyn, he decided sure. No harm in telling her. "I want a wielder. Someone noble and honorable and intelligent. I have no one to look up to. To admire. So I have no reason to impress anyone. No Dono to give my loyalty to and therefore no one whom I represent by my actions."

Strange as it was, that was what he wanted more than anything. Not honor for himself, but to be honorable so that someone would by proxy feel honored to know him. To be his wielder. Because what good was a sword if it was not used? What good was a man who had no one to take care of and in turn take care of him?

It wasn't like Fehralyn hadn't encountered this kind of behaviour and way of thinking before, it was a very common thing in a war torn world. People and creatures were grown from the start to be instruments of conflict, and that was their only way of being. In Masami's sense it was much more literal, since he was a sword, from the start meant to cut down enemies by the will of his master.
Fehralyn had once been one with such mentality, she had thought the only reason she existed was to ride to the next battle. She understood Masami, in her own way, and even more so when he explained what he wanted. For a brief moment Fehr's jaw tightened, when she held back a sorrowful expression upon remembering the father of her child.

"I know what you are talking about."
Fehr answered after a moment, she thought since Masami had shared something personal she could do the same.
"I am a steed without a rider, and there was a time I wanted what you want now. A rider to complete me. But when I finally got the best rider I could wish for he was the one, who set me free. Taught me to be complete without a rider, gave me my interests and what I am today."
At this point there was the slightest smile on Fehr's face, as she gazed upon the birds.
"Your wish for a wielder is by no accounts wrong, and I am not aware of your circumstances or situation. I just wanted to voice that there are options, as someone who was once in a similar position. As someone who needed that extra push to be me."
Fehr wasn't afraid of Masami's anger or rejection, those she had experienced multiple times in her life. But she had wanted to at least say what she thought, and if Masami didn't care for or appreciate it that was fine and acceptable.

"Well maybe that's what I need then," Masami said thoughtfully, taking a moment to smile at Fehralyn. She was pretty wise, he noted. But that probably, like him, came from experience as a soldier.

He laughed a bit. "I'm used to being the one giving advice and laying out wisdom to others. It's nice for a change, being on the receiving end."

"Maybe you're right. But I won't know unless someone comes along who can give me that kind of motivation. Still it is a nice thought to have." Smiling a bit, Masami took out some more of his bird seed and scattered it on the ground. The birds wouldn't come to him the way they did for Fehr, but that was just fine by him. He didn't mind the boundaries.

Fehralyn was slightly surprised at Masami's reaction, and she glanced at him when he smiled at her. She returned the smile, Fehr was used to her words of wisdom being waved aside as the ramblings of a mere steed, only her rider had ever taken her seriously. Her rider and some of Fehr's closest friends.

"It's unusual for my advice to be so well received."
Fehr answered with a hint of a smile.
"More often than not it has been treated as a nuisance. So, thank you for letting me, hm, lay out wisdom for you."
Fehr said the last part bit more slowly and carefully, it was the first time she had used that particular saying.

"This island has many people, who would be suitable for that position. I have noticed that much during these few months I have spent here."
As Masami spread some more seeds on the ground Fehr took out her water bottle and took a sip. Her nose was starting to run and she sniffed a bit before putting the bottle away.
"But there is that saying. That what you need the most comes to you when you are not looking."

Masami's smile widened and he felt his heart grow a little lighter at her words. She maybe didn't understand his internal turmoil about all of this perfectly, but she seemed to better than others did. He nodded once and said, "And those who deserve power are not usually those who seek it. Just to add a bit to your seed of wisdom."

Noticing the sniffling, Masami kind of scratched at his cheek absentmindedly. "I know a place nearby. Makes good ramen. It's inside, so it'll be warm. And I'm sure there's something there you can eat. If you'd like, I mean. I just got paid so- ya know. I can take care of that."

He paused briefly and gave a simple one shoulder shrug. "Think of it as thanks for listening to me gripe."

Fehr could see a shift in Masami's energy upon him hearing her words, a positive shift, and her smile grew slightly as well when the man added his own wisdom to her words. Masami was right in his words, and Fehr merely nodded slightly as a sign that she agreed.
Fehr hadn't had this kind of discussion in a long time, she welcomed it. She only wished they could've had more time to talk, but Fehr could feel the chill was starting to affect her and she at least knew cold and getting sick were not good for her or the child she was carrying.

But before Fehr could cut their discussion short Masami offered to buy her a meal. Fehr turned to look at him, she wasn't one to let others pay for her, but she didn't have her wallet with her and Fehr hadn't received her first paycheck yet. She was a brand new teacher, after all. And if she was honest, Fehr was getting hungry after her run. But...
"This might sound very ignorant of me, but what is ramen? I have never heard of that particular food before."
Fehr's knowledge of this dimension was quite specialized, she knew its history thoroughly and was starting to dive into geography and biology, but when it came to foods she had explored as she had spontaneously discovered new foods.
"Although I gladly accept your offer, I'm rather curious."

Standing up slowly with a slight creak in his knees, sighing slightly as he felt his joints crack. He felt so old lately. Normally he'd gripe, but given his company was a woman five months pregnant he opted against it.

"Ramen itself is egg noodles. But there are vegetarian options and each bowl is made individually. You can choose all what goes in it. Very good broth."

Offering his arm to help her up, Masami tightened his scarf around his neck. He was sure she couldn't see his scars but it was still a sore spot for him. Having to butcher his body with weld marks when he got injured because there were no smiths skilled enough to actually repair him.

Fehr could hear and see the ailment in Masami's joints, she nearly considered offering a drop of her blood to subside the pain if he had any, but she decided against it. In her old dimension it hadn't been unusual but here Fehr casually offering blood to people was strange, even on this magic island.

Fehr listened to Masami's explanation of the dish with interest, and began to stand up when Masami offered an arm to help her up. For a moment Fehr looked conflicted, she didn't enjoy receiving help when she didn't truly need it and even then she preferred to do things on her own. But Fehr didn't want to be rude, and leaving Masami hanging when he had offered help would be just that. So Fehr took Masami's arm briefly and used the leverage to stand up.
"Ramen sounds, hm, interesting. Please lead the way."

Masami gave a small, surprisingly not mean sounding grunt as he helped Fehr to her feet. "If nothing else," he said, offering to let her walk ahead of him slightly. He could easily guide her verbally rather than stubbornly dragging her along like her better. "I know they do a really pleasant vegetable broth."

He hoped at least she would be able to enjoy the food. Masami grimaced inwardly at the thought of offering to treat someone to lunch only to find that they couldn't eat any of the food. Either way he wouldn't have long to fret: it was a short walk to the little shop, all cozy and warm and tucked away from the busy main streets.
