Chloe loved running. Her legs' structure and her superhuman strength meant that her jog could outpace the fastest normie's sprint. There was something satisfying about going so unnaturally fast - every time she did it, she got a little adrenaline rush. Her mind could tell how fast she was going. Instinctually, it seemed like tripping and falling was a huge danger. At this speed she thought she should be worried about breaking bones if she fell.

"Ow! Shit!"

As it turned out, falling wasn't going to hurt her that much. When she fell into the hole, she fell forward and slid across the ground for several feet. Her left leg and elbow were scraped up and bloody, but it was all superficial. Nothing was broken.

As she got to her feet, there was one question burning in her mind. "Why is there a huge freakin' hole here?" She got to her feet and checked herself out. In the eerie blue glow of the magic torches of the underground tunnels, she could see that her scrapes were all bloody and full of dirt. This would be really annoying to have to clean up.

Oh. Also, there were magic blue torches, and Chloe was in some sort of well lit underground tunnel system. Suddenly her own wounds seemed a little less interesting.

"I bet someone lives down here," she mumbled to herself. Or maybe it was some sort of under-construction halloween attraction. Either way, there was probably someone down here. She was going to find them, and she was going to tell them to put a wooden board or something over the goddamn entrance before she reported this bullshit to the authorities.

Which authorities would she call? Maybe a homeowner's association? She hadn't checked the gps on her phone in a little while, but she was probably still in some kind of outlying residential area.

The tunnel was made of old, heavily worn stone. It was filled with all manner of dust, cobwebs and debree. The tunnel would continue for a while before a set of stairs would continue downward. They would lead to another set of hallways, two on the side leading to various rooms, one leading further ahead towards more stairs. A loud clanging sound could be heard in one of the rooms in the halway to the right of the stairs.

These tunnels went on for a while, and they weren't in very good shape. Chloe was starting to think that, maybe, walking this far in was a bad decision. She patted her right thigh, checking to make sure that the magic knife her dad gave her for her birthday was still there, tucked away under her running shorts. Not that it was very likely she'd actually have to use the damn thing. She was just being paranoid.

She was just about to decide to leave when she heard a sound down the hallway.

"Hey!" she called out. "Is anyone there?"

The noises stopped for a second or two, before they resumed only this time they were headed in Chloe's direction. Soon something stepped out of one of the doorways, revealing what looked like an old rusted suit of armor, warped in places where black oozing tendrils poked out of them, with only one hole in its helmet to allow a glowing red eye to glare at Chloe. The creature let out a loud screech when suddenly it's head exploded into metal shards and a large oozing black, snake-like head burst out in its place. After the screech another roar could be heard in the other hallway. Another one of those things stepped out, this one holding a halberd and missing an arm, in it's place was a larger arm that didn't fit it so well, it too was oozing the same blackness as the other one.

Down the second set of stairs would be a maze of hallways and rooms, though there could be more prowling down there.

Chloe was at least 60% sure that these were just shapeshifting teenagers or something, trying to spook her. She didn't flinch. She kicked one of the nearest pieces of exploded helmet away from her feet.

"Alright, you got me, that's very spooky," Chloe said. "Now uh, I just came here to tell you guys. Um, or gals." She didn't want to assume anything. "I wanted to tell you that the entrance to this little tunnel is a hazard. I was running and I nearly killed myself falling through that hole." She gestured to her bloodied leg.

They kept shambling towards her.

"So, maybe you should put a board over it. Or put a sign up. Or something. So nobody else falls in?"

They were almost close enough to swing their weapons at her, now. She pulled her dagger out of the sheath under her running shorts. "Are you two even sentient?" She backed away towards the entrance, her palms out and facing them, right hand still holding the knife. It was something like the fighting stance she'd learned before coming to the academy, in that year she'd spent taking self defense courses. The palms facing out were supposed to make her seem less threatening, to get across the idea that she didn't want to fight.

But if they lunged at her, she would stand her ground. There was no way for her to know that she could outrun them.

The creature missing an arm picked up a large piece of crumbled rock with its free hand before lobbing it in Chloe's direction. The rock was likely to miss, little precision was put into the throw, but it did hit a supporting beam and suddenly the entrance was quickly being filled with debree. The creature then swung down with its halberd, trying to cleave Chloe in two. The first creature also moved in as its snake-like head reared itself before shooting forward, stretching it's neck hoping to bite her head off.

When the halberd came down, Chloe stepped forward, grabbing it by the shaft before yanking it out of the first creature's grasp. She had just finished doing that when the second creature lunged at her. Without thinking, she stabbed at the lunging head. Her dagger found its way into the creature's neck. She twisted the blade and pulled it out sideways, nearly slicing its monstrous head off. It was probably dead, now.

She tossed the halberd away behind her. There was a loud crash. Chloe looked back, seeing the tunnel collapse. This was the creature's opportunity describe. It reached for Chloe's neck. She kicked it in the chest hard enough to put a large, deep dent in its armor. It fell over backwards, no longer moving.

So now the immediate threat was gone. But she was trapped. The way she came was blocked, and trying to move any of the debris might just cause more of it to come crashing down on her. Breathing heavily, she stepped carefully over her kills, watching them closely for movement, before looking down each hallway. She didn't see anything else coming for her. So she pulled out her cellphone.

No signal.

"Damn it!" she hissed.

For the next few seconds, she quietly cussed herself out for every single decision that led to this predicament. Why the hell would she think someone lived down here? Why would she think it would be smart to go further into the eerie underground tunnel system? That's how dumbass teenagers died in horror movies.

Well, Chloe wasn't going to go down like that. Dumbass teenagers in horror movies usually didn't have superhuman strength or parents who gave them magic daggers for their birthday. She just had to stay calm and find another way out. The way she came in wouldn't work, but surely there was another exit. All she had to do was find it.

