Joseph Thorn had been with MCPD for a very long time, all in all one could call him a tired old man and be mostly right. So parties weren't really his thing, he'd prefer to be home with a beer, yet here he was.

He quietly slipped into the break room, his sharp eyes instinctively took everything in. Mostly colleagues and what he assumed was the child of one of them. Skipping the soda he poured himself a cup of coffee and sipped it. There had been a time decades ago he was a social person, certain events had changed that for him, that didn't mean he wasn't friendly and wouldn't chat among the others, but for how he was content with quietly sipping his coffee.

"I definitely don't envy you there," Angelo said. "I had two or three months to relax and get used to things before they really threw me into the fire when I joined up. No such mercy for March recruits."

Raphael seemed to be getting along with Ceidwen's daughter (whose name completely escaped him - something with an R?), and Angelo turned his attention back to Ceidwen and Regan proper.

"I'd seen your little girl around the office a few times, but I think this might be the first time we've spoken in a manner that isn't yelling information across a crime scene." Which did happen, at times. "Socializing with cops on and off duty is a pretty different experience, I have to say."

“Reagan Riley,” Reagan said with a nod as she shook Ceidwen’s hand. Ceidwen was clearly inspecting her, and Reagan was clearly doing the same in return. She was a Fae. Reagan was only half Selkie, but she was more than capable of sensing who was ‘like’ that side of her.

Once Ceidwen turned her attention to Angelo, Reagan stole another glance at Ravina. In Reagan’s line of work, it wasn’t every day she got to see a healthy, happy child. Reagan almost felt…unequipped to even interact with happy children, when her specialty was in quite the opposite. But she was able to give a soft smile to the girl—an expression rarely seen on Reagan’s face.

But she was all business again when she turned back to the adults.

“May I ask her name?”

Ceidwen shook her head, though not at anything in particular. "She 'as learned to stay out of the way, mostly," she responded to Angelo. "I would be surprised if'n she decided to come 'n' talk to ye."

Ceidwen considered the next part of the sentence. "Yes, t'is different, but I don't imagine we'll be talkin' much outside the office, 'nless ye lookin' for friends." Which was really just a polite way of saying she had no intention of trying to make friends.

Upon asking her daughter's name, Ceidwen's full attention returned to Reagan and the expression she wore was far from warm. "Ravina. Named after water."

There was definitely something going on between Ravina and Ceidwen, but Angelo didn't have a clue. Some kind of tension? Animosity even? Only he didn't have any sort of power that would give him the clue he was missing, and he didn't know either woman well enough to know that they were fae. Even so, Angelo wasn't going to just let the entire weird tension pass him by, and he quirked an eyebrow as he glanced between them.

"Am I missing something? Psychic conversation maybe?" Which he doubted, if only because of how mindbogglingly rude it would be if there was one going on.

Reagan blinked at Angelo’s question.

“We are Fae, Officer. This is how we speak to each other.”

Of course, Reagan said this with absolute confidence—even though she was not even raised among Fae. Or even full Fae herself. It didn’t matter; Reagan knew enough from her experienced with the mermaid in her home country, and the few other Fae she had met on the island in her short time there.

"She is more or less correct," Ceidwen responded to both Angelo and Reagan, eyes still firmly planted on the latter. "You must forgive me. I do not fare well with the merfolk."

And really, Ceidwen wanted to roll her eyes at Reagan's assumption that merfolk were Fae, but then, it could be argued that many things that were considered Fae were not and vice versa.

It was at this point that Ravina had grown bored of sitting under the table enjoying secret snacks and crawled out to run over to Ceidwen and the adults she was speaking with. She hesitated before approaching them, eyeing Angelo in particular.

He looked kind enough with very fluffy hair! But really, staring at his arms, Ravina wondered if he could do that some parents around here did, wherein they lifted a child and spun them, giving the sensation of flying. She was too afraid to ask.

In fact, Ravina wouldn't have said anything to him at all had she not seen his face. She gasped and pointed before she could stop herself.

"What happened!"

Ceidwen sputtered a little before shooting a look at her daughter. "Ravina, it is impolite to point or speak so bluntly."

Shiariel watched the little girl for a little longer with a soft motherly smile. She could remember when Soren was as small and a little as shy. The reminiscent part of her wished she could go back to such happier times, when her husband was still alive and she hadn't abandoned her son for nearly a year because of it...

Blinking away a tear that then trailed down the side of her cheek. Shiariel brushed it away with a small gesture and took a steadying inhalation of breath. Now wasn't a good time for that sort of thing. So she turned back to her papers and wrote down a thing or two in the margins making notes for herself. She only got a little farther along before she couldn't help but sigh and put the stack of papers next to herself and look at Raphael. "So... anything interesting going on in your life?" Inwardly Shiariel cringed, she was terrible at small talk.

Fae. Pah. Angelo had received plenty of species-education and sensitivity training, but even so the intricacies of the fae would give an actual fae a headache, let alone Angelo, who was about as far from fae as they got.

Or not quite, since a dullahan was a reaper, and also considered a fae...

Thankfully Angelo was distracted from his line of thought by Ceidwen's little girl, who seemed rather alarmed by his face, going so far as to point. He was sure that Ceidwen herself was mortified, but Angelo simply waved off her concern.

"These?" Angelo said, gesturing to his hand. "Honestly couldn't tell you exactly. Lots of fights when I was younger. But it's been a long time since I got any big new scars." Just a lot of little ones from work.

The fact that he was wearing a big 'ol smile while answering Ravina's question probably helped a great deal in making the scars look less horrifying.

You can only sit around making funny faces at a kid you don't know for so long before you start to seem weird and creepy. Raphael returned to his snacks and drinks for a moment, zoning out. He was still exhausted. Everyone was, as far as he could tell.

Shiariel snapped him out of it by attempting small talk. It seemed painfully forced. "...Uh, yeah. So, I live with the Misfits Pack. That's a kind of werewolf community that lives out in the forest near the academy, you know. We sort of function like a pack, and we act as a foster home at the same time. I'm one of the pack's leadership, and... well, at some point soon, I'm going to have to take some of the newer kids out to teach them how to hunt like a pack of wolves. Because that's a thing we do every full moon."

Raphael could probably go on about this for a long time, but he somehow doubted Shiariel would be interested in hearing, in detail, how that was actually done.

"How about you?"
