Today was a was probably an ordinary day for most... but for the young Lamia named Iesha, today was a most special day. And on this day, was was going to try to be happy for it.

7:16 am:
Stray beams of sunlight peaked through the curtains in Ishea’s room and illuminated the sleeping lamia’s face. She at first gave small groan in protest but arose from her sleep. After she looked about to rotate herself and tasted the air with her tongue, Iesha remembered what day it was and slithered to the Islamic Calendar hanging on the wall. She stared at the date written in Arabic: Rajab 18[sup]th[/sup]. The young lamia at first grimaced at the date, but took in a deep breath and put on a smile. Today was going to happy.

“Where did leave my sketchbook…” quietly questioned Iesha as she tried to recall where it was.

11:44 am:
Iesha hummed a lullaby to herself as she played splayed out on the floor, drawing on a piece of sketch paper on her drawing pad. Iesha makes on last stroke with her pencil before finally being satisfied with her work. She always thought herself as mediocre when drawing but… this time she even surprised herself with how well the portrait came out. This was her 9[sup]th[/sup] or so attempt today but this one she was happy with. On top of the pencil marks she began to delicately ink in contours of the lines to makes some features more bold to the eye as well as writing a few words in Arabic before finally setting the brush aside. Iesha held up the picture to the sun and smiled at her work, a perfect image of a treasured memory. Then a voice called from the room next door, it was Narraine asking her for something but she didn’t quite make out what it was she wanted.

“C-coming Missss Narraine! U-uhmm-uhmmm… o-one moment please!” stuttered Iesha as she hide the drawing away from sight. It will likely be dried by the time she would be able to come back for it.

As she opened the door, Iesha took a deep breath and put on smile. Today was going to be a good day.

“I’m here! W-what did you need me for? A-also… M-miss N-narraine? D-do you... do you think you can take me somewhere today?”

1:21pm:
Iesha flipped through atlas she found in the book section of the store. It was full of all sorts of wonderful images and descriptions of places all around the world. Europe, Asia, North and South America… all strange and wonderful places with equally exotic people. Iesha knew that she just had to get this book, along with the puzzle called a Rubix Cube in the toy section and a candle that smelled of Jasmine. Trivial items they all where but… each of them held a special significance to Iesha, especially on this day.

Iesha smiled at the treasures she had collected today… they would make the most perfect gifts. Today was going to happy.

“Misss Narraine! C-can we get thisss book too? I-itss really nice! A-also… I think we have n-no camel meat again.”

2:26 pm:
“So one camel hump for you… that will be all?” inquired the butcher on the other side of the counter.

Iesha nodded and laid out the money Miss Narraine gave her earlier on the countertop for the butcher to take.

“Heh… something special going on today? I have been in this business long enough to know that the humps are usually saved for special occasions in Middle Eastern cultures.”

“U-uhhmm… I-I guess t-today is sssorta of a special day… but… I ave always been told the humps are the best part!”

“True… well the total is 49.99. And that will be out of… 60 so your change is 10 dollars and 1 cent. Here you now young one. Enjoy your special day with some special meal now!”

“Th-th-thanks…”

With the conversation over with, Iesha was quick take both the packaged camel meat and the change. Iesha looked back to Miss Narraine and happily slithered back to her. Normally it was Narraine who would handle such transactions but Iesha insisted that she bought the camel hump, which was normally uncharacteristic of her given her shyness among strangers. Even more so in butcher shop… seeing meets labeled and displayed made her feel nauseous. But as the butcher said earlier, today was indeed a special day. So she felt compelled to be a little braver than usual. After all, today was going happy.

“Okey Miss Narraine, ummm… I think I am ready to go home now… can you help me cook this when we get back Miss Narraine?”

10:30 pm
Iesha slowly poked her head through the curtains that lead into her room late in the late in the night. After looking about to see that that the coast is cleared, she stealthily wormed her way through the living room and into the kitchen to collect the leftover camel hump to bring with her. Iesha would them place it along with the other items she was bringing with her. Once she had everything, Iesha quietly opened the front door, turning to look at the doorway to Narraine’s room. Given that there was no response, Iesha slipped through quietly and made her way outside.

