Monotonous and uneventful was not quite the way to describe how Zoraida's day had been going. So far it had been a day full of monotonous paperwork, meetings, and phone calls with clients and suppliers. It was far from what one would probably ever call mentally stimulating, even though it kept her so engrossed that two o'clock had rolled around and slipped by without her even noticing that she hadn't stopped for lunch or even a short coffee break.
In fact, it was a little after three-thirty when the company's new office assistant/receptionist, Anne, knocked twice on her office door to remind her that her grandfather and partner, Rafael Del Bosque, had to attend an important investor's meeting in Barcelona, and wouldn't be back until the following Thursday or Friday.
"Oh... Alright, thank you for the reminder," Zoraida said as she put the file down that she was looking over and leaned back tiredly in her chair. "Did Mr. Del Bosque leave any other messages for me?" she asked, wondering if her grandfather had left any instructions for the remainder of the week, or if his assistant, Kalvin, would need her help at all.
"Not really, Mr. Del Bosque left a list of to-dos for Kalvin and for myself, and said that he would call tomorrow afternoon or the day after to check in and see if everything was okay," Anne said as she went over her notes to make sure she had informed Ms. Del Bosque of everything.
"Oh, yes," Anne exclaimed, suddenly remembering something. "There was a package that came for you just as Mr. Del Bosque was leaving," she said as she hurried back out to reception to retrieve the package in question.
"Here it is," Anne stated as she placed the wrapped box on Zoraida's desk.
"Thank you, Anne. I'll let you know if I need anything else,"' Zora said as she sat up and dismissed the young woman, curious now about what was in the box and who sent it.
Opening the box with a pair of scissors, Zora peered inside and gasped when she saw it was what was inside. It was a delicate flower under glass that looked very much like a human skull.
Pushing the box away from her, Zoraida, who felt very weirded out by the gift, opened the note that accompanied it - which quite simply. read
