It was, as the extremely cliched old song went, a whole new world. Not that Enelen knew the song. 'The little mermaid' had an equivalent story in his world, but it was closer to the original German tale, and featured a lot more magic. It also had never been made into a disney movie with epic songs. Given the option, he'd have happily written out a massive paper about the similarities between fairy tales between the two worlds.

That said, he'd have happily written a paper on absolutely anything. Everything was new and fresh, delightful and interesting. Most people were fairly eager to get out of school, but Enelen had practically tripped over himself to sign up for it. He'd wanted to take all the classes. Of course, they'd told him he would have to limit himself, but he was already trying to plot ways to get into even more.

One of his classes was titled 'ritual magick', and it wasn't even happening for almost another three hours. That wasn't going to stop him from skipping lunch and beelining for the teachers office, who was down on his schedule as 'Mrs. Corbie'.

The truth was that he had no real idea what ritual magick actually was. It sounded familiar enough to his own world's School of Ritual, but since he wasn't actually from that school, he had minimal ability in it. He didn't really use any rituals in his magic, beyond planting his staff, making his intentions known, and being done with the whole thing.

Dressed in what would have passed as a school uniform anywhere but Starlight Academy, he knocked at the door, face bright and full of energy. He would figure it out. That was why he was at school after all.

Alice and Voldegra were pleased by her office. The academy had insisted on the customary class rooms above ground for her teaching place, but with her office they had been more lenient. A floor beneath the earth, reached by a single flight of stairs and across an empty cellar. The office had once been a closet, but slight reworking from the academy staff and furniture imported by Favorinus had made it a comfortably dim and cushioned nest.

At the moment Alice was checking her shelves. All of her Roman documents had arrived from England, so her Latin classes would be fully provided for. Voldegra had offered Alice the use of its scrolls, especially since the Ab Urbe Condita Libri in this age were so hideously incomplete, but she had considered this more than was warranted.

Though her door was barely open, she heard a clatter of footsteps skipping down the stairs. Light enough that Voldegra suspected a student rather than fellow faculty. This pleased her. Consulting her during office hours showed deference to her wisdom even before lessons began.

Alice sat down in a leather armchair made for humans far older. Such proportions reminded Voldegra of her doll's house back at the manor. Alice was not certain whether she was embarrassed or flattered by this sentiment.

He was excited for everything. Enelen had been an eager student even before things had begun to fall apart on his home world. While technically a student for the past three years, there had been little focus on theory. Everything had been about practical applications. Instant translation spells, spells that would help someone survive if they ended up in a situation where there was no human life... He'd missed the academic side of things, but he couldn't say he hadn't been happy for what he was taught. The school of staves had a tendency to put education before practically matters, and the death of his world had certainly changed that.

But there had been no need for the majority of his spells. The instant translation spell he'd woven into his current staff (which was, of course, with him at all times) had gotten plenty of mileage, considering he spoke a language that didn't even exist on this world. Everything else? Not so much. He'd come out on land (so no need for his air bubble spell), and in a place with both food and water (so no need for any of that entire book of spells). If anything, it seemed like his academics would serve him better.

He knocked at the door, grinning wide and full of energy. Alice Corbie seemed like a usual enough name, although he had no idea how common it was or wasn't. His world had pulled from a very different set of names, although some seemed to share similarities.

At the sound of tapping against her door, Alice reached over and pushed the door out. She looked up at the student standing outside. Voldegra believed him to be about the right size and shape for a young human, but seeing things from Alice's perspective did tend to make everything seem taller.

Voldegra was not fond of how humans saw space, and found visual perspective one of the less satisfying features of human vessels. Despite this, no form of vessel sensed quite like its direct awareness of all within its domain, so humans were only little worse than any other.

"Hello. I'm Professor Corbie." Alice waved a hand at a padded stool just beside the door. "You may sit if you like. What are you here for?"

Alice looked over her shelves again. This was more to reassure her that all was in place than to check which books had already arrived. She knew her libraries from memory, including the rather small one here in her office. "If you're here for course materials, I have all the texts for my Latin classes, and enough for the first few weeks of Arabic and Sanskrit. You could copy down what you need. I can also supply some magickal texts, but you'll need to convince me you can handle those. They can be dangerous in unskilled hands."

