Oh no. The conversation was coming to a halt and she was running out of things to say. "That's cool." She turned to look at her crossword puzzle, trying desperately to think of anything to ask him. Oh, well, duh. His name was the obvious thing to find out.

She moved much more jerkily than she had intended, and she accidentally knocked over her coffee cup. There had been about half left and it spilled across the table. "Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry." She said, scrambling to grab a handful of napkins from the dispenser.

Maddie had just about opened his mouth to ask what her name was when she spilled her drink. Immediately, he sprung into action. He reacted for the napkins right when she did, and their hands touched. Glancing at her quickly, he pulled his hand slightly away, Maddie waited for her to get some before he grabbed more.

"Not your fault," he said calmly, pressing the napkins onto the tabletop to soak the coffee up. The waitress came over and shook her head at Sadie. "Being clumsy again?" She teased. Maddie suppressed a laugh, but a grin peeked through.

Now Sadie was totally unnerved, but she forced herself to laugh when the waitress teased her about being clumsy. "Aren't I always?" She wasn't, always, but she she didn't know what else to say. She took the towel and began drying up the warm liquid.

"Nope," the lady quipped back. She took the towels and empty mug. "I'll get you a new drink." And she headed off.

Maddie sat back in his chair, grinning. He teased, "Nicely done. You embarrass yourself and make me pay for another drink all in the space of two minutes." He gave a mock applause.

Sadie was about to tell the waitress not to bother, but she'd already left. Blushing as the man clapped, she turned to him. "I can pay you back," She said quickly, reaching for her purse to pull out money. She now felt even worse than she had before, and she wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.

Maddie shook his head. "No, no, you're fine." He waved his hand at her, wanting her to put her money away.

Knowing he was making her embarrassed, and knew if he didn't leave her alone then she probably wouldn't leave a happy camper, Maddie finally stood and smiled down at her. "Well, I'll leave you be for now," he said, putting emphasis on the last two words.

Going to the bar counter, he waited for the waitress to finish making the new drink before he held out his hand for it. "I'll deliver it to her for you." The mug wa placed in his palm, but he set it down on the counter. "How much is on my tab?"

"Well, you had one drink, and she had three--well, four counting this one. So it'll be $18.25," she answered.

Slightly shocked at the price, Maddie glanced up at the chalk board showing the prices. His double latte had been 3.25, and each of her mocha lattes was 3.75. Well, she is worth it, so it's okay. He took the correct amount out of his wallet and then grabbed the drink.

Walking back over to her table, Maddie bowed low and grinned. "Your drink, madam." He set it on the tabletop before continuing, "It was a pleasure talking to you. Have a nice night." He headed over to grab his guitar and then slid out a back door.

He had gone so quickly, returned so quickly, and left again so quickly, that Sadie had no time to say anything to him. She went over to the counter, still feeling awkward that he had payed for it all. She handed the girl a five dollar bill, not sure how much her drinks had been. "Could you please put this as credit on his tab?" She asked, and of course the waitress knew what she meant.

Sadie smiled and left, and it took until she was half way to the school to realize that she hadn't even found out his name.
