It was hard to be away from her family, but after getting familiar with the campus, Anna decided to go exploring for a bit in the world outside of the school. It was good, she figured, to get to know the area that she was probably going to be living in for the rest of her life. After all, where else would she go? This was the safest place for her now, and she knew it.

She'd found a book at the school's library about sirens and decided to take it with her on her trip out to the beach. A little sunshine would be good for her spirits, she'd figured. Finding a fairly isolated spot, Anna spread out her beach towel on the sand and settled onto it, pulling off her shoes and socks. The sun warmed her skin in a pleasant way. Wiggling her toes happily, Anna opened the book and began to read about what she was. She hoped that it was an accurate piece of text.

"Huh," she muttered, tracing her fingers over a picture of a statue, depicting a woman with bird feet and wings. She looked at her own feet. Human. Last time she'd checked, she didn't have wings. There was a lot of bird imagery associated with sirens, as well as mermaids...and she wasn't that, either. Was she really one of these things? The music stuff all made sense, but she didn't look like a siren in the slightest, just...human. Weird.

Jeez, FINALLY.
The pyrokinetic strolled across the beach, rhythmically bobbing his head to some weird track (knowing him, probably from some game), as he took in the sights. A reprieve from work. From due date hell. From... Gods, he didn't even know anymore. He really did like school, but sometimes it was a pain in the ass, and StuCo Secretary business only made the due dates worse. Which is prooobably why he'd turned in a stack of charcoal as his most recent essay. H-He didn't mean to, thank you very much.... he just... Well. He was getting off-track already.
AHEM. THE POINT BEING: he really, really liked the summer. Especially the beach. And, since it was sand, and literally almost nothing (and noBODY) else, he couldn't be a klutz here. (How hard could it be to not trip over literally nothing? Really.) Plus, Nix knew lots of people showed up at beaches - what better way to get friends? His friend and roommate Havoc hadn't been around for a few days, which to be honest was really scary, he hadn't seen Lucy around recently much either... Even Ada was kind of scarce these days. Man - he really needed some new friends.
Eh. After this song.
With a particularly strong nod, the song playing finished, and Nix grinned. One of his favorites - the beat was to die for. All beachy, and summery, and other '-y' words he couldn't think of right now, especially upon seeing the calming blue waves of the ocean lap up onto his feet. Well, his socks. Yeaaah, not the smartest move he'd made. Still, he kept on walking, now listening to the silenc -
Waaaait, stop, hold up. Wait.
As he walked by the shore, something - er, someONE - caught his attention. A little ways away from him sat what looked like a girl. Least, he thought so. New friend, maybe? That'd be sweet. New friends always rocked.
Rock songs also rocked, he thought, as another one came on.
Naturally, by the middle of the song, he was singing the chorus, surprisingly well.

Greek mythology...sirens...dangerous...lured sailors...singing...bird-like features...

Anna was deep in her research. She was continuing to seriously doubt that she was in any relation to these creatures, but evidently it was true. How had she gone her whole life without knowing? Anna racked her brain. Well, she loved music, and could play just about any instrument...and could sing very well, or so she'd been told. She tried to remember the last time she sang to her brothers. The look on their faces, of...fascination, almost like they couldn't focus on anything else. They would sit close and just listen. Could that be part of the siren within her?

Her thoughts tapered off as she started to get back into her reading, when suddenly, a tune began to drift through the air. A tune that she knew. Without really thinking about it, Anna joined in with whoever was singing. Her eyes stopped taking in the words on the page while she added in the harmony to the voice's melody.

"HEY! Oh-oh, oh-oh o-whoa, o-o-oh-whoa, o-o-o-whoa! HEY!"

As Nix's voice was joined by Anna's, harmonizing with the tune perfectly, he stopped singing the bassline for a few seconds, just to see where that beautiful voice was coming from - aha. The girl who'd been reading was the one had joined in. And damn it, she had a real nice voice. Nix was even tempted to just stop singing altogether, and listen.

Instead, guess who opened his dumbass mouth and tried to talk?

Emphasis on tried - he got about half of a "Whoa, your voice is really...." before he trailed off, listening intently to the harmony. It really was a nice, soft voice.... but also it had a lot of power in it. Compared to this chick, he must've sounded like a dying duck. Aw, man... She must've had a background in Broadway or something. Or been a pop star. Or something. Nix had no idea, really.

Okay, enough of that.

With a breath, he jumped right back into the chorus... stopping after a few notes to listen again. Wow. The tune was spot-on, too.

The interruption of his singing caused Anna to look up from her book to see what had caused it, but the guy was just standing there looking at her. He started to say something, but it didn't quite make it out all the way. He tried to keep singing, and...then stopped again. Anna dropped down to the melody to fill in the void he'd left, adding in a few creative choices along the way.

Deciding that it seemed a little weird that she was sitting here and singing with - and now to - a stranger, Anna finished the verse she was on and let the tune fade away. "Hi," she lilted after a moment of taking in his expression. It was just like...

Nah, it was probably just her imagination. But what if it wasn't? Anna was still conflicted about this matter. What exactly was she? She wasn't sure how to even begin to figure it out. It was like...a puzzle, but without all the pieces there. A really, really complicated puzzle.

Predictably, Nix spent the next... what, minute? - listening with a starstruck expression on his face like he'd just met Will Roland or something. As soon as he'd stopped singing, she'd dropped down from the harmony part to the melody, and - if this was even possible? Nix wasn't even sure it was - somehow her singing got even better once he stopped singing. Jeez.

