Brynjar didn't know why it felt so hard for him to open the doors to the library. The large double doors loomed before him and though it had been 20 years Brynjar could still remember there was a small bruise on the wood by the left handle. He never found out what caused it, even though it somehow bothered him.. Surely someone in the staff would know. 20 years ago Brynjar couldn't have asked. But now he could.
It wasn't entirely true that Brynjar didn't know, why it was so hard for him to open the doors. He had just gotten back to the island after two decades, and he had returned a changed man. But the old him, the him thag had just gotten freedom for the first time in his life and was terrified of that, was still behind these doors. The ghost of Brynjar, weaker in both mind and body, still sat by those tables, still looked through the shelves of books. And the Brynjar now was afraid, that when he opened these doors the old him would come bck, and take him over. Simply a foolish thought. But such was Brynjar's psyche, and his fear uncontrollable.
But not unconquerable.

Brynjar took a breath and opened the doors, partly because he was getting bit embarrassed by just standing in front of them. And as he opened the doors a familiar scent greeted him, the scent of ink, old and new books and wood. A slight smile rose to Brynjar's face as he carefully closed the door behind him and simply took in the library, the high ceiling and rows of bookshelves and tables. There were some students reading by the tables, they looked like college students. Brynjar imagined couple of weeks from now they would see him again, and maybe nod or even say hello. In anh case, they would recognize Brynjar. He would have a place here. That thought was comforting, and made the small, constant loneliness in Brynjar's chest shrink away slightly. But it never went completely away.
As said students closest to the doors turned to briefly glance at the newcomer Brynjar nearly flinched, but not in the same way he had 20 years ago. This time Brynjar wasn't aftaid of everything. He sent a small nod to the ones looking and went on his way. Brynjar could feel some gazes follow him and he didn't blame them. Unfortunately Brynjar was slightly eye-catching with his tall, wide stature.

Brynjar slipped in between the shelves with crime mystery novels, remembering more and more things as he proceeded. How he once his behind that shelf for almost an hour just to avoid someone who barely knew him, how he once got so lost into his thoughts by that window he accidentally slipped out of his body. Well, Brynjar still did the latter now and then. He hadn't still gotten full control of his astral projection.
Brynjar arrived at his old spot, where he used to stand for hours on end, just reading bits and pieces here and there. Brynjar was pleasantly surprised by the very much grown selection of books, many which he had not read yet. Brynjar gently slipped one out of the shelf, skimmed through first few pages and deemed it to seem interesting enough to try out. Brynjar, instead of standing between the shelves, took the book with him and sat by an open window, where a gentle breeze blew in. Gentle enough so it wouldn't bother the reading. Brynjar sat down and turned to look outside for a moment. Though some large clouds could be seen on the sky and horizon it was a warm day, and Brynjar had really felt it as he was sensitive to heat. But the breeze and cooler air inside the library made him feel just cozy enough in his comfortable, clearly much worn loose jeans and white t-shirt. Some faint scars could be discerned on his biceps but the worst ones were covered by his shirt. Brynjar pulled out his reading glasses from his shoulder bag and started reading the book, hoping it had a well executed romantic subplot.

Humming very softly to himself as he normally liked to do, Noel strolled through the library shelves looking for a book or two that he could use in his mythology class. He knew there were a few that weren't terribly inaccurate but couldn't quite remember the names of the authors. Dresses in his usual well-cut tailor suit with pocket watch included, Noel wandered through the book aisles lost in thought.

And as he turned a corner, he saw at the end of the aisle near a window a vaguely familiar figure. Not sure it was who he thought it was, Noel walked slowly and soundlessly towards the reading figure, and as he neared the very handsome, well-built man reading what appeared to be a romance novel, he felt a pleasant shock of instant recognition. It was Brynjar...

"Crime and mystery? I thought you'd be reading something lighter..." Noel remarked with a welcoming grin as he looked down at Brynjar with a twinkle in his eye. Very happy to see his old friend and acquaintance again after so very many years. Noel hadn't actually expected to ever see Brynjar again when he left the island so long ago, and so it was an unexpected, but pleasant shock seeing him here.

Brymjar, in his normal manner, had drifted away while reading, getting sucked into the world of the book. He read slowly and carefully took in every word, wanted to understand the smallest details.
Thus he did not notice someone approaching, and when that someone spoke with a familiar voice it took Brynjar a second to lift his gaze, blinking a couple of times. And he saw a familiar face. Brynjar quickly stood up, his expression slightly shocked and surprised. Inside he was much more than slightly so, and in addition happy. And embarrassed, since the man had pointed out his book choice.
"Mr. Sinterklaas, it has been a long time. How are you?"
Brynjar noted, while in his full stature, that the kind god seemed much shorter than 20 years ago. It somehow made Brynjar feel odd.
Brynjar marked the page he was on with a handkerchief he always carried with his and closed the book, gesturing Noel to sit.
"If you have time I would like to talk to you. But pay me no heed if you must go."
Brynjar still remained standing, and he would not sit back down until Noel sat or left.

