It had been a busy morning in the office. Kalvin has had a busier morning in general. Kalvin arrived early to get some of his work done on time. After he completed his tasks with a half-hour to spare, he pulled out his school notes and a pair of earplugs. He then took that time to review for a class later in the day. In the half-hour he took to study, he noticed that more people came in and out of the general direction of the break room. More than normal anyway. At the time, it didn't mean much for him.

Now, he understood the repercussions of having the entire floor make frequent visits to the break room. The place was messier than usual--though Kalvin clearly considered the level of messy in a corporate office to already be clean. He chewed the inside of his cheek thoughtfully as he looked over the misplaced coffee essentials and other breakroom gadgets. It was the hour just before lunchtime--one of the busiest hours on a Tuesday.

With a shrug, Kal placed his mug on a counter and started a fresh pot. While he waited, he figured he might as well clean up a little. He had the time and everyone else was busy. He reckoned other people would do it too if they were in his shoes.

Kalvin was refilling the cream and sugar containers just as the coffee maker made an exhausted beep, if that was possible. However, when he turned to look at the coffee maker, he saw no steam rising from the open tip of the jug. "Huh?" Kalvin cautiously poked at the jug. Its temperature wasn't anything close to warm at all. Weird.

It had been a long and exhausting morning, and Zora had been in the office since seven AM. And while she had brought a large coffee with her from the coffee and bakeshop that just opened down the street from the office, a few hours had gone by since then and now she was desperate for another cup of caffeine.

"You're a lifesaver!" Zora exclaimed in relief when she stepped into the staff kitchen and saw him at the coffee maker. "Can you pour me a cup too when you are finished?" she asked as she took a clean cup from the cupboard and started tidying up a little as she did so.

Kalvin was still bent down and inspecting the machine when Zora arrived. Kalvin glanced at her and offered a polite smile. "Sure but I wouldn't call me a lifesaver..." he said, still frowning at the coffee maker. He tapped the glass jar. It looked full of coffee that's freshly brewed and ready to serve but there was an issue. "I think something's wrong with this thing. This coffee isn't hot at all."

He tentatively placed his hand by the other parts of the machine. He checked the parts that were meant to be hot. Yet, none seemed to be. "It might be broken, I think," he said with a sad sigh.

"Broken? Are you sure?" Zoraida asked hesitantly as she walked over to the coffee machine to see what the problem was. She knew that sometimes if it wasn't plugged in properly it refused to heat up.

However, after some unplugging, plugging in, fiddling with the on and off button, and a few strategic taps and bangs to the machine - or percussive maintenance - Zora stood back and sighed in disappointment and resignation. She had really wanted a cup of coffee.

"It looks like you might be right," she concluded, unplugging it from the wall altogether. "Guess it's coffee the old fashioned way, or calling for take out," she said as she put her cup back in the cupboard.

Kalvin echoed her disappointed sigh. He felt bad for the wasted coffee and water. He could foresee a lot of frustrated office mates later coming to complain about the coffee machine. "There's no need to call for one. I've got time to get takeout for us," he offered after a quick check of the clock. The best part about working here was that there were several coffee shops nearby. Plus, he needed to stretch his legs. He might get Rafael a coffee on the way, too. "Where do you usually get your coffee?"

"Bearclaw Bakery & Cafe is normally where I get my morning coffee," Zora replied as she looked at Kalvin, sort of surprised, but very grateful at the same time when he offered to get her some coffee.

"I get the staff room baking there too," she explained referring to the muffins, cookies, and scones she usually supplied the kitchen with.

"If you want, I can go with you and we can stock up the kitchen, get our coffee, and look for a new coffee machine in the process?" she offered as she thought about her schedule for the day, and realised she was fairly free.

Kalvin nodded, immediately taking mental note of this. As far as he knew, it was where Rafael liked to get his coffee at times too. He gave Zora a surprised look when she offered to go with him. "I wouldn't say no to that," he said with a smile and a shrug. "I mean, as long as you're not busy, of course."

He emptied the coffee maker and set it aside. Then he unplugged it so nobody else had to go through the troubleshooting they both did. After he tidied up in the breakroom, Kalvin turned to Zora. "Let me just get my jacket," he said before he made his way to his desk to get the article of clothing and grab his phone.

Before he made his way out, he knocked at Rafael's door and popped his head in. "Hey, boss. I just wanted to let you know I'll be gone for a bit," he said. "The coffee maker's broken and I was going to grab coffee. Also, maybe a new coffee maker on the way. Um, Miss Zora offered."

Rafael just looked up from a building contract and nodded in understanding before he waved his assistant off, telling him to have fun and that, if they were going to get a new machine to look for one that could make espresso and a large pot of coffee.

"Oh? You mean like the one we saw last summer at that little place on the coast?" Zora stated, remembering that they had both remarked on a coffee maker they had seen on their business trip to Scotland.

"Exactly that, Now go, I have a meeting in fifteen," Rafael said as he waved the two off.

Kalvin nodded and followed Rafael's instructions to go. They stepped into the elevator, Kalvin letting her enter and exit first. He had a guess on which trip that was that they saw the espresso coffee maker. For all he knew though, it could've been a trip they'd gone on before he got hired. Still, he saw no harm in trying his guess. "You think we'll find that exact one you saw on the French Riviera here?" he asked Zora as they made their way out of the building.

As they went down a corner around the block, Kalvin pulled his jacket on. "Oh, by the way, Miss Zora, you don't mind if I get Rafael's coffee today, do you?" he asked, assuming she'd get coffee for her grandfather. "It's just... you know, he always invites me to lunch and coffee sometimes. I wanna return at least a tiny bit of that, erm, amiability--I mean, amicability."

Thanking Kalvin Zora smiled at his politeness and stepped into the elevator first. "I am really not too sure.... I mean, we should be able to find a combination coffee maker... " she remarked, though not all that positive about it as it was not something that normal.

"If not, then we will need to pick one up when we go back through the gates back to Earth next week and buy maybe a normal maker for now," she said as a sort of compromise.

Riding down to the lobby with Kalvin, Zora stopped when they were on the street. "Sure... If you want to..." she said as she looked at Kalvin in surprise when he requested to pay for Rafael's coffee.

"Though, I was just going to put everyone's coffee on the company card," she explained, not wanting Kalvin to think he had to pay for his own coffee.
