"Back in Halcyon," Jude admitted as they set off towards the indicated shops, "my dad just had a place he went to all the time. If I wanted to pick something up... well, they knew it was for him. The kind of old place that ran in the family. This is just another one of those speed bumps that I have to adjust to. Finding new places. Learning the brands. All that stuff."

It was smalltalk, but it felt good to talk about it just the same. To talk about how things were different. It was easy to talk about the big adjustments--living with Angelo, and then living with his dad again--but harder to talk about the small things. To talk about the brands being different. To talk about not recognizing some foods. It was the little things that tripped him up the most, more than anything else.

"Does your grandfather smoke a lot of cigars? It seems kind of like the old well off man sort of thing. Like golf."

As they headed toward the shops, Zora nodded in understanding, she did actually know what he was talking about in a way. Life outside the island was just different somehow. She might have been from Earth, or the Narrow Reality or whatever people chose to call it; however things were different on the island. The brands were different, yes, there were a lot of "normal" things from other countries, places here, but somehow, things were different.

In London, you didn't find human flesh or some exotic alien species alongside your beef ribs and chicken thighs. And even clothing could be weird at times, sweaters made for many armed beings, or fabric that magically adapted to the wearer, or some amazing fabric that was almost bulletproof yet lighter than silk. Zora still found herself slightly amazed at some of the things she came across.

"Rafael is indeed one of the old well-off gent types,' Zora grinned at the question. "Take out golf, add in horse racing, fine whiskey and brandy, and quality handmade suits, and you have my centuries old grandfather," she laughed.

"What about your father? How is he adjusting to the island," she asked curiously as they arrived at the first tobacconists, "Greenleaf and Sons".

"Polo? Please tell me he plays polo," Jude said with a laugh. Polo was like, the rich person sport. It was hitting small balls on horses. It was like horse racing and golf had a baby. Jude didn't even know anyone who played it, but that had more to do with living in a very urban part of the city.

"My dad is about... about half of those things. Whiskey and brandy and quality suits... He always like Brioni, which thankfully exists in this dimension."

It wasn't like they had an outlet on the island or anything, but you could have them shipped in... assuming you had the cash.

They did not, to say the least.

"He's adjusting," Jude said. "He's very adaptable, which is nice. I'm fifty percent 'he's doing better than I thought because it's a big adjustment', and fifty percent 'of course he'd adjust just fine, you could trap him underwater and he'd figure out how to grow gills."

Adraxis might have taken issue with that, though...

Jude let himself into the store, holding the door for Zora before going to browse. Every so often, he spotted a brand he recognized, but they were few and far between. Probably lots more would be recognized by his father, because Jude's perfect memory didn't go far back enough to remember everything his father had ever smoked.

"I know he likes these ones," Jude said, pointing to one brand. "I've seen them a few times. Supposedly there are... ah, everlasting cigars? More expensive, but I'd like to get at least one for pure utility."

Zora actually let out a giggle at the image of her grandfather playing polo. It was an odd mental image to be sure. "I am afraid to disappoint, he's into horse racing..." she told Jude. "Although, I believe, in the late 1800s, he was very much a polo enthusiast, if that counts?" she grinned.

"Your father sounds like an admirable person," Zora admitted, "And truthfully, I am not surprised. By the sounds of it, you are very much like him... or he is very much like you." she concluded with a teasing grin.

Since she had met him, Jude had never once complained about his lot in life and his having to adjust to life on Manta Carlos, and even the recent loss of his arm had not really dampened his good-nature. It was, in her books, very admirable in someone so young. And she could easily see Basilio being the same way.

When they entered the shop, Zora breathed deeply. She enjoyed the smell of good pipe tobacco and cigars. The smells were, somewhat comforting. They reminded her of Rafael's house when she was a child.

"These are also a good brand," she said referring to a Cuban Spanish company that was popular outside of Manta Carlos. "I don't know if you have them on your list or not?" she said questioningly as she came over to look at the everlasting cigars. Those were news to her. She had never seen one before. "That is certainly different," she said as she picked up a box and looked at it.

"I have never heard of such a thing. I wonder if they are any good?" she said as she looked at Jude, wondering if he knew anything about them.

In truth, Jude didn't complain because he considered himself overwhelmingly lucky. Many people came to the island with nothing, but he'd been fortunate. Even to begin he'd arrived with friends, and now? He had the people who mattered most to him.

"He's an amazing man," Jude said. "The adjustment is harder on him then It is on me, I think. School is school, and I'm happy to get back to it, but he lost all his businesses, and all the hard work he put into things meant nothing. So I want to help him adjust. Help... get back to normal."

