Altizica nodded “Yes it would be unpleasant for everyone if the souls of Eldritch wandered the place freely cause the lack of a body doesn’t mean much to them. I’m sure they’d still be able to turn buildings some upside down or whatever it is they do. And yes you are pretty much correct. He was an eater of all, not just souls. Their bodies were an attempt to satiate an unsatiatable urge to feed.”

Jackal was side eyeing him now. There was no way he could not.

"Uh huh," Jackal said, sounding intensely skeptical. "And this devourer is... who? Where? What? Because this whole thing and the way you're describing it makes it sound like you're basically imprisoning them."

Altizica took an extremely long sigh. How was he going to explain this. “I was a tiny part of a much larger being, that being was the devourer. After a ...scuffle I ate the devourer and took their place. I won’t beat around the bush however these souls are imprisoned but not by me...totally. I keep them contained but the Great Dream keeps them put. The dream decides when or if they will reawaken and be set loose. Sometimes it’s only a few centuries...some have been stuck in the dream for as long as any remember.

Jackal let out another quiet uh-huh as Altizica explained the whole... thing. Jackal didn't really get Eldritch. He never had. A lot of immortals and non-humans confused him, but most at least played by some kind of clearly understandable rules. Dragons, for example - he got dragons. Dragons made perfect sense. But Eldritch?

If they had rules, no one could ever explain them to him.

"Set loose," Jackal repeated. "You make it sound like they're feral. Aren't you one of them? An eldritch?" And he wasn't feral, was he?

Altizica paused for a long time. He certainly was making the souls trapped in there sound feral wasn’t he? Well it sadly wasn’t exactly wrong to say that. “I am Eldritch but we are all very different from one another. Many of us share a few similarities however, which is why we are able to be groups under a single term. The Eldritch consumed are very old, back when this universe was young. They lack empathy or morals as they never had reason to develop it. It is possible for them to learn these traits as I did however it is not certain they will....” Altizica didn’t want to speak of what would happen if they didn’t learn empathy but he felt like Jackal would understand the possibilities.

Well, if nothing else, Altizica's explanation was really cementing Jackal's dislike of eldritch as a whole. They didn't play by the same rules as everyone else. But they really should have.

"Well," Jackal said. "I can still remove them, and let the island sort out the mess. Then they're not bothering you."

He wasn't going to do it without permission, but he was perfectly happy to do just that.

"So unless you object, I'm going to just, do just that, peel 'em out of you, and call it a day."

Altizica thought hard about it, of course the souls constant churning inside him made it hard to do just that though. Despite what many people thought Altizica was much more caring than he let on to be and he wasn’t very comfortable with letting a bunch of Eldritch souls loose out onto Manta Carlos. Especially when he knew the capabilities of some of them and what they could do to the island if unchecked. “I do not feel comfortable ‘peeling’ all of these souls off of me. However I could allow perhaps one or two to be removed as a test if that is alright with you.”

"I mean, realistically," Jackal speculated, "once they're free of you, they should pass on to whatever comes next to them. The afterlife, or whatever."

Jackal was of the very firm opinion that there was an afterlife for everyone, even if it wasn't necessarily pleasant. That was where things were supposed to go when they died, so why didn't they?

"But if you only want one or two, then so be it. I'll just take one or two."

Altizica nodded firmly and waited patiently for Jackal to take out the souls inside of him. When he did however the souls wouldn’t ascend to some afterlife as Jackal had said. These souls just churned and twisted where they were pulled out over, otherwise motionless. “Like I said. One cannot force an Eldritch out of the Great Dream, it decides when they will be taken out.” Altizica watched the soul with little emotion, just staring at it.

Well, that was underwhelming. The moment he'd reached out, miming plucking something from the air to draw it out, it had just... sat there. Just the one soul, hanging out in the air, invisible to most but fully visible to him.

"Well, that's weird," Jackal said. "But whatever. You eldritch are... weird people, aren't you?"

Truthfully, he wasn't entirely convinced they could be considered people at all.