It took a few seconds to realize she wasn't singing anymore. Almost to Nix's disappointment, but hey. All good things gotta end - and hey, now he got to talk to her, something he'd wanted to do for a bit there. Clearing his throat, he spoke up in the best voice he could manage.
"Heh. Love the voice. Enchanting, really." It was amazing how he kept his cool and managed to put a suave little tremor in there. "I'm serious. Uh... Right. I should um, introduce myself. Phoenix is the name - and no, I'm not an actual phoenix (yet)," here, he chuckled, "but you can call me Nix. Nice to meetcha.....?" Oh, crap. He'd forgot to ask her name! So, also predictably, Nix sat there pretending to know her name... and probably looking stupid the whole time, just waiting for a name drop. Heheh... A sheepish tinge colored his expression as the seconds ticked by.

He was about to say something else - maybe something on the book she was reading, or perhaps the weather? - but then he took note of an almost troubled expression on the girl's face. He knew that look. It was the look of someone considering something. He could practically see the gears turning in her mind. The redhead himself took on a slightly concerned look and asked, "Something wrong?"

There was a brief silence between them both, which gave her more time to think about the whole puzzle scenario. Her thoughts fell away as he started to respond, finding complete sentences this time. She gave a humble smile as he complimented her singing. She hadn't really meant to join in, it had just sort of happened before she'd realized it. Music spoke to her in a way that words could not.

She'd been too lost in her own thoughts that she'd missed his grasp at her name, though she managed to catch his. Nix. Short for Phoenix. She stored it in her memory bank, having a feeling that this was about to be the birth of a new friendship. After all, Anna was great with making friends, willing or not.

Something wrong?

Anna debated for a moment before realizing everyone on this island knew everything about the world she'd just been thrust into over the past few months and broke down: "Yeah. I'm just...trying to figure out why I'm here, I guess."

She paused a moment before closing the book and displaying the cover for him. "It's just...I'm supposed to be one of these, but I don't really see how. I like music and all, but the whole luring sailors in to kill them and stuff? Not really my thing."

Ohhhh. Yeah, that made a LOT more sense. Okay. Yeah. Nix took in a deep breath and et it out.
"Y'know, that's kinda familiar 'round here. People makin' sense of what they're s'pose to be, yadda yadda yadda. It's all good." A friendly smile, as he shifted his weight onto his other foot, wondering what -
And there was his answer. Of COURSE - he couldn't believe he didn't see that one coming. A Siren. So THAT might've been some of the reason her voice rocked. Not the whole reason, surely - c'mon, her voice was amazing - but at least some of it. Nodding in understanding, he spoke again.
"Yeah, doesn't seem like it," he remarked, examining the book's cover. A pretty humanoid-looking creature - who, he had to say, looked quite attractive, really - was displayed on the cover, along with the caption of "Sirens". Least, he thought so - it was kind of hard to make out such small lettering. Seemed to be an ongoing problem with the university. "That's what sirens did in the PAST, right? You don't have'ta lure and kill, y'know. Be your own person." The most reassuring smile he could give (which ended up looking like a squiggly line anyways) spread across his face. "All that good motivational sh - um, stuff." Not really sure if the girl was okay with swearing or not. "Like.... it's the same with pyrokinetics, right, because a lot of them set fire to stuff and that's pretty bad, so they get a bad rap. I try not to, except homework does that sometimes because duedates exist and -" DAMNIT! He was rambling again - out loud this time! Ugh. He REALLY needed to work on that. "Uh, anyways. Sorry 'bout that."

From the corner of his eye, he spotted another figure around, but he wasn't sure of anything, so he let it be, instead focusing on the conversation. And NOT looking like a huge dork.

Learning that it wasn't uncommon for people to be trying to figure out what they were was a comforting thing to Anna, and she returned his smile with an easy one of her own, letting her troubled expression drop away and tilting her head a little to one side. He was kind. She liked kind people.

She noted the look of realization that crossed his face when she showed him the book she was reading, and wondered how it made more sense to him than it did to her. However, his next words gave her even more comfort, warming her insides like the sun warmed her skin. She listened politely to his ramblings, which she found rather interesting. A pyro-whosi-whatsit? She'd never heard of that before.

He seemed to catch himself, and she gave a light laugh. "Totally okay," she waved a hand as if dismissing his apology. "Thank you. I guess I never really thought of it like that. It's just...I've only known about all of this stuff for maybe two or three months and it's kind of...crazy."

"Oh. Jeez. Where are my manners? I'm Anna." She set the book aside and got to her feet. Naturally, like with all people she knew, she still had to look up at him, but she did so and extended a friendly hand. "It's nice to meet you, Nix~"

Nix chuckled alongside her, taking her hand into a warm handshake. "Nice to meetcha, Anna. Such a pretty name, if I can say." Nix's smile was as sincere as it could be.

"Yeah, I guess that'd be rough to take in, 'specially when you gotta move and stuff. But hey, at least there's no weird caves with freaky murderers anymore, yeah?" Leaning back a bit, Nix looked ahead to the horizon.... for some reason... - it wasn't even sunset yet. "Good enough for me. And, hey. No matter what, the people here are pretty nice. They know what it's like to be ostracized from people." A reassuring grin. "If ya need an ear, I have two of them." His grin morphed into something a little cheekier.

"Can you believe that - TWO ears?!" Cupping his hands behind his ears, he pushed them forward... Probably looking like a monkey in the process. But eh, that was okay. If it made her laugh, it was worth the monkey-ness.
