This place was weird. No matter how used to it Rory got, she would always recognize how weird it was. Like too many things mashed together. Even if there were plenty of good things here, they were equally mixed in with the bad. Or, an even better example: too many good things created something bad.

That was Manta Carlos. It was a cage she couldn't leave. A blockade to back home.

And that was Lorelai's thought process when she stopped at her locker to pick up a few textbooks. Only her locker was the lower one and whoever had the top was currently there. She was content to wait it out when Rory recognized his face.

"Oh! Oh, you. I, uh, I met you in the community center, right? Shit, I'm bad with names. A-Aren?"

Aren had a long day today. Classes were rather dull and uneventful and he had to go to his therapy sessions in a few hours. He had originally planned to quickly put up the stuff he didn’t need into his locker but plans quickly changed when a familiar face greeted him. “H-Huh? Oh yea...I’m Aren. It’s.....Rory right?” Aren asked, his mood perking up slightly. He hadn’t expected to see a familiar face from the community center here so soon, but he really should have. “Your a junior too? I didn’t know!” Aren smiled brightly at Rory.

"Heh. Yeah, it's Rory and, uh, well no. I'm a senior but I'm taking some previous classes until September so I can catch up on this world's history." She sorted. "I mean dimension, actually, but semantics. Shit and now I'm rambling..."

She scrubbed her face with her hands and crouched and switch out a few of her textbooks while Aren gave her some wiggle room. When she stood back up, Rory wasn't feeling quite as awkward. "We didn't really get to talk at the community center, I left in a bit of a rush. This island is..." Weird. Hard to handle. Crazy as shit.

All of those and more worked.

“Ooooooh okay. That makes sense I guess. So your graduating really soon then I guess.” Aren gave a soft chuckle at Rory for a second. He knew exactly what she was talking about. “You don’t need to explain Rory I perfectly understand what you mean.” He gave a wide smile to Rory, he still seemed stressed about something though. “Well we can talk now! I don’t have anything going on!”

"Well, a year. Graduation is going on here, but I didn't get to finish my senior year, so." She shrugged.

Rory quirked a brow at him, momentary confusion lighting her eyes. Then she hid it with a smile. "Eh, you sure? You look kind of... panicked?" But she stepped off to the side of the hallway anyway, just so they weren't in people's ways.

Aren frowned slightly. “Oh I’m sorry Rory” He looked to the ground for a moment before following Rory to the side of the hallway. “What? No I’m fine I promise!” Aren went back to smiling, seeming perfectly fine now.

"Nah, it's fine. I only just figured what I wanted to do for college now that I'm here." She gave a slight, comical groan. "More school, right? Pft."

And while Rory thought it was odd and that ren was decidedly not fine, she let it go so the two of them could walk to the courtyard and find somewhere to sit before the next round of classes. It wouldn't be a lot of time, but Rory wasn't great at casual conversation, so maybe that was for the best.

"You have any idea what you plan to do after high school?"

Aren laughed a little bit at Rory’s comments. She was funny, he liked her. He followed closely behind her into the courtyard. “Um well.....” Aren thought a little bit about it, but he still wasn’t fully sure. “I maybe wanted to to go into magical studies. I already have a very..... experienced background in it so why not use it to my advantage?” Aren gave a soft smile.

Rory could guess what magical studies might be about, but that didn't stop her from wanting to be sure. "What even is magical studies? Magic is all so different here, what would it focus on?"

And then she moved onto the more... odd part of Aren's comment. "I remember you talking about the lab back in the center. If magical studies is close to what all that, are you sure you want to get into it? Sounds... well, like you might not like it."

Aren was about to speak but just seemed to trail off. “I......don’t really know. I want to say it’s the general study of magic and it’s uses but that seems way to broad for a major.” Aren contemplated what it meant by magical studies now. “The lab.....I did not hate the people there. As much as I seem to dislike the lab I completely understood their reasoning. They wished to contain and study magical entities in hopes of improving the world around them and all the while protecting their own version of the ‘veil’.” Aren’s smile seemed to fade into a more plain, straight face. “I once asked a head researcher why they did this, why they used live, human test subjects and more extreme methods. He told me ‘If you were the thing keeping the boundary of the supernatural and humankind at bay, to protect humans from what they likely couldn’t stop if provoked, how far would you go?’ It was at that point I began to understand their reasoning. They weren’t monsters or what any else might say...they were just trying to protect humanity the best they could.”
