It's 6:38 PM on October 31st when it happens. For those who celebrate, it is Samhain, the time of year when magic is most active, and when the walls between worlds are weakest.
The change is, for most, imperceptible. For others, it's almost painfully obvious. Those with a magical connection to the narrow reality will suddenly find the connection nearly cut off, weakened almost to the point of non-existence. Still there, but nothing like what it was.
Most chalk it up to another one of the oddities that have been plaguing the island as of late. It's not as if this is the first time something unexpected has come up, not by a long shot.
But as the night wears on, there is more to be concerned about.
External internet connections have been dropped, and most of the internet is simply inaccessible. Only the parts hosted on the island are still accessible, making for a poor experience.
The portal service is down, and those who can make their own portals will find it impossible to do so. Transport around the island itself is unaffected, but everything--including the transporter to the space station--is no longer working.
But it's dawn that brings the most alarm.
Dawn does not come.
7:30 AM hits and there isn't a hint of sunlight. 8 AM passes without any change.
The stars are no longer moving in the sky, someone says.
Something has gone wrong with Manta Carlos.

If your character has some kind of magical off-island tether, feel free to know something's weird at 6:38 PM.
If your character has a reason to be star gazing, they might notice that the stars don't appear to really be twinkling. After a while, they'll even notice that the stars and the moon are stationary in the sky.
This isn't the first time the island has lost external internet connection, but it is by far the longest. Normally service is restored fairly quickly.
Phone calls made to off island will simply hang. Phone calls on island work just fine.
