This was a subject he could have talked on for days. He'd been an academic, and learning to explain things - even basic things like mana - was something he'd been taught. One day, after all, it had been assumed that he would be teaching new students the most basic of basics.
"All living things have mana. I assume the same is true on this world, but it might not be so. In our world, mana is what... what gives life, I suppose. If you drain a tree of mana, it dies - it ceases to grow. If you drain a person of mana, their heart continues to beat, but they are no longer there." He'd never seen anyone like that, but he knew it had been more common in the years before he was born, as people had pushed the boundaries of what they could do. "That's the source of our magic. For small magic, I can use my own mana, and as long as I don't drain myself fully, it will regenerate, although going too low in mana can lead to one feeling..." He paused, unable to decide on a word. "Empty, I suppose." It was one of the first exercises young mages learned - to know the limits of their mana, to know what it felt like, so that they could know when they'd pushed too far. "The earth itself, while not living in a traditional sense, also had mana in my own world." A part of him wanted to test - to see if this world had mana as well - but considering what had happened in his own world, he was too nervous to do even a basic spell with it's mana.
