And Carmin's suspicions were correct, they totally thought he was some kid. He hated having to clarify this with everyone, Mostly because it was embarrassing and weird. But Ellen’s reaction wasn’t really all that bad, rather than being weirded out she mostly just seemed sorry that she assumed he was a kid. He didn't like the fact that she thought he was younger, but he couldn't bring himself to get angry. She seemed so sorry and it wasn't even her fault.

"It's... fine." He just wanted to move past it and pretend the misconception had never happened. "I'm not from around here either, so I guess I understand how you feel." He'd go on to mumble under his breath "I don't know how anyone gets used to this."

He would then stare awkwardly at the sidewalk and then back at her. "I'm going to head back to the school now, I'll see you around." He'd turn to start walking, then turn around again right away. "And I'm-" He'd stop for a moment, biting his lip. "I know I'm weird so it's not your fault for thinking I was a kid." He'd turn back around quickly and start walking back to the school, without even considering the possibility that Ellen might have to come the same way as him. His walking was pretty slow, given his little legs.

The boy’s presumed understanding of Ellen’s thought process was a saving grace, making her feel not so stupid for assuming something that she should not have despite such assumption being completely natural for someone who lived in the narrow reality up until only a few months ago. But there was one thing that the young lady did not agree with.

However, the boy started storming away before she could even really address it, as it was the last thing he said before turning his back to her fully. Looking around for a moment, Ellen then made her mind up. The original plan was to get the supplies and then look around the city a tiny bit before heading back.

But seeing that the boy was also from the school and was heading the same way she’d have to use, she figured there would be no harm in getting back a bit early. Pushing into the metallic wheels of her chair, Carmin would soon probably be able to hear the sound of them rolling over the ground next to him. And if he did not, then he would surely hear the girl’s voice.

Just for clarification, I don’t think you are weird at all. So you shouldn’t think that way. Oh, don’t mind me, I am also headed to the school, hehe.” With the soft chuckle, she hoped to ease the somewhat awkward atmosphere that was created between the two of them. She found the boy interesting, to say the least. And she rarely had a company to chat with like this.

Walking quickly at first and then transitioning into a more casual walk, Carmin was slowly making his way back to the school. He always seemed to run into awkward situations when he tried to interact with people and as per the usual, he was now just trying to run away rather than come to any sort of resolve. He just didn't remember it being so hard to talk to people. He used to be perfectly alright with it, but now it was impossible for him to carry out a normal conversation.

He couldn't stop thinking about it no matter how hard he tried, and even got to the point where he could hear Ellen's wheelchair in his head. Or maybe it wasn't in his head. He'd stop in his tracks and turn to see the girl approaching and then talking to him. He didn't speak, instead just looking at her with wide eyes and confusion.

Seeing this girl chase after him to tell him he wasn't weird made him feel like he was going to cry, but he managed to hold it in. Ellen's chuckle and explanation that she was heading in the same direction worked to somewhat clear the awkwardness, enough so for Carmin to respond normally. "O-oh, I see. We can walk back together then I suppose." Wait, was it weird for him to say that? What if Ellen didn't want to? His thoughts slowly pushed more words out of his mouth. "If you want to of course, you don't have to..."

Ellen was hardly any good at coming up with good ice-breakers, but at least for this one instance, it seemed to work just fine. That was at least some relief on her part as she smiled back at Carmin gently. She genuinely wanted to make new friends in this new and unfamiliar place.

Especially knowing now that the boy was older than he appeared, it no longer felt as odd in her mind as before. Though his appearance might have begged others to differ. However, the girl didn’t particularly care much about that. Not to mention that the boy seemed to have some problems that he did not dare to speak of yet.

Which was completely natural, the two of them had only just met, after all! But being the gentle soul that the girl was, she always wanted to help those around her even if it sometimes came at the expense of her own time and health. So when he asked whether she would be willing to walk with him, she happily nodded.
Of course! I’ll do my best to keep up with your pace, so you don’t have to worry about me in that regard!” She sounded genuinely joyful as she started pushing at the wheels of her chair when they got going again after the short exchange.

She didn’t want to make the situation awkward again, so she didn’t keep silent for long, either. “Do you also live in the dorms? Or simply going to the academy for your classes?” Hopefully, that was innocent enough question to get them started, she certainly didn’t want to spook him in any way or make him feel questioned about sensitive topics.

There was a small but notable boost in Carmin's confidence when Ellen replied so surely. He'd been wearing an almost worried facial expression after asking the question but it seemed to fade away shortly after he got her response.

Carmin was well aware that he wasn't a very fast walker. His stupid legs were horrible at it and people always seemed to be walking around him at a much faster pace any time he tried walking casually. Despite this, Carmin tried to pay attention to how Ellen was doing and would try to slow down if it looked like it was difficult for her to keep up.

He was still worried about what he was going to say or how he was going to talk to her too. He wasn't good with conversation before and he wasn't about to miraculously get better at something so impossible. Luckily, Ellen seemed to ask a pretty simple question that made it easier to talk. "I live in the dorms. Um, what about you?"

The girl was quite grateful that she didn’t have to move too far. She was plenty used to pushing her wheelchair along, but it was not exactly the easiest job on the planet either. Especially on more rough surfaces. Thankfully the road to the school was a smooth one, which saved her a lot of trouble.

At the very least it kept her arms fit! And Carmin wasn’t too hesitant to indulge her and her questions, which meant progress. “I am the same. Since I came to the island not too long ago. I’ve lived pretty far away from here up until a few months ago, in Italy! Have you ever heard of Italy?

Since it seemed that he wasn’t quite able to continue the conversation without feeling too awkward, Ellen figured that she should try to take the helm and see where they would get. And if he would get at least a bit more comfortable around her, that would be mission accomplished for her!

He certainly knew that Italy existed, but aside from what he'd learned from an Italian restaurant, he didn't know a whole lot.

"I've heard of Italy before, that's where pasta came from. Though I have to admit I don't know much else apart from that."

He scrunched his face a little confused by something. He had assumed that Ellen was just a normal human, but if that was the case and she was from Italy then what reason could she possibly have for ending up on the island.

"W-why did you leave Italy to come here?" As far as Carmin was concerned, this place was far worse than the narrow reality, someone wanting to come here just because they wanted to sounded nuts. But even if that was the case, how did she find out that the island even existed?

Ellen just had to chuckle again. “Well, a lot of pasta is imported from there, but it’s actually more likely that pasta itself came from certain Asian foods.” The whole thought was a somewhat amusing problem, too. And it managed to make her hungry for some spaghetti as well.

That aside, there was the question of why the girl was even here. Taking a moment, she eventually answered with a smile on her face. “Well, there is a lot of reason why a person could end up in a wheelchair. But I don’t exactly fall into any of the common categories.

Taking hold of the long dress skirt, she lifted it up ever so slightly. Nothing of a lewd nature, of course! Just enough for her legs to be at least partially visible. “I’ve been cursed. And until now, no one has been able to help me. That is why I’m here. Maybe someone will eventually be able to lift the curse and return my legs to me.

Discovering that his one fact about Italy was wrong certainly was a surprise. Carmin simply responded with "Oh."

Carmin squinted as Ellen began to explain their reason for being at the island. It was already beginning to sound like maybe he shouldn't have asked that, yet she was still smiling as she spoke.

When she revealed her legs to have been cursed, Carmin tensed up. "I-I see, I'm sorry I shouldn't have asked." Carmin was well aware of how difficult curses were. They were hard to deal with and even harder to get rid of. With all the crazy powers everyone seemed to have, one would probably assume that any curse could be cured rather easily, but Carmin knew all too well that it just wasn't the case.
