Moonlight glittered off cinnamon fur as a breeze ruffled thick, tall blades of winter grass. A vast meadow stretched behind her, and before her loomed grand trees, the likes of which she'd seen only in her woodland's thickest groves. It was nearly silent, aside from the howling around her, the howling within her. She'd scarcely felt so alive.

Flicker dashed through the fields, her great wolf paws beating rhythmically across the ground. She didn't feel their touch, though. Instead, she sped across the ground as though her feet never touched it at all, as though the moonlight had given her wings with her paws and she floated along with the wind. Soft fur, from cinnamon to cream, swirled over her canine body and glowed beneath the stars — the same ones from her homeland, if perhaps in different places. The same sky, the same wind, the same light, though she knew she was no longer on earth at all. Whether the sky was real or fake, for a moment, she did not care. It made her feel alive. It made her feel at home. That was all she needed to howl.

And so she did, as she gazed up at the nigh-full moon high above.

Moment later, she plunged into the tree-line, dodging roots and pits with practiced ease. Every now and again, another howl would break loose. Listen closely and it sounded perchance like laughter, or mourning, or song.

Eliana was out for a stroll under a gibbon moon. Unlike the night before, she was not hunting tonight. She padded through the grass, heading to the forest nearby with the moon shining off her dark silver-gray pelt. The air was fresh, crisp, and cold, and the sky above was clear and filled with stars. But she did not seem to sense any of this. Her silver-blue eyes looked forward, but not seeing as she traveled on autopilot, avoiding any obstacles.

Her mind was elsewhere. Ever since her friend returned from the otherworld, she has been different damaged somehow. Eliana offered to replace her missing arm, but she refused. No, it was something more profound.

She was so deep in thought she missed the wolf call., but eventually, they got through. She was at the edge of the forest when she finally heard the call. Heading into the woods, she perked her ears and sniffed the air trying to locate the other wolf. Regrettable, with all the trees, it was hard finding the scent or sound. Every so often, as she followed as best she could, she bayed at the moon, hoping the other would hear. She could not sense another pack in the area, which puzzled her. Was this another loan wolf, like herself?

The faintest sound of a howl broke through the rushing of the wind and the blood in her ears. For a moment, she felt blind hope. Flicker slowed to a stop and listened, sniffing the air for familiar scents. Her parents, her brother, her niece, her cousins-- her kin. But it was in vain, for her parents were gone, and her people were thousands of miles and a dimensional boundary away.

But there was someone in these woods, and they spoke to Flicker in familiar words. They answered her longing howl with their own, and forever cemented their momentary link beneath moonlight.

The scent of another finally hit her bark-brown nose, and she set off again, swift as the wind, a hopeful sound ringing from her throat. Moonlight dappled her fur through shifting treetops as she called, running ever-faster in the direction of her kin.

With all the creatures she as met, Eliana was not about to run into the unknown. Something she had done before and got into trouble. So, Eliana loped forward with her black nose flaring a bit with every sniff and her ears searching for any sounds. She was beginning to regret using that particular hair-dye. Even after a month, its scent was strong enough to overpower some of the fainter scents. With her, one should smell a strong wolf scent with an underlying of human and, maybe, a wee bit of alcohol.

They were getting closer. Enough that the other scents were getting through the hair dye's. What Eliana was smelling caused her to wonder who or what she was. There was the female wolf scent, but there were an underlying earthy aroma and several other animals. At first, she dismissed the different scents as belonging to others. Now she suspected they were from the same being. What her imagination conjured up was - interesting.

She reached a small clearing to see a cinnamon-cream furred wolf entering from the other side. Although a little disappointed, it was not what her imagination conjured up. She was curious who could produce such an assortment of scents. She did notice the shifter token the other was wearing (which did explain a lot).

Yipping to attract the other's attention, she raised her paw to show hers.

The stranger's scent grew stronger and stronger as Flicker all but floated through the trees. At some point, she fell silent, for her kin was close enough that she need not speak out any longer. With time, it became clear that the other was, indeed, not selkie; she smelled of wolves and humans, but lacked the poignant sent of the woodland itself so characteristic of Flicker's people. She lacked the chatter of mice and squirrels, the roar of a bear, the bleat of a mountain goat, the whine of a fox. But where her scent was linear, it also was strong, and it was clear that her wolf scent was half of her entire being, whereas the selkie scent was more divided due to variety.

Flicker knew she was close as she approached another clearing, this one much smaller. She-wolf, her nose supplied, as her primal instinct pulled her closer and closer towards her power-kin. She emerged, slowly, from the trees, and saw her silver sister from afar.

The selkie returned the yip, and held up her own paw, a shifter tag looped snugly around her lower leg. With that, the proceeded slowly towards the other, moving cautiously despite perked ears and a gently wagging tail.

Eliana joined her near the middle of the clearing, where the moon was the brightest to take a better look and sniff. She had the coat of a timberwolf. Leaning forward with her black nose, she took a sniff. All those scents were coming from the other.

Still, Eliana was puzzled by the scents. The other was not a werewolf nor just a plain ordinary wolf. Quite frankly, Eliana did not know what she was. She had met all sorts of different shifters in her lifetime, but none quite as complex or interesting as this one.

She sat back on her haunches with a bemused, puzzled, and curious look on her face. Although not panting yet, she was thirsty and licked her lips, asking if the other was also.

Although Eliana liked the wolf form, it had its limitation, especially when trying to communicate. Eventually, she would have to shift to her human form and hoped the other could as well. She was not ready for that yet as she had somemore romping to do and she was not sure what Naisis got her in shifter-friendly clothing. With Naisis's wicked sense of humor it could be anything, and Eliana did say anything. Right now all it was, was a gray choker.

One thing the other might notice was the black covering the top of Eliana's head and the scent of hair dye.

Flicker breathed in deeply, seeking the peculiarities of the other's scent. As she other she-wolf sat, Flicker continued to approach, slowly but confidently. The scent of chemicals caught her nose, further identifying this she-wolf as a shifter, though the washed-out scent of humanity that clung to her pelt would have been enough even prior. Finally, she sat down in front of the other, only a few tail-lengths away. The other's bemusement was not lost on her, but there was no way to ask about it yet.

However, at the prompting, Flicker, too, licked her lips, showing her thirst, and looked off into the woods for a moment. She then looked back, flickered her ears, and tilted her head with a small swish of her tail against the snowy underbrush below. There was a lake that way, off in the trees — would this she-wolf want to come?

Eliana knew of the lake. It was one of her favorite hunting grounds. She also knew of a spring nearby that feed the meadow. She might show the newcomer where it was later.

She stood up, shaking off a little snow, and looked off in the direction of the lake with her ears perked forward and her tail wagging slowly. She glanced over to the other, then back to the lake.

She was about to make an all too human gesture but decided it would not be appropriate here.

Although it was a full moon, she was reasonably immune to its effect after all this time and all the other full moons, but it still bothered her.

There were all sorts of scents here, scents of deer, humans, rabbits, and one were-rabbit she knew of. She just hoped he would not do anything stupid, but knowing how much he liked the females, she could not count on it.
