After a morning of paperwork, it was time to do what Rowan loved most of his duties at the fire station. Training drills and exercises for some of the newer recruits.
"Faster, come on, you can all do better than this!"
Rowan paced around the circuit he had set up for some fitness training, giving pointers to people as he passed them by. It still surprised him how much the people here listened to him. To his own kind, he was considered fairly young and inexperienced but to a lot of the people here, he was far past his sell by date, even if he didn't look it. Although, he got the feeling the scar might have added to the effect of importance everyone seemed to think he had. Once he was satisfied the recruits had the hang of the circuit, pulled off his jacket and flung it into a corner.
"Right then, who's up for a timed race against me?"
With a grin that suggested challenge, he picked out someone from the group, one that had been doing particularity well thus far.
"Ten circuits, slowest has to do 50 push-ups. You in?"
In the end, it was Rowan that won. Hardly surprising considering his naturally enhanced speed and strength. Some people disagreed with his training methods, the push ups that came with the inevitable losing, but he felt these races brought the group together. The challenge made them all work harder to better themselves, to beat him, and there was always the people watching and laughing when they weren't the ones participating. As he pulled his jacket back on again, grinning at his victory, he spotted someone staring out of the corner of his eye. He turned to look, eyeing the tall red-head.
"Hey there," Rowan gestured in the direction of the man "if you're planning on carrying on standing there staring, you might as well join in instead."

It had been a long time since Evan had a real job. He'd been raised with a silver spoon in his mouth, wanting for nothing, and he'd given it up to take a career that he felt passionately about. He'd loved that job, and then he'd lost it--and his family--all in the span of a weekend.

Working to catch other non-humans was not a real job. Sitting on his fat ass living off Sideralis money wasn't a real job. Living off Jugemu's kindness wasn't a real job.

People often said they wished they didn't have to work, but not working was downright excruciating at times.

He'd joined the tournament in an attempt to distract himself, and it was for that reason that he wasn't quite alone. Of course, he looked alone. Cori looked distinctly like she didn't want to be there with him, standing several feet away and refusing to look at him. To say the tournament hadn't exactly been going well was to vastly understate things.

Evan missed having shit to do. He missed having a real job.

Someone was running drills in the station as they walked by, and entirely without thinking Evan had simply... drifted over. Watched. Wondered if there was an alternate reality version of himself out there somewhere who was still a firefighter, still doing the thing he loved, still making a difference.

He was in the midst of daydreaming when he was very literally called out, but Evan had always been quick on the upkeep, and he shot a grin at the man who'd spoken.

"Oh, not worried I'd show your recruits up?"

"Not at all, they're very well trained," he replied, with a grin of his own. Rowan stepped back and gestured to the circuit with his arm, studying the redhead with a gleam in his eyes. He was built similarly to Rowan, just past 6 foot and all muscle. The confidence he spoke with certainly wasn't built on nothing, he looked like someone who worked out a lot. It seemed likely that he had probably done something like this before and he seemed like someone who would enjoy it too.

Cracking another grin, Rowan spoke again, "and you'd certainly never show me up, though you can feel free to try. I mean, you looked gloriously bored while you were stood staring over here. Or perhaps just very lost in thought. Either way, you looked like you needed something to do.” The challenge in Rowans eyes left little room to argue and when he sauntered over to the start and crossed his arms, waiting, there was no room left to argue at all. If the man wanted to make bold statements like that, Rowan could hardly let him walk away without a show. Besides, something made him think he’d be doing the man a favour in some way.