"Please Brynjar, call me Noel..." he said kindly, gesturing for him to remain seated and not stand up on his account. When the younger man stood anyways, Noel noticed that he seemed somewhat taller, but not as if he had grown, it was an air or something about him, he seemed... more confident, perhaps. "Mr. Sinterklass is for my students and their parents, and you, my friend, are neither," Noel stated with a warm smile.

When Brynjar asked him if he might have a word with him, Noel nodded, "But of course, I always have time for an old friend," he stated, taking a seat across from where the handsome big bear of a man was standing, having forgotten how polite and soft spoken he could be. Then, looking up at Brynjar, Noel gestured that he should sit too. "Come, tell me now.... how are you?" he inquired with kindness, truly interested in knowing how he was doing after all this time away from Manta Carlos.

Brynjar didn't know why, but he had been afraid Noel would've forgotten him. So when the man called out his name Brynjr felt a small wave of relief wash over him. Brynjar still felt his presence in this world was fleeting, and it was comforting to know there were people who were willing to remember his name.
"I will try, Mr.-...Noel."
Brynjar tried to answer Noel's smile within his capabilities, but his smile was subtle, and although warm it was shadowed by melancholy.

As Noel sat down so did Brynjar, and he nodded at the man opposite to him, grateful. And again, slightly happy as Noel called Brynjar his friend. The godmwas just as kind as Brynjar remembered him, that was comforting as well.
"Thank you. I've been better, at least since the last time we saw each other."
Brynjar rubbed his neck a bit and shifted in his chair, looking for the right words in his mind. He spared a quick glance at a bird that flew past the open window, it calmed Brynjar down and he looked Noel in the eyes.
"I want to thank you, for what you did for me 20 years ago. For encouraging me, for being kind to me. You are, well, in the simplest terms, my saviour. I'm in your debt. So, thank you very much, Noel."
Brynjar bowed his head low in gratitude, so his neck long hair almost touched the table.

Watching Brynjar quietly, Noel adjusted his posture slightly, leaning very slightly towards him, noting the hint of wistfulness still in him. This inherent note of melancholy and sorrow that he carried about him, and that Noel guessed would always be part of him, this kind-hearted soul, tugged at Noel's heart. He knew Brynjar's past and how he had been treated, mistreated, and Noel knew that a lesser man might have gone crazy or continued on a path of destruction, but Brynjar hadn't.

Instead, he was here before Noel today. He seemed better, less agitated and more put together, even more handsome- if that were possible, and very surprisingly, thanking Noel for what he had done. Shaking his head, Noel, while very touched and grateful for his words, felt that he had no right to them either.

"No, Brynjar... I am not your saviour, I did nothing more than the next caring individual might, I just listened, and offered a few words of advice, perhaps..." here he smiled warmly at Brynjar.

"Don't thank me, you made the important decision to go out there, live, and try to become whole again." he said gently, "You've no need to thank me, thanks enough is seeing you here before me a better Brynjar." he replied very honestly as he took in Brynjar's handsome face and felt again that tug at his heartstrings just wishing that there were a way that Noel could somehow make him truly happy. He deserved it more than most in his opinion.

It was strange, when Noel smiled warmly at him. Brynjar felt like it made the loneliness in his chest pull back, and not just slightly. It was like the warmth from the smile itself seeped into him. Brynjar was confused that sensation, but he put it aside for now as he listened to Noel's words. It was Brynjar's turn to shake his head slightly and he kept his eyes down, not being able to look Noel in the eyes.
"I...I think I will...never be whole again. I am not certain if I ever was. But you helped me to...to find something again. Something to live for. It was...how do I explain it?"
Brynjar swiped his hand through his hair, struggling to find the right words. He was bad at this, he knew that. He wished he could've just written Noel a letter.
"It wasn't what just any kind person would've done. I'm...I'm not a good person, not truly. Not after...everything I did. But because of what you said I found the courage to try to be...better. It was something I will never be able to pay back."
Brynjar's tone had turned slightly frailer, and his hands were fisted on the table. He was still looking at the table, and though he was pretty sure he wouldn't have a lapse some memories raced through Brynjar's mind. Memories of all he had done. Of all the faces of the innocent people he had killed, of all the houses he had burned, all the comrades he left behind. Brynjar exhaled through his nose, and looked at Noel with a sad and apologetic look.
"Forgive me, that...got too personal."

