There are many sacrifices a grad student must make in the pursuit of mastery in a field of higher education. Sleepless nights, carpal tunnel from cramming a twenty-page paper in one sitting, the loss of dignity in becoming a glorified assistant to a pompous professor… All of this Alani could deal with. But today, her sacrifice came from giving up her friday night in the worst way imaginable. Instead of sweet-talking her way into the bed of a hot demoness she met a few nights ago, she was stuck conducting an interview for one of her classes- with a normie.

Instead of being in an amber-scented candle lit apartment downtown, she found herself making her way to the academy’s gym to search for the person she was assigned to. Part of being a political science major was obtaining an objective understanding of hot-button issues from both sides of the aisle. Since her focus was supernatural creature liberation and equality, she’d need to pick apart the mind of someone who historically would have been considered the enemy. But now, he was a peer. And she would have to hold her tongue in order to remind herself as such.

She stood in the entranceway of the gym, her slitted eyes searching for her subject behind yellow-tinted glasses. Immediately following a tongue-flick, her lips pursed in disgust. It smelled like an acrid combination of dirt, sweat, and an overabundance of testosterone. These sorts of places weren’t exactly her cup of tea, if any indication was given by the sound of her platform heels clicking against the linoleum. She tucked a rogue snake behind her pointed ear, looking for this dude. Where in Hades was he?

As she looked to her right, she spotted a masculine figure left behind as other people started to file out. She recalled the photo ID of this guy, his tattoos clearly giving him away. She cleared her throat. Here goes nothing.

”Excuse me, are you..” She looked down at her phone. ”Gwyn?” She kept up her approach.

”I’m Alani. Call me Lani. I’m here to interview for my ethics in human studies class. Are you available now?”

Ever since his unceremonious arrival to this place, there had been very few pastimes Gwyn had discovered that he could actually engage himself in. Beyond the casual, pervasive presence of monsters everywhere he looked, the environment itself was bizarre and unfamiliar, overflowing with technology and culture completely alien to what he'd known. To serve the dual purpose of occupying his mind and keeping his body at peak performance, a nearly religious workout regimen dominated much of his spare time. Even if he no longer stood any chance of facing the sort of threats he once had, the knight found some small comfort in this.

Today had been no different than any other spent here. He had been pushing himself a good bit more than strictly necessary, his various anxieties and discomforts about his situation here pushed to the back of his mind with burning, sore muscles taking center stage in their place. With all his focus held on the heavy bar he was lifting above his chest, Alani didn't initially catch his attention even with his name being called out. Continuing with his set for a few more seconds, he eventually registered someone else's presence, and with one last strained motion finally rested the weight.

Sitting up and starting to catch his breath, Gwyn simply looked over the newcomer for a few moments while he wiped away excess sweat with his towel. He had never seen this woman before, and he didn't have much of an idea what a human studies class was, but he didn't want to be rude. "...Yes, that would be me. Gwyn Avallach." Brow furrowed just slightly, he straightened up more to properly meet Alani's eyes. "I am afraid I have little to offer you of interest for your interview, in all likelihood. However, I suppose it would do no harm."