After finding a secluded grassy area near her apartments, Iesha looked around herself to assure that she was alone. Once she felt safe, she set the bag down and carefully emptied its contents: one candle that smelled of jasmine, one Rubix Cube, one atlas of the world, a hunk of cooked camel hump on plate, and one portrait drawing of young woman that Iesha drew earlier. She set the drawing perched on nearby rock so that she could look at it face to face as she assembled what looked to be a makeshift memorial of sorts. Iesha smiled to the portrait of the woman, and the women she thought smiled back.

Today was going to... happy...

She/her
It was already getting late and Narraine had already settled into bed for the night. She wasn't particularly tired however as she lay in the dark recounting the day and it's many events. For starters, Iesha had been acting unusual all day. Not that it was bad, she seemed to have more confidence and a more positive demeanor. the thing that struck her as odd was the drastic change that seemed to take place seemingly overnight. all this time she had hoped that with time Iesha would come out her shell, and learn to have confidence in herself, but instead, it just seemed to happen.

She sighed gently staring up at the ceiling, wondering if this meant she had done something right, or something wrong, when she heard the front door open and close. It was a faint, and slow like someone was trying to be sneaky. As heard the final click from the door she sat up and slipped out of bed. Her first instinct was to slither across the living room, to check on Iesha, and upon doing this she discovered the girl was gone. Narraine's heart raced as she looked around not finding any trace of her foster daughter anywhere. Had she run away? Is that why she was so different today? That was all irrelevant now. She needed to find Iesha, and get her back safe. Everything else could be talked about in the morning.

In a flash, she slipped back to her room, and dressed in some clothes for the outdoors, before slipping out the door after Iesha. She flicked her tongue, picking up the girls scent and set off to follow her. Luckily she found her not far from the apartment. The young Lamia had found a quiet spot and was setting something up. narraine held back now, keeping out of sight, and downwind from Iesha. She wanted to see what was going on and make sure this was safe.

“H-happy birthday Nesreen… ” chimed Iesha to the portrait to the portrait of the woman.

There was silence in the cold night air as Iesha and the drawing of Nesreen stared back at one another. Growing uncomfortable, Iesha grabbed the Rubix cube and held it out for the picture of her sister.

“I got you presentsss! L-like this… this Rubix cube! I-its like a puzzle… you have to match colors on each side… I… I dunno how it quite works but… but you would probably figure it out… y-your really good a-at puzzles...” Iesha set the cube aside, them picked up the candle.

“And… umm… h-here is candle that smells like you… jasmine. Y-you almost always smell of jasmine and… and it makes me think of you…” Iesha inhaled the fragrance of Jasmine from the candle before setting that down as well.

“I… I even got you your favorite meal… r-roasted camel hump! Misss Narraine helped me make it. Y-you always say that the hump is always the best part… soo… so i-its all for you Nesreen!”
Iesha smiled and pushed the plate of cold camel meat forward to image of Nesreen. Iesha looked to the atlas and flipped it open to a random page.

“Y-you would love this Nesreen… i-its called… an atlas! J-j-just like the titan! I-it shows not only the whole world but… but its people t-too! F-from all over! Y-you always wanted to see the world and… a-and…”

Iesha’s hands suddenly became shaky and the atlas fell from her hands and onto the grass. Tears welled in the corners of Iesha’s ducts, her breathing slowed as she was overwhelmed with a sadness.

“A-and its you w-w-who should be here. N-not m-me... y-you w-were the one w-who always t-talked about l-leaving a-ah-nund ah-nu-nd…*sniffle* a-und seeing the world. I-its so big Nesreen… r-really big! T-t-there is so much to see N-nesreen. I-I always t-thought t-the o-outside was s-scary l-like mom s-said it was a-and… an-und maybe it is but… but… but your right Nesreen… it’s... it's really beautiful.”

Iesha reached out and clutched onto the drawing of her sister Nesreen and spoke it even as she could feel the lump in her throat trying to hold her back from saying anymore and tears dripped from her face like lonesome raindrops.