Maybe not normal. But close.

Jude didn't actually like the smell of tobacco all that much, but it was a familiar smell just the same, and he only wrinkled his nose a bit, keeping close to Zoraida. He wondered what the shop keeper would think. That they were dating? Doubtful. She looked well older than him. An older sister, maybe? Only there was no family resemblance to speak of.

Probably it would just be hard to peg.

Jude paused a moment, and then a square of air between them wavered for a moment. Jude reached up, his robotic hand vanishing into it, and then after a few moments of what was very awkward fumbling, he withdrew his hand, a note clasped between his fingers that he offered to Zora, the shimmer in the air vanishing.

"Jericho, the owner of the Fox Hole wrote down some suggestions," he said. "I'm not sure if you'll recognize any of them though." He'd leave the everlasting for later, after she'd looked over the list.

"A pocket dimension? Very nice." Zora remarked, quite impressed as she looked at Jude in surprise. She hadn't known he had one. He must have met a regalia who had offered him such a very handy ability.

Thanking Jude, she took the piece of paper and scanned the list, surprisingly enough, she knew quite a few of the brands written there. And near the bottom was the cigar brand she was holding in her hand. "This one is on the list," she told Jude, "A possibility, maybe?" Zora asked as she held up the cigar.

"It's new," Jude said. "Apparently the people running the tournament were impressed by the fact that I lost so much without quitting that they asked Aria if she'd be willing to bond with me as well as the person she'd pacted with." Did Zora know Aria? Probably not, but he figured from context alone they'd be able to figure out they were a Regalia.

"Then that's probably a good choice," he said with a nod to the cigar. "I figured... three or four normal ones, and then an endless one. I don't know if he has a cutter yet, so I'll need that too." Did they have a humidor? He mentally riffled through before deciding no. "And a proper humidor."

Which was going to be a lot. The whole Christmas thing was definitely dipping into his savings, but that was what they were for, weren't they?

"I figure endless cigars probably aren't as high quality. But it's a tradeoff."

Here Zora looked at Jude strangely for a moment, and then burst out laughing, "So it was you who did worse than me in the tournament," she chuckled. "I think I won like one tournament and tied one or two, the rest I lost," she said explained with a smile. She had heard somebody had done worse than her, now she knew who it was. It was too funny in a way.

"Glad to know I lost to a friend," she laughed, finding the whole thing rather hilarious.

Zora then talked to the clerk, discussed a good quality cutter that was not too expensive, a humidor and the cigars in question. Getting a box of cigars and an everlasting cigar for her grandfather too. And when it was all wrapped together nicely, and about to be rung up, Zora turned to Jude, "Anything else?" she asked.

Jude's cheeks went pink when she laughed. Yep. He'd lost a lot, and he briefly filed back, counting...

"I started out well and won a few matches... but then I lost five matches in a row. The last one my opponent even cheated, but I realized it wasn't worth arguing over so I just let it be. I think that was the bit that impressed them, honestly... which is a bit unfair, since I already knew that winning didn't matter. I'd have declined the prize anyway."

He was pretty sure Broen would have told her the 'prize' already, meaning she was one of the others who could understand what he meant.

Jude was not entirely paying attention as she spoke to the clerk. Around the time she discussed cutters, he'd been picking his way through the front cabinets, squinting at the different brands and mentally recording them all for later. That was one of the other big advantages of a perfect memory (and recall): He could always compare prices easily.

When the purchase was done, Jude flipped his eyes up, almost protesting her having made the purchase before realizing that... no. He couldn't make the purchase himself. He'd have to hand her the cash after they'd left the store, and he quickly shook his head.

The man behind the counter was definitely giving them looks, but they weren't being too flagrant, and considering what the purchase was...

Well, it wasn't like most teenagers who were going to smoke were going to drop a bunch of money on a humidor or a quality cigar cutter.

Zora had actually noticed the looks the clerk was giving them as they wandered around the shop, and she had been tempted to say (or do) something like hug Jude or call him "honey" to wind the clerk up even more but had decided not too, mainly for Jude's sake, not wanting to embarrass him with her outlandish behavior.

Before they totaled up the purchase, Zora added a few more things for her grandfather and a vintage looking gas lighter for Broen. She knew he smoked, but wasn't sure what to get him and so decided to throw it in last minute as one of his gifts.

Thanking the clerk when they were done and everything rung up, in bags and paid for, Zora then gestured to Jude with her head as she headed to the door. "Did you want to check out the other shop?" she asked him curiously as she passed Jude his somewhat larger bag of items from the shop.
