"I don't," Angelo confirmed. "For the most part, I'm baseline human. The only above average part is my brain, and that's not going to help me do anything but think them out of the tube."

It didn't take much thinking to figure out how to get them open, and he stepped over to the system with Blade, not answering immediately. The entire system seemed like it had been designed to be clear and easy to follow. Everything seemed so simple, and he wondered if that was because this was the end system - the one intended to be used by an average person. A soldier, maybe? Not a scientist, either way.

"Hit it," he said after a moment.

Apri was still giving Reyma directions when Blade pressed the button. There was a sharp hissing sound that forced a break in Apri's explanation, but she continued on as if nothing had happened. The tops of the tanks had slid from their places, exposing the insides of the tanks to the air.

Reyma had flown in her dragon form, since it provided more speed, but walked into the building in her human form. She approached Apri as soon as she reached the basement.

"Where is your pod?" she asked.

"I left it upstairs, since I didn't know what would be down here," Apri said. "Anyway, these are my clients, Angelo and Blade. Angelo's the blonde one."

Reyma introduced herself to them—very curt and quiet, compared to how she spoke to Apri—and she wasted no time in perching herself on top of the tanks and grabbing the people inside. Apri suddenly realized that she didn't know what the liquid inside the tanks were, but was relieved when Reyma's arms were unscathed.

Apri approached Angelo and Blade. "Reyma is kind of an amateur at the whole human interaction thing," she said quietly, "so please don't think she's rude, or anything."

Angelo had already known who Reyma was before they were even introduced. The same sense that told him who the two in the tubes had been cloned from told him that they were Reyma Orillee, a dragon. He knew what they could and couldn't do.

But he wasn't willing to explain that. Not right then. Because if he said it, Blade might ask what about them? And then he'd have to... what, lie? Would he lie to her? No, he'd probably just dodge the question.

He didn't want to have that conversation with her. For all hew knew the clones wouldn't be viable. They'd die.

"Here," Angelo said, digging into his bag and pulling out two more masks, replicas of the ones he and Blade had been wearing. Leave it to Armourer to leave backups, but then he also hadn't been sure which members of the Defiant were going with him.

He carefully fit the masks on the two sleeping figures and glanced back to Blade.

"If this were a movie, I'd say we should try and get the data, but... I'm not a hacker, and the data was probably stored off site anyway." Maybe less was more in this case.

"We - I had plans to go see if we could make it to the tower. Leave a... I have a little memorial. I was going to leave it there, but that might be stretching things. I can just - I'll leave it at the fountain by where we opened the portal."

Or where he thought the fountain had been. It wasn't even there anymore.

Apri gasped, and then sighed in relief when Angelo pulled out the masks from his bag. She had completely forgotten that the tank people didn't have anything to breathe with. She only just barely remembered to tell Reyma to bring one. It was a small bubble over her mouth that was only really visible if you looked hard enough. They had used it for space travel before.

"I can't say I'm too good with hacking or anything like that," Apri said. "Dimensional science is more my speed. However...."

The detour had taken them ten minutes, and waiting for Reyma to get there had taken them four. That left them with twenty-eight. Apri did some mental math, factoring in distance and speed.

They would be cutting it close with this.

"No," Apri said. "We can still make it to the tower. Once we get there, it'll be a straight shot to the portal. We'll be cutting it close, but we'll make it with a little time to spare. However, we'll have to fly instead of run this time."

Reyma was already out the door, and Apri was behind her. Reyma deposited the tank people onto Shima's back, moved a good distance away, and began her transformation right away. When she was done, she lowered her nose so that everyone could get on. When Apri was safely on, she would get out of the pod and make sure the tank people were secure. She turned to her clients.

"Hop on!" she said. "Don't worry. Reyma's a very stable flier."

Flying through Halcyon on the back of a dragon felt... unreal. Out of place. Halcyon wasn't a place with dragons. It wasn't a place where you just soared through the sky. It felt strange and wrong and off.

Angelo spent the duration of the trip double checking the two limp bodies. He kept second guessing himself, worrying the masks were going to slip off, but both seemed firmly in place.

The sight of the tower felt like a rock in his gut. It was gone. Almost down to nothing. It was only really notable for being an extra large pile of rubble, and he pointed a mostly empty spot out for them to land.

He wasn't sure if he wanted to stay out. The letter in his pocket felt like it was burning a hole. He'd thought about reading it, but now he just wanted to leave it. Put the statue down. Put the letter down.

Put Halcyon behind them.

Apri followed Angelo's direction, and in turn patted various of Reyma's scales in the corresponding direction. It was a system that she and Reyma had perfected to be able to communicate direction without the roar of the wind restricting them. She placed all her fingers on the scale directly in front of her and Reyma descended.

When they landed, Apri let Angelo do his thing. She stroked Reyma's scales. It had taken them five minutes to get there, after flying over it once. They had plenty of time to spare.

Plenty of time to spare, and yet Angelo still felt like time was running down, moment by moment. Every second they were there felt like a weight.

He wanted to be home already. He kept sneaking glances at the two still bodies. Clones. Clones of Breakneck. He'd come to Halcyon to say goodbye, and instead he'd just accidentally bolted the door open.

Once they'd landed, Angelo slid off their new escort, digging into his jacket to pull out the letter. He wasn't going to read it--that had never been the plan--but instead he stepped up to the base of the tower, setting it down.

For Breakneck. But more importantly...

He reached into his pocket dimension, his hand vanishing for just a moment, and produced a small statue. It was about a foot tall, only just squeezing out of his pocket dimension, and Blade alone would recognize the design: A replica of the statue of Flying Freedom that had once been such a landmark in the city. It was made of glass, and Angelo wondered how long it would last.

He set it down atop the letter, pinning the letter in place.

"We're done," Angelo said, glancing over his shoulder. "We should just... should go home."

Home. Back to Manta Carlos. That was home now.

Apri acted like she wasn't looking, her head facing away at just the angle for her to be able to peek at Angelo from the corner of her eye. Reyma just stared right at him. They both saw him place the letter and produce the small statue from seemingly nowhere, and they both decided not to ask.

Once Angelo was back on Reyma, Apri ordered her to lift off and began directing her once more. She wasn't confident that she would be able to find the portal without Shima's tracking. However, her worry was misplaced, as she spotted the portal in short time. Reyma set down, and once everyone was off, she transformed back into a human.