She was... well, she was a little girl. Or at least she certainly looked like a little girl, and his surprise no doubt showed on his face. He supposed she might not actually be a little girl. Sometimes appearances could be deceiving. Some mages - especially those in the school of ritual - had come up with ways to maintain their youth, even if they didn't extend their lifespan with it. Maybe she was one of those.

Or maybe she was really just twelve or however old she looked.

He stepped inside, composing himself and taking a seat on the indicated school. He looked every bit the dutiful student, dressed in a uniform (which was not the uniform of the academy, but still clearly recognizable as one) with a little brown pin shaped like a diamond pinned to his lapel. In his hand was a large and rather elaborate looking wooden staff, which he leaned against him as he sat.

"I'm currently signed up for your ritual magick class - I might go into the others but I'm still trying to juggle my schedule." Which was a mess, to say the least. "I guess my question is an odd one, but I'm not entirely clear on what ritual magick is. Without getting into the nitty gritty details, the type of magic I'm used to seems to work quite differently from the magic here, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it." He had only a vague understanding of how magic worked on this world, and he was hoping for someone with experience who would be able to cover it for him. A magic teacher seemed like the perfect source of that bit of information.

Alice gave her student a nod. The question was fitting, though it might take the whole of her class to fully answer. Longer for students who wanted to truly understand magick, perhaps a lifetime. "There are many kinds of magic here, and they're all different. I can tell you about mine, at least."

Alice picked Mr. Pudding up from her desk and set him in her lap, stroking his plush fur. This was far less dangerous at the moment than when he contained a demon, though even that did not always stop her. "There are forces in this world working on levels above our material space. Some are creative, some transformative, some destructive. Mostly people don't notice them because the forces are as much a part of our world as space and time and matter, and other things that seem too obvious to question. Magick is the practice of learning how to get the attention of these forces and convince them to do what you want. Ritual magick doesn't need any kind of personal power, just the skill to invoke the magickal forces properly. Does that make sense to you?"

Her explanation was clear enough, but it was also a much different way of looking at things than he was used to. On his world, magic was more about using mana. Most of the time the mana came from yourself - literally pouring out your soul to make the world change for you. Some people had called it willpower, although he didn't think that was quite right. It was something more than willpower. You could not just will magic to happen, even if willpower certainly played a part.

"Yes. It's very different from the way my world thought about magic, but your explanation is clear enough." It certainly wasn't her fault he wasn't entirely following. After all, her explanation probably made perfect sense for someone from this specific world. "I had never really thought of magic as... changing the forces of the world." It sounded too grand and epic, when magic was used for even the most mundane things.

Alice was amused by the thought of magick changing the powers that be. Though this was true in a sense, and certainly appealed to her pride, she would not say that her magick could bend the world to her will and reshape reality to her liking.

That way led a path of great power, but also of her own destruction. This would not be her path. "Think of my magick as a way to make use of forces beyond yourself to accomplish what you want. Do you know Archimedes? You can move the world if you have the right leverage. There are symbols and rituals that magickal forces respect, principles they follow. Learning how to apply these is like any other skill, though more complicated than most."

He shook his head when she asked if he knew an 'Archimedes'. He had no idea who that was. If they'd existed at all, they'd either been so obscure he'd never heard of them, or perhaps they'd lived a completely unnotable life.

"I wonder if they're the same as my world, but... I doubt it. Magic was always more... personal." The thought of magic respecting certain techniques sounded so strange to him. Magic was not thought of as an entity in his own world. "In my world, the limitations of magic were more about your skill with using it, and the amount of mana you would need." In theory, magic could do anything, but as it got more complex - and got into the realm of 'changing the universe' the amount of mana required became astronomical.

Alice's head tilted as she thought over the student's comments. His magic sounded almost like the power commanded by her demons, a source drawn upon to make will manifest but limited by the dept of this power. Alice knew that other magics were common here, but this one had caught her curiosity and Voldegra's interest.

"Tell me about the magic of your world. What is this mana you use for it? I know the word, but to me it is sustenance given by the adonai to his prophets. I do not think this mana is the same."
