Angelo knew the conversation wasn't going to go well. He knew it, and he was sure Broen knew it.

Technically speaking, Angelo was simply lounging around on the couch, watching the TV and waiting for Broen to show up. But it was hard not to feel anxious. Hard not to freak the hell out.

It wasn't going to go well. He had Fairy Gone already queued up, but he felt like he was kidding himself by pretending they were ever going to watch it.

Broen was absolutely not looking forward to this. He wasn't an idiot by any means. He could put two and two together. Talking in private meant that the topic wasn't going to make him happy. And given what they had been talking about at the time...

Broen flicked the remnants of his cigarette away, sitting on the ethereal couch in his pocket dimension. He had been sitting here for who could even tell how long. He sighed and checked his phone. He was supposed to meet Angelo.

The entire world shifted, the universe moving around him to move him from his dorm to Angelo's front door. He stood up, shifting back into the real universe. He knocked three times on the door before shoving his hands in his pockets, looking more sullen than he usually did.

Truthfully? Angelo was kind of surprised Broen had knocked. He's sort of expected him to yell 'I'm coming in' and then appear inside, because Broen wasn't great with personal spaces and shit like that.

Plus, realistically speaking? He'd be allowed in nine times out of ten anyway, and he already knew Angelo was home.

Basilio wasn't. He was at work, which was a conscious, active choice by Angelo. Broen was probably going to yell. He was going to be angry. And he felt like Basilio judged his choice in friends enough without him seeing Broen at his worst.

He pulled the door open in one swift movement, waving him in.

"I already have Fairy Gone ready, if you want it." If he wanted to drag it out.

Broen hated the formality. But if he heard it right now he was pretty sure he would break his hand on the wall. So better to do something fun first and let himself ease into it. He breezed past Angelo, giving him a twitch of a smile as he did. "Hey, yeah. We can watch it." As he moved through the house, he could tell from the quiet and Angelo's demeanor that Basilio was out. Probably for the best. He didn't need him breathing down his neck right then.

"So is there food or were you expecting me to cook?" He almost hoped for the latter. It'd give him something productive to do with his hands, at least.

He'd tried to think it through. To think about what Broen would want. What he'd need.

"I have leftovers in the fridge from work," Angelo said, making no secrets about the fact that the majority of his meals were from there, "or there's some ingredients in the fridge if you want to cook. I'm certainly not going to turn down your cooking." No, he'd like it, even if he just wanted to give Broen the option. The way he saw it, the more options Broen had, the more at ease he'd be. Reminding him he was the master of his own destiny, and all that. Making his own decisions.

He flipped on the show, letting Broen choose what he wanted to do as he curled up on the couch, his legs tucked up under him. The TV was fully visible from the kitchen, so it wasn't as if that was a concern.

Broen was in the kitchen, checking this leftovers and deciding against them. He got enough Italian food at work and he honestly just wanted something simple and greasy. Easy. Comfy.

So he set to work cooking something like a grilled cheese panini with some pickles on the side just to have something different. He vanished and reappeared back on the couch, sitting as far from Angelo as physically possible. He ate and tried to watch the episode, but couldn't. With half the sandwich eaten, he slid the other half over to Angelo with a sigh.

"I hate this shit. Fucking pretendingike we aren't both waiting for the bomb to go off. We might as well just get it the fuck over with."

Even if Angelo had put up the pretense--even if he'd gotten the show ready to go and set the whole thing up--he knew it wasn't going to last. Broen hated beating around the bush. He hated pretending. So he'd given him the option, but the moment he took the sandwich--setting it to the side for a moment without eating at all--Angelo knew how things were going to go.

"Manta Carlos only has a small prison," he said after a moment. "They don't lock people up and throw away the key. He got six months, and then he'll have months of probation and probably house arrest after that. He'll be out in three weeks."

Three weeks.

"The seventh."

It seemed too soon.

Broen inhaled slowly, his lungs filling with that burning sensation he always felt when he thought about Freddie too hard. Like choking on a fistful of lit cigars. Three weeks. That was too soon. It wasn't enough. Why was it so goddamn fucking unfair?

"YEARS!"

The shout was sudden and violent, punctuated by Broen standing up suddenly. Sending the plate and the sandwich clattering to the floor. He lunged at the TV, throwing himself at it and plunging into his pocket dimension the second before impact. In his universe, he smashed into that same TV head on, shattering the screen and putting it and himself through the drywall.

The next second the world was flying around him, shifting and changing to move him from one place to another. The Islets. He wanted to see his smug fucking face. But there was a wall. Some invisible force around the correction facility that Broen bounced off of like a cheap rubber ball.

Bounced so hard he landed back on the couch, his lip already bruising from where the edge of the pocket dimension TV had hit him. "Years of goddamn torture! He ruined my fucking face! He blinded me! And he gets six fucking months! Cocksucking cowards! Every fucking one of them!"

He'd expected the anger, but there was only so much you could brace for it. only so much you could prepare for it. Angelo jerked back when Broen yelled, both to give him space and to get out of the blast zone. Should he have texted his dad? Should he have warned him something might have been smashed? He hadn't wanted to, in case he was wrong. But as Broen lunged toward the TV, he imagined explaining it to Basilio, imagined the look, the thought of him judging Angelo's choices in friends again, and then-

And then Broen was gone. The TV was intact, and Angelo felt a surge of panic. This was what he hadn't wanted. He'd wanted Broen in private so he could yell it out and punch pillows or whatever the hell, but not being out there. Not doing something stupid. He was on his feet, frantically looking around, and he'd managed to call Broen's name once--not very loud, afraid of bothering the neighbors more than he already had--before Broen was suddenly there, back on the couch, looking like he'd just lost a fight with a wall.

"Broen!" Angelo said again, taking a step forward before stoping himself. Don't crowd him. Let him be angry. He had every right to be.

"You're right. You're right and it's wrong, but he's never going to touch you again, never going to bother you again. There - there'd be a restriction on his release. That he can't go near you. So he's gone. He's out of your life."

"Fuck that," Broen snapped, standing back up and tugging at his hair to get it out of his eyes. "That's not enough, Boyscout. I have reached the point where I am done. When I say done, I mean fucking. Done. Done being someone else's punching bag. Done not making motherfuckers hurt as bad as they hurt me."

"I need to kick someone's teeth in, Angelo. Like, not just right now specifically but... in general. I realized after I dealt with that loan shark guy that was hassling Zora. I can't handle a normal life. I can't... I can't uh... I'm like one of those crazy vets. The ones who come home and can't reintegrate into civilian life. I need to fight."
