It smelled kind of like a skunk. That was the first thing she noticed.

Chloe didn’t think that there were any skunks on this island. At least, not any mundane skunks. She wouldn’t be surprised if the forbidden forest had some kind of enormous, magical dire skunk roaming around, stinking up the place like only a monstrous super-skunk could. If there was such a thing, though, it probably wouldn’t be near the trail Chloe was walking on.

The second thing she noticed was a light. It wasn’t terribly bright, but she could still see it through the bushes for the several seconds it lasted. If not for the darkness of the cloudy late-afternoon sky, she might have missed it. It made her curious. She stopped and stepped through the bushes to get a better look at the source of the light.

It was a blond girl with a lot of tattoos, and she was smoking from an unusual-looking pipe.

“Uh, sorry to interrupt, but… are you smoking pot?” Chloe asked. There wasn’t any hostility in her voice; she was genuinely curious. She had never actually seen someone smoking pot before.

Thorn... can't remember how she got here, really.

Something about... Nature hikes? That wasn't it. She didn't like sports. Was she going to draw trees? Visit the graveyard? Visit the graveyard and draw the gravestones? Something, something art projects. She didn't know, and honestly she didn't care anymore. She was settled between a tall tree and bush that just — just smelled great. Fresh.

Could you order pizza in the forest?

"... are you smoking pot?"

Who was that.

Thorn looked over to where the voice was coming from, eyes trying to focus and head trying even harder to care. "Yeah I am, doll. Come on, take a hit if you want."

A stranger was offering her pot.

Chloe thought about it. She’d never had pot before, and she hadn’t made any effort to find out how to get it. She didn’t have any classes because it was the summer, and she didn’t have any work tomorrow.

“Eh, what the hell. Sure.” Chloe shrugged sat down cross-legged against a nearby tree, facing the tattooed stranger. There wasn’t anything else she needed to be doing; she was just on her way back to her dorm from work. The half-demon was wearing a lot more black and louder makeup than usual, to fit with the store’s vaguely goth or punk rock theme. “I’m Chloe.” She said.

“So, uh… how do I smoke?”

"Chloe? No shit! I'm a Chloe. Or I was. But then I fell deeper into the emo hole." Thorn chuckled a little, too zoned out to even feel bad about her self-deprecating jokes. She gave 'Chloe' the once over. Her whole aesthetic was rad. She'd say she'd smoke pot with her, but it looked like she already was? Her thoughts were like gentle waves. All she could think about was 'nice'. "I'm Thorn."

When asked about how to actually smoke pot, Thorn zoned out. There were specific terms for these. She just knew it. But her thinking was getting overshadowed by how she got momentarily distracted about the name of that one actor in that one TV show she was watching recently. She knew she could remember him from somewhere.

"Just... just watch, Thorn. Chloe." She placed her lips inside the tube, covered the carb with a finger, lit the substance and took a hit. She let the smoke settle in her lungs for a few seconds before huffing out a considerably smaller one than what she took in. "Oh, man, good shit."

She waved the bong in front of Chloe.
