"You're monologing, Godfrey," Frederick pointed out. "What did I tell you about monologing? Be careful when you do it. You don't know when's someone going to interrupt you with a bullet."

Someone like Genovese, now that he thought about it.

"If this is how you want it to be, then so be it. But if you continue your little campaign, I'll make an issue of it with the police. It's harassment, and I doubt they'd take kindly to it."

He ignored the comment about monologuing. Fredrick had no ground to stand on in that arena. He never shut up when he fought.

"I'm sure they didn't like hearing that you abused your only son for years. You did tell them about that, right? As part of the Pardon? There's no statute of limitations on that shit, and it happening in another dimension doesn't mean anything either."

Broen knew the asshole hadn't. He clearly didn't see anything wrong with it. And if he told the police. Admitted to it. That'd tarnish his sparkling reputation. And Broen had had a few months now to read up on the laws. "I mean, if you didn't tell them and they found out... man. You'd get eaten alive."

Was that it? Did he think he suddenly had the high ground?

"Legal in Halcyon city," he said. "You only claim pardons on things that aren't. Corporal punishment might be growing increasingly frowned upon, but it was common enough when you were growing up. Do you think I'd really have broken the law, Godfrey? Even the most bleeding hearts haven't even made an actual effort to ban it. You might have objected, but most don't."

Broen was on him in an instant. Ten long steps, fist clenched and cocked back ready to punch. But looking at his smug fucking face, Broen stopped short. Glaring Fredrick down, he was shaking. Angry beyond belief. But for once in his life, he was thinking about somebody else. Jude. Zora. The rest of the Defiant. He relaxed a bit.

"Alright then. Why don't you shout it from the rooftops. 'I'm Gallant. The greatest hero in Halcyon City. I burned my son with cigars. Starved him. Beat him. Dragged him up stairs by his hair. From the time he was seven until I kicked him out at the age of sixteen. All because he didn't want to be a superhero.' Try that out and let's see what they say."

He let it come. He let the first come because the moment he touched him, that would be that. If Godfrey assaulted him, there was no way he'd have even a shred of credibility left. Truthfully, he wanted it to happen, because it would so easily get rid of all of his problems in one quick go.

No such luck. He'd apparently learned to control his temper. Fortunate for him, less fortunate for Frederick.

"Things were different back then," Frederick said. "What I did back then is not necessarily what I would do now. You were not an easy child. You were difficult, you made everything a problem, and you would never listen a single thing you were told."

And then some.

"And you chose to leave at sixteen. Because you couldn't take the pressure of being the next Gallant."

"That's horseshit and you know it. You're lying to yourself because the alternative is that out of all the ideological sociopaths out there, you're among the worst."

"I'm done arguing this with you. You think you know everything but you're clueless. Look up Woodland Imports sometime. Learn a little. I never wanted to be a hero. That doesn't mean I don't know how. I just didn't feel like carving parts of myself off to satisfy an ungrateful city."

Broen stopped, his breath ragged. He just wanted to hit him. Beat him down and smash his perfect teeth in. Make him feel every ounce of agony he'd ever inflicted on Broen. But he couldn't. Not now. Not like this. His powers were back. The space around him shimmered like rippling water, and for the first time since he'd gotten the new power from Benedict, Broen was able to enter his pocket dimension. He vanished from sight and reappeared some hundred feet away.

Broen was shocked, his anger forgotten for a moment. He cracked a grin and flexed his fingers, his old habit. And then he vanished again. He needed to be alone. Get high. Get drunk. And fight something.
