Strings had expected that she wouldn't be able to predict Mikhainon's moves. It wasn't like she was planning to win the game that day. She might have already lost the moment she had called too early.

"How nice of you to pay attention to the little things," Strings remarked, moving the pawn in front of the queen two steps forward, "But I suppose that's never entirely a bad thing. It saves one the trouble of having to be tied up with inane things humans pay attention to." her laughter echoed, "Maybe I really do just have a strong dislike for humans. Left over from memories?"

Strings paused for a moment. Memories? She doesn't have any but knowing she had such ideas in her subconscious made her wonder what kind of person she was and worried what may happen once she turns back. "How long do you even stay in one place, Demon? There's over a million places in the universe. Why here? Why now?"

Mikhainon would scoff but that might give him away. Instead, he ignored everything she said. This monster was chatty. He was here for a deal, not her entire un-life story.

"You assume time and space are things I'm bound to."

Dirt began to mold itself into his shape behind Strings. The dirt turned into another him that walked past their chest board, whispering information to Strings as he passed by. "You're trying to define me in a system that applies to you, when in fact I'm not governed by the same rules, the same time, space, feelings. I am a creature beyond your understanding."

The other him melted into the ground, its consciousness darting off to whatever time and space and offshoot dimension the greater him planned for it. It wasn't any of his business.

Mikhainon leaned back again, grinning. "Which renders anymore follow-up questions to 'humanize' me completely meaningless. You're buying time, Strings. What's the hold up?"

As Mikhainon shot down any other means of Strings to pry any more information about the demon, a manic grin crept up her blank face. If there was anyone else around, that grin could send them off running. But there was only the two abominations in the room. "Rain on my parade, why don't ya?"

Out of nowhere, one of Strings' tendrils momentarily materialized and stabbed through the middle of the chessboard. "I just hate not knowing things, Demon. Not understanding means the same thing to me. If I had any, I'd say it gets on my nerves," she said in a firm voice. She tossed the board aside, the pieces cluttering on the floor.

"I've already got myself for a problem. And you being in existence bothers me even more. I, at least, want to know more about you before I do anything brash." Strings got up from her seat, eight of her tendrils now visible, "So what if I am buying time? Do you really take me as an illogical lunatic who'll just bite at the bait, hmm, Mister Baltimore?"

Mikhainon watched as his chestboard was suddenly completely and utterly destroyed by Strings' tendrils, its pieces flying off all over her lair. A pity. That was varnished cherry wood.

"A lunatic, no. You are a smarter creature than you let on. But I like to think you're a gambler."

Mikhainon snapped his fingers. Sheets of paper began materializing from the ceiling. It fluttered and floated before eventually settling on a neat stack. The top paper said "CONTRACT" with his seal stamped at the center.

"You need not know what I am. I am here to provide a service, a service with terms and conditions that are completely accessible to you." He stood up and crossed his arms to show that he wasn't intimidated by Strings' empty threats. "I've shown you the best path you can take. Will you take it?"

He looked at the broken device Strings had been tinkering with since Day One. "Or... Will you choose this purgatory?"

He took a couple steps forward to reach out to touch Strings' cheek. Fuzzy. He didn't have access to her dimension. He smiled like a man that knew he had won. "I am the only unknown variable in this path. If you stay as you are, you will be dealing with more things you don't understand, extending to an unknown time frame with risks you do not understand. I need not be your enemy, Strings."

"A gambler, you say?" Strings hummed, taking the top paper off the stack with an idle tendril, "I do wonder how you see all of your clients, Demon." she said, as she scanned the contents of the paper. She seemed like she zoned out up until Mikhainon stepped forward to touch her projection. She couldn't even feel it--but she sensed a disturbance from the contact.

"It's actually because you're an unknown variable, that you're not an enemy. You are my subject," Strings stated bluntly. The grin faded out of her face when she spoke again, "Of course, that has nothing to do with this contract. Directly that is," she laughed, waving the paper in front of Mikhainon.

"There shouldn't be unknown variables in any of my calculations. I see everything. I exist everywhere. A single phenomenon happening simultaneously across timelines. My existence itself is an aberration. Nothing should be beyond my capacity." For a split second, it looked like her projection glitched, and then Strings was one step away from Mikhainon. "And yet here you are offering miracles and my salvation from this... purgatory, as you say." String's voice dripped with sarcasm, "How about that? How is it that the catalyst is an unknown variable yet the outcome is absolute?"

The grin went back to String's face, "'Risks that I don't understand', was it?"

"Theoretically, nothing should be beyond your capacity, and yet here I am and here you are. Aside from me, you're the biggest problem you came across. How's that working out for you? Figure yourself out yet?" He chuckled. "I've always known, you know. But my lips are sealed."

Mikhainon's grin was in place. He took a few steps back too and crossed his arms.

"You're going to do it because you don't have another choice, Strings," he said plainly, finally addressing the elephant in the room that loomed over the both of them, the metaphorical checkmate in their game. "Should we set up a date?"

"Touche," Strings scoffed, withdrawing her tendrils out of sight. Even if Strings wanted to deny that, Mikhainon was spot on. She said it herself after all. She was an aberration. Yet another unknown variable in her equation.

"You've made your point, Demon," she admitted in defeat. "There isn't any other option available with a guaranteed result," she continued before glitching out of sight.

Strings rematerialized to where the chessboard now lay in ruin, holding the king in her hand. "Though if I'd known any better, I'd say you're really just cornering me." If only she did know.

"One week's time. The nearest clearing from here. How's that for you?"

Mikhainon grinned like the devil.

"It works perfectly, my dear Strings."

And without further drama, Mikhainon took one, two, three steps back before a pair of wings surrounded his body and shrunk him to a small raven. It flew out of Strings' lair, the flapping of its wings and his laughter echoing through the dark chamber. A gust of wind threw the contract's papers all over, but as the the top paper landed at the center of the room, the once black print of his seal had been turned into a gold with a red note that said "1 WEEK" written over it.
