The student lounge was a veritable hive of activity for the moment. Yuki sat back and watched in silence, a tall bottle of wine in one hand, a half-filled crystal goblet with the base of it designed to look like a dragon's claw as he swirled it around once or twice before taking another small sip. Dressed only in t-shirt and jeans, his hair air-drying, but falling around him in straight white waves from an earlier shower, his legs crossed and stretched out as his feet rested on a nearby footstool, he'd already been there for perhaps an hour or two but had only gone through a glass and a half of the red wine. It wasn't an uncommon sight for him to bee seen there between the hours of five in the evening and ten at night; it seemed much his daily ritual. Most people left him well enough alone.
Except today, of course.
A newer student came up to him, watching Yuki in return. They'd been there for maybe fifteen minutes. He'd ignored them and focused on watching the other students. Naturally, they tired of being ignored. "You know it's rude to drink in front of underage students, right?"
Yuki smirked. he was drinking something stronger than he usually would, but, given the news he'd received today, he felt more talkative than usual, and was past the point of legal blood alcohol limit to be driving. "Have you ever heard of the Seven Corruptions?"
The student in question seemed confused. Naturally. "Do you mean the Seven Deadly Sins?"
Yuki laughed. "No. There are the Seven Sins and the Seven Virtues. Charity rivals Greed, Chastity goes against Lust, Diligence opposes Sloth, Humility rivals Pride, Kindness opposes Envy, Patience mirrors Wrath, and Temperance battles Gluttony. The Seven Corruptions, as they were so called, were a parody of these ideals, designed by a man who so fashioned himself to be the shadows of heart." Yuki set the bottle on the floor as he put his feet down and drained the rest of his glass before ticking off the names of the Corruptions on his fingers.
"The Corruptions were so labeled, if remembered correctly, Ambition, Belief, Desire, Knowledge, Love, Loyalty, and Strength. Those were the names chosen and given to seven people by a person who figured themselves a god, or close to, based upon their personalities and their goals in life. In theory, the seven Corruptions were neither good nor evil. I believe that was the intent; that these youths were to be able to make their choices and take any path they so choose: that the person who called them thus wanted them to become potent forces for good. However, they became known as the "Seven Corruptions" because the lot of them fell into their own negative ways and joined with a disorganized organization of thieves and murderers known collectively as the Crescent Scorpions. Incidentally enough, the true identities of six of the Seven Corruptions are listed among the sixteen strongest wielders of might or magic of all the Scorpions, from a collective period of thirty years."
Yuki sighed as he poured himself another glass of wine and leaned back again. "In my youth, I may have met a Corruption or two. Recent events have put them on my mind. Power, they had no lack of; I do not doubt for a moment even one single Corruption could have utterly devastated the world as we know it today at the height of their power. No mere killers as were the majority of the Crescent Scorpions, they could have collapsed governments through their individual talents. In truth, I'm not so sure they didn't. Curiosity dictates, however, and something I have never helped but to wonder at, had they made different choices, had there been a being to guide them away from the heart's shadows and towards the light of it, what might have they become?"
