There are many sacrifices a grad student must make in the pursuit of mastery in a field of higher education. Sleepless nights, carpal tunnel from cramming a twenty-page paper in one sitting, the loss of dignity in becoming a glorified assistant to a pompous professor… All of this Alani could deal with. But today, her sacrifice came from giving up her friday night in the worst way imaginable. Instead of sweet-talking her way into the bed of a hot demoness she met a few nights ago, she was stuck conducting an interview for one of her classes- with a normie.
Instead of being in an amber-scented candle lit apartment downtown, she found herself making her way to the academy’s gym to search for the person she was assigned to. Part of being a political science major was obtaining an objective understanding of hot-button issues from both sides of the aisle. Since her focus was supernatural creature liberation and equality, she’d need to pick apart the mind of someone who historically would have been considered the enemy. But now, he was a peer. And she would have to hold her tongue in order to remind herself as such.
She stood in the entranceway of the gym, her slitted eyes searching for her subject behind yellow-tinted glasses. Immediately following a tongue-flick, her lips pursed in disgust. It smelled like an acrid combination of dirt, sweat, and an overabundance of testosterone. These sorts of places weren’t exactly her cup of tea, if any indication was given by the sound of her platform heels clicking against the linoleum. She tucked a rogue snake behind her pointed ear, looking for this dude. Where in Hades was he?
As she looked to her right, she spotted a masculine figure left behind as other people started to file out. She recalled the photo ID of this guy, his tattoos clearly giving him away. She cleared her throat. Here goes nothing.
”Excuse me, are you..” She looked down at her phone. ”Gwyn?” She kept up her approach.
”I’m Alani. Call me Lani. I’m here to interview for my ethics in human studies class. Are you available now?”