“Y-you would haved l-l-love it N-nesreen… t-the people are so f-full of color and t-the places are soo full of life. Y-you were always the one w-who always w-wanted to e-experience i-it soo… s-soo… s-so w-why is that I-I’m t-the o-one here? I-its its its unfair… y-you where the o-one who deserved seeing t-the world t-th-the most… y-you sh-should h-have been the o-one h-here t-talking to M-miss N-narraine all about l-l-lamias a-and a-and m-making fr-friends a-at school! I-I j-justed wanted to hide… I-I-I don’t deserve t-this! Y-you d-died because of me… m-my b-best friend died b-because of m-m-meee…”

Iesha then hugs onto the drawing tightly with her arms, fat teardrops fell as she sobbed through the night.

“I-I m-misss y-you Nes-nesreen… I miss m-m-mom… I… I m-m-miss both of you. I... I just want you ba-ba-back… I… I want y-you to see a-all of the a-amazing things I’ve s-s-seen… I-I w-w-want y-you-”

Iesha held out the piece of wrinkled paper, sniffling as she smiled to the image of her sister… until a strong gust ripped the paper from her hands and blowing it far from her reach.

“Ahh! N-no no no! NESREEN!" cried out Iesha as she reached for the paper, dancing just out of her reach "No don’t... don’t leave me again… whimpered Iesha as she held out one hand as the image of Nesreen fly further and further away from her.

Devastated, Iesha coiled her tail tightly around itself, tiny rivers of salty tears cascade from her lilac eyes as she wept for the sister she had lost. Then, Iesha remembered something, and looked to the twinkling stars and the smiling moon. Nesreen always loved the stars... when she asked her about it why that was so, Nesreen told her that it was because it reminded her of how vast their world was and how much she wanted to be a part of it. If... if she was up there... Iesha knew that she would have wanted her to be happy... so... so why is it that she is so full of sadness and grief?

Near the apartments late at night, a wrinkled piece of paper floats down gently along the sidewalk.

Narraine was confident she had not been discovered as she hung back watching Iesha. As the girl went about, it was suddenly more and more clear why today had been the way it was. She was celebrating her sister's birthday. it was both one of the sweetest things she had witnessed, and one of the most heartbreaking. All the thing's Iesha had done today, the confidence, the smiles, all of it, had been for her sister. The special meal had been to celebrate and share. The atlas, the candle it all made sense. If Narraine had known, she would have helped, would have done more.

Watching this however caused her heart to fel heavy. She remembered the pain she had felt when she lost Aylin. How she would have given anything to get her back. The feelings of loneliness and despair following that loss. Still, she had always had hope in finding her sister. She couldn't imagine the feeling's that Iesha had to go through now. But no matter what Iesha was not alone anymore, she would be there to protect her and take care of her.

She had been lost in thought for a moment, thinking about what she was witnessing, when out of nowhere she heard Iesha cry out. Narraine looked up to see her reaching for the paper that had blown out of her grasp.

Narraine hesitated a moment before slipping out to collect the picture. Since she was still downwind that paper blew almost right to her. As it neared she bent down to pick it up, examining the face sketched so lovingly onto it. The girl, the sister, was beautiful and had a kind look about her.

NArraine sighed gently as she approached Iesha now. She didn't know what else to do. "Iesha..." It was all she could muster the strength to say. as she neared the girl. She held out the picture for her, fighting back her own urge to cry. Iesha's pain was contagious, and Narraine wanted nothing more than to comfort her.

Iesha watched the stars for a moment longer, longing for for her lost Nesreen. Maybe... maybe some part of her sister is up there among the star but... she would still be forever out of reach. Then she heard her name call behind her, causing entire body to shudder as she turned slowly to to source of the voice calling out to her.

"N-nesreen?" she asked tentatively... as if she was about to witness a miracle before realizing to her horror that it was Narraine "N-N-NARRAINE! Uhh... UHHH!"

Iesha panicked, how much did Narraine see? How much did she know? Iesha didn't want her to see her like this... she never wanted Narraine to know any of tragedies and the awful things she had been forced to suffer.

"I-I'm sorry! I"M SORRY! I j-just wanted to... b-b-be outside and... uhh... UHHH... I'll go to back to b-b-bed! B-back to bed... r-r-right now!" stuttered Iesha as she spun her body around to try to hide her little shrine from view from Narraine and tried to shove everything back into the bag haphazardly. She didn't know how much Narraine heard but... if she did know then hopefully they can just pretend that this night never happen. It... it would be better that way.
