To prank, or not to prank.

A small form crouched down before a door way, bright red eyes tracking his handiwork, and a playful, mischievous smirk flickered across his face. This was gonna be great...One thing nice about being part of this school, despite the uniform, there were lots of people he could target with pranks.

This particular one was pretty simple. A easy to snap thread was wound around the doorway, and held a small sack of flour a short distance above said egress. Once someone opened the door and stepped through, the thread should snap, dropping the sack and deploying the flour. Nearly satisfied, he carefully adjusted the string.

Little did Corvin know - he was being watched.

From beyond the three-dimensional space the boy could observe, his hall parent was watching him. From every angle, all at once, this vast being scrutinized the boy's behavior.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING," boomed a deep, wet voice. It came from all directions at once, but it was not angry. It was monotone, as though produced by a sort of computer. It had the inflection of a statement, rather than a question.

A pair of sunglasses emerged from the floor, held aloft by a pair of slimy blue tentacles. The sunglasses were aimed at the boy, "looking" at him. Goodall had switched from hats to sunglasses lately. Sunglasses make you look cool, and Goodall wanted to be both cool and relateable.

Cor held his chin, finger of the other hand gently running along the thread. All seemed ready....He bit his lip nervously. Though...maybe he shouldn't do this...Nah, it was already set up, and one or two pranks here and there on occasion wouldn't vilify him or anything.

The boy yelped at the sudden, loud voice, jumping. Grimacing as the prank is triggered, he catches the bag with a shadow tendril before it hit and burst, sighing in releif and retracting the tendril back under his sleeve, holding the bag gently in his right hand as the left rested over his rapidly beating heart.

Glancing at the shades bearing tentacles, Cor sighed. "Ah, Goodall. You startled me." He processed the question. "Uhm....what am I doing? Er..." Well...no point in lying...It was rather obvious what he'd been doing. "Well...I'm setting up a prank."

Goodall was silent for a moment.

His appearance seems to have unsettled the boy, which broke his concentration and made his contraption fall apart. At least he was able to catch the bag of powder material before it hit the floor and ruptured. Powder materials were very difficult to clean.

But the purpose of Corvin's original exercise still eluded him.

"I APOLOGIZE FOR STARTLING YOU. PLEASE DO AN EXPLANATION OF WHAT A PRANK IS."

Goodall realized after he said it that he said that sentence incorrectly. He should have said 'explain,' not 'do an explanation of'

Cor shrugged. "No worries." After all, he'd probably still have been startled by someone randomly speaking up behind him, even if it hadn't been a large, booming voice. His head tilts at the request, but he blinks."Oh,explain? Well...uhm...you see, a prank is a joke, a trick, on another person, for laughs. It can range from just minor things, to elaborate traps." He rubs his chin. "Course...you gotta be careful not to be too harsh, otherwise you wind up being a jerk at best, or a sadistic a....mean person at worst."

"I THINK THAT I UNDERSTAND," Goodall said. In a pocket dimension beyond Cor's ability to observe, Goodall was already looking through a dictionary to check what some of those words meant.

"I WOULD LIKE TO DO AN OBSERVE. PLEASE CONTINUE TO ASSEMBLING THE APPARATUS OF PRANK."

This was a rare, wonderful opportunity. Goodall had never observed this kind of behavior in humanoids before. He had to see it, and to record how the other humans responded to it. He was also curious about the purpose of the flour: how would the flour enable Cor to establish any sort of deception? Was he going to take advantage of some sensory limitation in humanoids to engage in the deception? Was that what the flour was for?

Cor blinked, then nodded as his hallparent requested he continue, walking over back to the door way and pulling more thread out of his pocket, talking quietly as he worked."You see...the thread will hold up the flour, and be a tripline at the same time. It's relatively easy to break, so when the door opens, that'll snap the line, and drop the flour, which will burst open and spill on the victim's head. Really, it's kinda juvenile, with nothing much more then a 'ha, I got you,' moment, but it's also not one of the worser pranks, and relatively easy to clean up."

(I'm really sorry for the huge delay!!! I never used to be this slow in response.)

This left Goodall even more confused.

"YOU TRICK THEM INTO COVERING THEMSELVES WITH FLOUR. THIS CAUSES THE AMUSEMENT. INFORM ME WHETHER OR NOT MY ASSESSMENT IS CORRECT."

Humanoid behaviors were completely baffling to him. Why would being covered in a fine white powder cause the humans to be amused? Was it because it was a deception? Was there some strange evolutionary reason that white powder caused amusement to humans? Goodall once saw a man inhale white powder through his nose, and when he asked his coworker about it he learned that this is illegal, and his job requires him to inform the campus police if he sees a student with white powder.

After investigating several of Goodall's reports and finding them faulty, they taught him about illegal drugs. Goodall still wasn't convinced that the cocaine's status as a white powder was entirely irrelevant, and this situation was causing him to doubt that claim even further.

"IS IT AMUSING BECAUSE IT IS WHITE POWDER OR FOR SOME OTHER REASON." The inflection was as a statement, but Goodall intended it as a question.

Cor blinked as Goodall responded with confusion. At least, he was pretty sure that was confusion. The boy nodded. "Yeah...that's right." Huh...maybe his dormparent didn't quite understand it? At the question(?), he blinked, then tilted his head in thought. "For some other reason...hmm...it's kinda hard to explain...pranks are funny cause...of...hmmm... Maybe pranks are funny partly cause you get to one up someone...could be the surprise of the other person as well...Think you'll have to ask someone smarter then me to get a real answer, actually."

"I WILL DO A QUERY OF PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT," Goodall resolved.

But in the meantime, he still wanted to observe this 'pranking' come to fruition. He withdrew his tentacle from the three-dimensional plane; there was no longer any evidence that Goodall was here and watching. "WHEN PRANKING APPARATUS IS COMPLETE I SHALL DO A STOP OF TALKING SO I DO NOT RUIN THE DECEPTION," his voice boomed.

He would stay there and wait for a prank victim to appear.
