The new class

This was a new semester and Sorcha was excited about her new Advanced Cellular Biology class. She had heard some good and bad things about the teacher, Mr. Kagerouryu. She saw him around the school of course, and what she saw was that he wasn't really bad looking for an old guy. But, to her the best part was that the students she knew who had taken his classes said that he gave interesting lectures and that you didn't feel like you needed to take a nap while he was talking.

She walked into the classroom and grabbed a desk in the back of the room. She thought her new, kind of friend, Naka had this class too. She was hoping to catch him as he walked in, so she threw her book bag on the seat next to her to save it for him, just in case.

Nakata entered the class room almost happily. He loved classes like this and the fact that Sorcha was here too made him happy about taking this class. He'd had this instructor in the past and he was pretty tough on him, always giving other students extensions if needed but never him. Naka had always needed to turn in his work the day of or earlier or risk not getting credit for the assignment.

As soon as he walked in, he took the seat next to Sorcha, removing the backpack from the seat and presumptuously taking it. He was starting to get better at english with her tutelage and was quite confident he could complete the course without forcing professor Kagerouryu to resort to speaking japanese.
"Thanks for saving the seat for me." He said with a smile, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek only seconds before the professor walked in.

Sorcha quickly looked at her desk when Naka kissed her. She couldn't believe that he did that, and in front of everybody in the room too! She slowly lifted her eyes to peek at him and saw that he was looking towards the front of the room. She enjoyed spending time with him and helping him with his English, it was the best part of her day. She liked hearing the compelling sound of his voice as he read from books that he had brought with him.

That train of thought brought her back full circle and aware that she was sitting in her Cell Bio class with a professor that reportedly had the same type of voice. She listened as he introduced himself and related the expectations of each student for the semester. She was hoping that if she did well enough in this class, she would be eligible for the study program abroad during the summer. She sooo did not want to go back and spend time with her father. It was getting harder and harder to be in the same room with him without being disrespectful and saying things that were better left unsaid.

She glanced over at Naka and noticed him listening intently, he seemed so focused on what was being said. She mentally sighed and figured she ought to do the same. Especially when the first words she heard were,"...any questions so far?"
Wow, she wasn't going to get too far in here if she could not even pay attention the very first day. She nudged Naka with her foot and whispered out of the side of her mouth,"What did he just say?"

Nakata pulled out the powerpoint notes that he had printed out for the class and handed them to Sorcha. He constantly took notes about whatever the teacher said if he didn't already have some grasp about it, though he had moved to taking notes about everything regardless of whether or not he knew what the teacher was talking about for Sorcha in case she missed something in this case. He also provided her with a pencil and smiled and nodded to let her know it would be fine.

Sorcha took the notes and was frustrated that once again, she didn't make herself understood. She had the notes already in her folder, she wouldn't tell Naka that because he was nice enough to give her a copy. She heard bits and pieces of what the professor had said and she heard phrases like "last years cell bio class..." and "when done with this you will...". What she had, and what Naka had handed to her were all about the class syllabus, not the information that the teacher was now saying.
Inwardly sighing she threw a smile at Naka, nodded and acted like all was right with the world. This is why she didn't talk to people, she always seemed to be misunderstood, because she could not seem to grasp how to talk so that people knew what she was saying. She seemed to spend so much time explaining herself that it became quite awkard to socialize.
She once again looked forward, bound and determined to pay attention and quit thinking so much about things other than what she wanted to know .

Naka wasn't sure what to tell her about what she'd missed, all he was doing right now was going over the syllabus but none of this information was going to be on the test and it was all written down on the paper anyway. Class wasn't the time for lengthy explanation that he would have to struggle through anyway.
"i'll cover what you missed after class." He whispered to her in Japanese.

——————-

Professor Kagerouryu, or Dr. Kage as some students referred to him, stood at the head of the class, covering the most boring material of the entire semester.
"In short, if you're going to miss a class, today is the day to miss. I will be covering more in depth information than what is in the book, and all tests will include at least 3 questions, per chapter, that are not in the book. Idealistically, this gives you a minimum of possibly 6 questions missed if you're lucky, 12 if you're not, so be on time and read chapter 1 before class next week. You're dismissed." He said, turned to take a seat at his desk. He had cut the class short but this would be the only vacation these kids would get.

Sorcha furiously scribbled down all of the information that the professor had given them in her own personal "shorthand". Maybe she would share it with Naka someday, nobody knew it but her, might be cool to have someone else understand her notes and musings. She stood up, stuffed all of the papers into her bag and slung it over her shoulder.

The rest of the students were scurrying towards the door like prisoners at the cell door so she stood back to let them pass. Mass humanity scared the dickens out of her and she avoided it at all costs. It quite often made her have to hurry to get to her classes on time. In her mind, it was a small price to pay to be able to walk along the hall without bodies crushing her or constant chatter filling her ears.

"So, have you had Dr. Kage before?, I have heard a lot about him , some good, some bad. I am kind of excited to have him though, the best thing I heard was his lectures are awesome.".

She waited for Naka to answer when she heard from behind her, "Ms. Corliss, a minute of your time please.". She froze in her tracks and instantly tried to replay the entire class in her head, she didnt think she did anything wrong the first day. She was sure she had a look of trepidation on her face when she looked at Naka and slowly turned around to walk back to the front of the class.

Naka opened his mouth to start talking when the teacher called Sorcha over to the desk to speak with him. Not wanting to leave her high and dry, he stayed at the spot where they were standing as if marking her place. It was instinct really, but he wasn't prepared to just walk out and leave her and he would argue that with the teacher if he had to. He wondered what it could have been that she was being pulled on the first day of classes by the professor. Unfortunately, he couldn't get too much closer which mean he was going to miss a few words here and there.

Sorcha noticed that Naka stood there waiting for her, it made her feel better knowing that he was waiting for her. She walked up to the professor and talked to him briefly before exhaling quickly. It had been a lot less painful than she though. She turned around and smiled at Naka and walking towards him started telling him what was going on.

"Thanks for staying, he just wanted to tell me that he knew I wanted the summer scholarship and let me know what the qualifications were. I pretty much have to be his best student to be put up for it. This class is going to be so hard, I just know it.: She blew her bangs out of her eyes and focused on walking down the hall when she remembered she didn't hear everything Dr. Kage had said.

"Do you think that maybe later, after last period, we could get together and you can tell me what I missed back there?"

She was hoping for some more time with Naka, it seemed like she enjoyed her time with him a little too much for she realized that she was making up excuses to be with him. He was doing great on his English and she was worried that soon she wouldn't have that time with him either. She mentally slapped her forehead when she just had an epiphany of sorts, she had a crush! Oh my goddess, her first crush! Who did she talk to? Was there books on it?, that is how she always got information before. She would head there first chance she got, she needed to know more about this whole boy thing before she really screwed it up.

Naka smiled but he wasn't too worried about going over the syllabus with her but he wasn't going to complain about spending the extra time with her.
"All he covered today was the syllabus, but I will be happy to go back through it with you." He said with a smile. What he didn't tell her was that the top student for the majority of Dr. Kage's classes had been him, and only then did he start to realize why that was. The instructor pushed him harder than a lot of the other students, something he was going to have to push her on as he didn't think she'd much appreciate him simply conceding the scholarship and letting her have it. She was pretty smart though, he was sure she could do it.