"No," Noel stopped Brynjar, halting his words of being a bad person and unworthy. "You were made to live through things that no creature - mortal or immortal should ever have to endure," he said gently but firmly.

Brynjar had not told Noel all he had been through, but as a God himself, Noel had inquired after him, interested in knowing what awful things he had endured and had to endure from his Norse gods. And with time, Noel had come to hear of the great werebear general and his open defiance of Thor. All of which had only made Noel respect him more for it. His actions, defiance, had taken him down a personal path of great pain and suffering -especially for one of such a kind soul as his. Thor had been exceptionally cruel to have done what he did to Brynjar and this knowledge had made Noel angry. Thor had acted like a petulant vindictive child, unable to take criticism, and who could not be reasoned with. An embarrassment to Gods in his opinion.

"You were a mortal, tricked into believing the legend and myth of greatness of the gods. You had no idea what you were destined for." Noel told him. "Few mortals do," he added giving him an understanding look.

"You are not to be blamed for your innocence and belief in a greater cause. You had no idea it was just a game gods play and a way for mortals to do their bidding." Noel said. Very glad that his god condition was a benevolent one and that he wanted nothing more than to bring contentment to people.

"And please, don't apologise ...You owe me nothing," Noel said, "Well, maybe happiness, I do want that for you." Noel stated honestly. "You deserve that much, everybody does..." he added patiently, hoping to make Brynjar understand that he was as much as the next person deserving of that.

Brynjar felt unworthy of Noel's words and belief in him. He was so very kind, and Brynjar felt that he was fooling Noel. Brynjar knew of the stories told about him, the bad and the good ones. And most of them were tweaked to either make him sound ungrateful, or more noble than he avtually was. Brynjar didn't know what to think anymore, he just wanted to move on and preferably never see Thor again. But...he knew such thoughts were in vain. Brynjar couldn't just move on from what had happened. All those centuries trapped in ice, unable to die or live, had left a permanent, deep wound. And that wound would take a long time to scar, maybe all the eternity Brynjar now had.
Eternity...
Brynjar shook his head slightly and kept his eyes on Noel, though he wanted to look down. But somehow...Brynjar didn't want to be regress. Not in front of this person.
"Your words and kindness...are wasted on me. I need to somehow pay back for what I did. Being a mortal is not an excuse for my blindness."
Brynjar had a solemn expression, and he turned his eyes to look outside again. Just then a large cloud covered the sun and Brynjar was reminded of Åsgard as he looked how the sun made the grey cloud look like it had golden linings.
"I...have lost my faith in gods, they are not perfect. No one is. But you are the reason I did not let myself hate them. You are a good person, a good god. And I would like to somehow repay you."
In the middle Brynjar turned to look at Noel again and tried smiling slightly, and he sat with his back straight. Brynjat had accepted an eternity of making up for his deeds. Brynjar did not feel guilt for waking up, but he did feel guilty for his slumber. How he had known, deep inside himself, that he had gone down a path that was lined with blood.
And still Brynjar had walked that path for 20 years. And ended up on a path lined with the sacrifices of his comrades.

Noel looked at Brynjar with understanding, and a bit of sadness. Sadness that he felt that it was his fault somehow that Thor had used him and those around them. It was hindsight, Brynjar knew now that he had been doing awful things, but back then, even if he had questioned it at first and gone along with it later, it was not like he had much choice. Once promised to a god, a mortal had little choice but to obey.

"I understand, Brynjar, I honestly do..." Noel replied kindly as he held his ice blue gaze, thinking that it reminded him of blue ice when snow falls and become part of a glacier. "But you needn't repay me. I honestly would not even know what to ask of you," he said truthfully. "In fact, I would feel strange even asking for anything from you. I consider you a good friend and your repayment to me would to be happy, to find that happiness that you think you don't deserve." he declared softly and in a meaningful way.

"You are here, you are eternal and you have forever if you want it, " Noel said, "But you shouldn't live forever making up for the past either. Yes, you did horrible things, but you also suffered much too. I think you've been punished enough." he added very truthfully.

"In fact, that is what you can do to repay me." Noel said with a grin, "I command you to find that which makes you happy and makes you want to love and feel loved..." he stated with a twinkle in his eye, thinking that maybe what this handsome bear of a man needed was a little TLC from somebody who truly cared about him. Somebody who would love him for him.