And so, with her knife drawn and her eyes and ears on high alert, she tiptoed further into the tunnels.

As Chloe head down the stairs she would hear the grinding of metal behind her as well as a wet squishy sound. The one with the large dent in its armor began to stand up as the dent seemed to begin righting itself back to its normal shape. The other, meanwhile, began to get back up as well, as a new snake head grew out of its neck hole before promptly biting off the other one. The previous head fell to the floor and began desolving, like butter in a microwave. The first one went to retrieve its halberd while the second went down the stairs to search for Chloe. Down the stairs would be yet three more hallways, although this time it was clear they branched off into yet more hallways and rooms. Every so often she might stumble upon a skeleton of one caught by the creatures. She would also occasionally find abandoned sets of armor like the armor the creatures wore, except this armor was scattered about and rusted heavily. If she were to pay close attention, she might notice that all the abandoned armor sets had been punctured through the middle of their chest piece. Down the middle hallway another one of the creatures appeared, this one seeming intact more or less, carrying two curved swords. It didn't seem to notice her yet.

Chloe heard them coming back to life. Her breathing became heavier. She started to notice the skeletons, the remains of others who came before her. She was going to die down here, wasn't she?

No. No she wasn't. She couldn't think like that. There was always something she could do. If all else failed, maybe she could summon her father, using a circle drawn in her own blood. And it was still possible for there to be another exit. But whatever she was going to do, she needed to do it fast. She couldn't keep fighting those things off if they would never die.

And that's when she saw the armors. At first she thought that they had belonged to adventurers, but they were conspicuously empty. And they all had holes in the same place, and they looked just like...

She noticed the creature with the scimitars. It was the same armor! She could kill them, if only she could puncture that armor! Chloe ducked into one of the side hallways, finding a piece of armor. She needed to conduct a quick experiment: she would stab this piece of armor as hard as she could with her knife. If it went through, she could try to fight the creatures, who would doubtless be alerted by the loud noise and come to kill her. If it didn't go through, she would run down this hallway as fast as she could, because it would still make a loud noise, and they would still be coming for her.

Chloe shifted the armor so she could hit it at a good angle.

She held her knife over it.

She swallowed. This could be the idea that got her killed. But she had to try it. This was probably her best shot. She just had to find out if she could win this fight. They would come at her and try to kill her, but that was going to happen anyway. She needed to un-freeze herself. She needed to

THUNK!

Between the magic of the blade and the strength of its wielder, she might as well have been poking an unsharpened pencil through a piece of paper. She was actually afraid for a moment that she had damaged the hilt, with how fast her blade had gne through.

So now she had to think fast. If she was going to fight them, she would want to take them one at a time. If she let them regroup that wouldn't be possible, so she needed to strike first.

She charged over to the stairwell. The snake-headed one had just made it down the stairs. She jabbed her blade into its chestplate, a free hand up and ready to push away its biting head if this didn't work.

The snake headed creature was about to snap at Chloe again when she appeared, when it suddenly felt for the first time in its life extreme pain in its chest. It immediately swung its arms out in shock trying to swat Chloe away. It desperately pried out the knife from its chest, tossing it away and slapping its hands over the wound. The wound seemed to be leaking pure darkness now at a quick pace. It dropped to its knees and let out another loud screetch before a jet of blackness shot out of its armor before the head desolved and the armor tumbled to pieces, empty.

Noticing the commotion, the one carrying twin scimitars came rushing in. Not concerned about the fate of his comrade, he immediately began slashing away at Chloe, swinging the sabers wildly. But despite the force and speed he was swinging his weapons, he showed no sign of stopping, he merely kept swinging and advancing on her steadily, letting out a constant low scream as he did.

The one carrying the halberd hurried down the stairs to give chase as well, arriving in time to see Chloe being backed off by the saber creature. With his might he tried throwing the halberd like a spear at the girl, but missed once again, this time it clipped the side of the saber creatures armor, causing it to spin around and swipe at the other, and impacted in a crack in the wall behind her. However, a secret door suddenly opened near it, showing some kind of chute sliding downward.

If Chloe took the chute route of escape, she would slide down a ways before landing in a larger, dusty room, filled with those blue torches lining the walls. To her left would be a large door, locked by some unkown mechanism. On her left appeared to be a table, with what looked like a body wrapped in layers of rags laying on top of it. In front of it, surrounded by various magical tomes of the dark arts, was a large armored figure sitting cross legged, similar to the other creatures, but different in many ways.

It's armor was much more intricately decorated and looked like it was of expert smithing. Blue, gilded cloth could be seen at the sides of its legs, draping over its shoulders, and covering its head. It's helmet was also differently built, showing more of it's face, or rather it's lack thereof. Unlike the other creatures, this one did not have a glowing red eye, or any eyes at all really, leaving only a black endless void for a face. It wore an intricate crown atop it's head, with a thin, almost translucent cloth that draped down its back like a cape, shimmering like silver.

The being looked up at the sound of Chloe's landing, before slowly standing up, speaking as it did.

"Another one, here in search of riches, or knowledge, but there is naught but dust and bone here to steal away." it spoke, its voice a deep and reverberating one, as if a monotone echo from the void.

"No matter, the outcome will be the same, you will pay for tresspassing my father's rest." The being said, it held out it's hand at it's side as a blade, made out of a dark void and rimmed in dim white light, formed in it's hand, before holding it pointed at Chloe as he took a few steps toward her. This thing was also a little taller than the previous creatures. A flame, black and white like the sword, formed in its free hand.

"As always I offer one last chance, thief. Turn back, your mission is doomed to failure."
