He knew it was him. For a while, he'd assumed it was one of the Genovese--either Angelo or Basilio--but neither had quite made sense. Basilio didn't operate like that, and Angelo... well, Angelo was supposed to be a goody two shoes, the kind of person who'd never think about leaving threatening notes on the bulletin board.

So who?

His son, apparently. Godfrey Crawford, back from the dead. Godfrey had been, bar none, the biggest mistake in his life, and now he was back. Frederick wasn't sure how things were going to go down, but the stack of vaguely threatening notes in his bag didn't exactly inspire confidence.

He was waiting not far from the center, waiting to see if he was going to show up. Godfrey always seemed to know when he'd taken the signs down and left the center, so it was just a matter of waiting for him to show up.

Broen had gotten the text about twenty minutes before. The sign was down. Before all this god stuff happening, getting from campus to the center in a timely manner wasn't an option. But with that little kid making the path to and from the academy so short, be could stay in his dorm until he needed to go.

Fredrick was taking the signs down. It made sense. He didn't want to risk people questioning him. Even the implication of wrongdoing would tarnish his perfect reputation. So Broen just had to make sure he kept putting the signs up. Keep him on his toes. Keep him paranoid. Because that would be the thing to make him slip up. Show his true colors.

Approaching the center, Broen almost wouldn't look like himself to Fredrick. His hair pulled back. Dressed nice. No thug life hoodie or baggy pants. He had a flour dusted apron hanging off his chest. He'd been working on a roux for a dish he was making for class. And now that he had time to let it sit and the flavors to mingle, vhe was back to his new favorute hobby. Fucking either his fsther's head.

He almost didn't recognize him. If he hadn't been looking for him specifically, he wouldn't have noticed at all. For all he knew, he'd walked by him several times and simply failed to notice.

But right then he was aware. He was looking for him. And looking for him, he was easy enough to spot. The same hair. Pulled back rather than hanging in his eyes like some kind of hooligan, but the same face. The same look.

Godfrey.

Frederick cracked his neck, taking a deep breath as he planned his strategy. Truthfully, there wasn't much of one. He had a few ideas. A few backup plans. His powers would guard him from the worst of Godfrey's abilities, and he all but started with that - simply turning Godfrey's abilities off at the same moment he stepped out, calling out.

"Godfrey!"

He wasn't going to do it in the center, but he wasn't going to lure him too far away wither. The center had cameras, and it was going to catch every minute - although not the actual conversation.

"Godfrey!"

The name made him want to fucking heave, so much so he didn't even register the voice that said it at first.

"Bitch what!?" Broen turned around, pulling a handful of pennies out of his pocket and tossing them where they hung in the air, spinning wildly in place in a wide cluster.

He spun to face the voice in the same motion and felt his heart stop for a full second. His mouth dried out and he pulled his lips back in a snarl. The pennies dropped and the snarl got wider. Of course the asshole would turn off his powers.

"Oh look who it is. The shining shithead of Halcyon himself. Don't even have the decency to die a fuckin' hero."

Ah yes, the prodigal son. Of course it was him, because who else would respond to his name with bitch what?

Godfrey. Of course Godfrey would. He was as wild and angry as ever, jumping to violence at the first opportunity.

"There was more to be gained in organizing an evacuation and saving those that I could. Once it became obvious that my powers were useless against Phokrus, what did you expect me to do, commit suicide by hopping uselessly into it's mouth?"

Frederick didn't even look particularly mad. Just annoyed, and maybe a bit bored. Godfrey wasn't significant threat to him. This was just a talk.

"Imagine my surprise when I found out you'd survived. I thought you died when you destroyed most of the atmosphere above the city."

"I'd have preferred it, yeah. And think of what it would've done for your fucking rep. Gallant. How brave. How bold. Fscing down an insurmountable enemy for the sake of the world."

Broen spit on the ground and took a step forward. Shoulders squared. Ready to trade blows if it came to it. He also had his piece on him, which was more than he figured Fredrick could say.

"I don't have to justify myself to you. Now what the fuck do you want, that you decided to crawl out of your slimy fucking shithole to come bother me?"

"And no one would have lived to even know about it. You can't have morale without people, Godfrey."

He'd never really got that, did he? He'd never really understood what it meant. He thought it was all just show and bravado. But Gallant meant something to the people of Halcyon city. Gallant was a hero. Gallant was a beacon of hope.

"You're the one leaving notes on the board," Frederick said. It wasn't a question. He knew it was him. "What exactly are you hoping to achieve?"

How had Godfrey ended up so coarse.

"I am. Because I want to make sure that everyone knows exactly what kind of a lying piece of shit you are."

Broen shifted his weight, keeping distance from Fredrick. He was ready to bolt at a second's notice, his old instincts kicking up. But this wasn't like back in Halcyon. For once Broen had support. Broen had the homefield advantage. Nobody knew Gallant here. Not really.

No one did, and Frederick was horribly aware of that. Not that Godfrey had friends, but that he was surrounded by strangers who didn't know about him. He had a thousand or so people from Halcyon city who knew who Gallant was, but many of those would be leaving. If he wanted to have any chance, he was going to have to establish himself.

"All you're doing is making trouble for yourself," Frederick pointed out. "Do you think the island wouldn't be bothered by this sort of thing? The only reason I haven't brought it up is because I'm trying not to make the evacuees look disorganized."

He paused, letting out an exasperated sigh as he folded his arms over his chest.

"This is a new place, and it's time for a new start. You obviously don't want to be associated with me, so lets leave it at that. You leave me alone, I'll leave you alone. You can just be the..." Frederick crinkled his nose with obvious distaste. "The former villain Paragon. No relation to me. And I'll just be Gallant, no relation to you. Which is what you wanted, isn't it?"

Broen's expression dropped, not sad but less angry. This was soon replaced with a smirk. Then a wide, toothy grin. "No."

"I never wanted to be left alone. Not after everything you did." He took a step forward, putting his hand to the back of his neck. "You burned me, asshole. So I'm gonna burn you back. But not with fire. I'm going to drag you the fuck down and make sure everyone knows what you really are."
