Jett had picked a small, secluded cove in search of one of the many residential mermaids in Manta Carlos. He figured they'd want privacy and what better place than this? It really was quite serene, but he wasn't paying attention to that.
Jett had been all up and down this beach, and now he had picked this spot and watched and waited. He'd been at this for approximately four hours now, with no sign of anything. He was a patient hunter, had to be, but this was a little much for him.
His birthday being this month wasn't helping with his anxiety, nor was Jeong bringing it up. Sure, Jeje was excited about it, but Jett was not, and admitting that only upset his boyfriend, so he just stopped saying it.
Back to the mission at hand. Jett had heard an interesting rumor about mermaid hearts granting immortality, or some bullshit like that. He had no idea where that came from, but it was worth a shot. Now that he thought about it, how was he meant to test immortality once he believed he had it? Shit.

Coralei hummed to herself, absently flicking her tail to propell her forwards. The mermaid had just recently eaten, as evidenced by the blood and bits of flesh coating her exposed chest. The sun was shining and it was the perfect kind of day for lazing about in calm waters and napping in the soft sand of the coves on the southernmost shores.
Coralei twirled underwater to wash some of the blood from her chest, turning into her favourite cove. It was secluded and usually had a human or two on a hot day, meaning a free meal. Why did they all assume mermaids were friendly songstresses there to entertain them? Either way, she always entered the cove singing. Just in case there was a free meal waiting for her.

Jett had worn those silly putty-like earbuds, naturally. Normally that wouldn't have been enough, but they were charmed. A sound investment (ha!). He stood as he heard the singing, readying his rope and waiting for the perfect moment to toss it around the lovely mermaid as she came into the cove.
"This reminds me of that fantastic movie The Cove. Ever seen it? No. Sad. Spoiler warning, it doesn't have a happy ending."
He jumped down from his perch and immediately went to curb stomp her head into the ground, break any of those cute little sharp teeth, just in case she got any ideas.

Coralei let out an ungodly screech as the rope fell over top of her. She twisted and flailed, scales flashing brightly in the sun as the mermaid tangled herself in the rope. She froze when Jett jumped down beside her, eyeing him like a wild animal. I am not dying now.
Coralei gave him a low, menacing growl as he got closer. This mermaid wasn't going to go easily. When Jett's foot came down, Coralei lifted her head up and locked her jaws around the middle of his calf, teeth piercing muscle and sinew. She had rope in her mouth which wouldn't allow her to actually chew and swallow his flesh, but the taste of fresh blood was enough. Coralei started flailing agian with renewed vigor, deadset on dragging Jett underwater. Whereever deeper water was. A confused mermaid was still dangerous.

Jett hissed as he was bitten, without an ounce of hesitation he brought his fist down on her temple several times. It was an automatic reaction, but his disease magic pumped whatever it could into her. The longer she held on, the worse it would be later, not that she would live that long.
Sometimes, Jett went for the easy kill, but being bitten had annoyed him. Her thrashing wasn't helping. Once his leg was free (with a chunk missing or not) he straddled the mermaid and grabbed at her throat, pushing his thumbs at her windpipe to crush it.
He cursed under his breath. He could feel the prick of his skin that whispered the beginning of his shift, but he didn't give into the magic. It would take too long and he was frustrated enough that he wanted to get his hands dirty.

Coralei shrieked, the high pitched noise a violent assault on Jett’s hearing. She brought flesh with her as she tore away, leaving a nasty gap in his skin and tears in his muscle. The sharp smell of blood made her hungry for more, chewing on the rope in her mouth, trying to fray it. This was survival instinct, in a life or death situation. Him, or her, and Coralei wasn’t giving in that easy.
Thrashing harder, Coralei dragged the net deeper in… in the opposite direction of the entrance to the cove. Jett wasn’t giving up though, pinning her down to crush her throat and suffocate her. The mermaid lashed out with her tail, beating against Jett’s legs and worsening the wound on his leg with the intent of horribly shattering the bone. Coralei would fight right up until the very second she died, regardless of what happened.
