As much as he wanted to poke his sweetheart more about it, Mikhainon got up and fetched her a glass of water with a smile. "Take a break for a few moments and gather your strength. You'll need it."

After that, Mikhainon began gathering the paraphernalia needed for the ritual. Unlike his usual smug confidence, his movements here were erratic and jittery, head reviewing his list over and over again. There were few things this iteration of Mikhainon feared, and botching up a demon summoning ritual was one of them.

He handed Chloe a set of robes and a stack of papers. "Before we begin, put the robes on and recite the preliminary incantations." Mikhainon pulled out his colored chalks and began to draw three summoning circles on the floor — one as the main base (his seal), one for wishes (Arach), one for protection. He had special boards made so he wouldn't ruin his carpet. Carefully, he wrote his name in Hebrew so Chloe wouldn't be able to read it, and Arach's name in plain English.

"The plan is to summon... other me and to request the familiar Arach. The process of summoning is simple: Sit on the biggest circle, close your eyes, and recite the Sacraments written on the papers I gave you. Clear your mind of all thoughts that don't relate to the ritual. You'd know it when it happens." When he was done, he set the chalks aside and clapped. "Beam of light. Giant tentacles. A strong mental attack. You need to be ready for it, Chloe. When it ends, you can talk to me normally."

He grinned. "Don't worry. I'm sure I'll respond to Dad, too."

God. Thanks, dad. That was still a proud, shining moment. He wished he had time to bask in that.

He gestured to the circle. "I would suggest not delaying. It's almost 3pm. You wouldn't want to lose your advantage when the time, date and moon cycle are all stacked up to your favor."

While Gabriel was creating the summoning circle, Chloe was changing into the robes. She moved into his room for privacy - as though such a thing existed anymore when he could break into her mind like that.

Spending a few more moments alone helped her calm down. And she needed that - she needed to be in just the right state of mind to make this work. Soon, she had purged all thoughts of her father's crazy sex life with people in her age group. She came back into the main room with a folded stack of clothes she had been wearing. These ended up on the couch.

Her extra-curricular studying on this subject was paying off. She knew the symbolic significance of the robes, recognized the patterns behind the incantations and the sacrements. Before she did as he said and recited the incantations, she read it over and asked a few questions about pronunciation - she didn't want any of this going wrong.

Banter was kept at a dead minimum - if either of them said anything funny, it would be that much harder for her to focus on the ritual. It would be hard enough for her not to imagine an otherwise normal summoning circle with the word "Dad" scribbled in with red crayon.

A few last sips of her water. A few deep breaths. Soon, she was ready.

"Here goes."

She knelt down in the summoning circle and began reciting the sacraments.

You'd know it when it happens.

It was unmistakable, like a story out of the Old Testament. To Chloe, her surroundings would slowly mold together and melt into pure, monotonous whiteness. An odorless fog would crawl around the area, seemingly replacing the ground beneath Chloe's feet.

The when it happens part wasn't this, exactly. No, this was simply the stage. The "ground" cracked open, and all at once, Mikhainon's true form shot out of the ground, much smaller than it was in his domain but large enough to be imposing, about twelve feet or so. From this view point, it was easier to make out its features than the last time. It was tall, rigid, with a body made entirely of tentacles, lion legs, and white bird wings tucked behind his body. Beyond the animalistic features, it had golden armor and a rather elaborate crown.

"Chloe..." its booming, vibrating voice started, growls buried underneath its articulate way of speaking. Perhaps it was difficult to make out expressions when this creature barely had a face, but its thousands of eyes were soft as it gazed upon its daughter. "How are you? Is there any reason you summoned me?"

All formality, of course. The real Mikhainon knew why. But Chloe needed to learn to ask things for herself. Its tendrils slithered around the white, empty area in anticipation.

Chloe was on her knees, looking up at the monstrosity she summoned, feeling very small and weak. It took her a moment to remember that she wasn't in any danger. This was her dad.

"...Hi dad. I'm... doing pretty well." It took her another moment to remember why she was supposed to be summoning him. "I was just summoning you to..." Oh man what was that familiar called again? She looked at the fog for a moment, wracking her brain. After a moment, she cleared her throat. "Sorry." She sat up a little straighter and tried to sound more dignified and confident. "I request the service of the familiar Arach."

Chloe should know how this went. As much as this Mikhainon wanted to go easy on her, it couldn't be helped that he was a demon in the higher echelons, and attempting to contain his immense power in the mortal plane would be near impossible. It engulfed the entire area as if the room was suddenly dropped in a pool of raw, heavy energy, grazing on Chloe's skin, slowly creeping into her mind.

Once she made her request, the power began to constrict in her head, similar to what the other Mikhainon simulated in the living room except more raw. Stronger. The kind of magic that slowly spread throughout one's entire body.

When Chloe manages to push the Duke out, the white area would dissipate back into her father's apartment and the familiar, Arach, would be standing on the circle with her name on it.

For a few, blissfully ignorant moments, Chloe almost thought that she would get to skip the part with the mental attacks. She thought that her father would go easy on her, now that there were real risks involved.

Nope.

It caught her off guard. She yelped, then scrambled to remember what she did to push him out the first time. A labored breath, then she tried to recreate it. There were less thoughts about her father's sex life this time, and more focus on the pure act of will that was her telepathic defense.

The room turned back to normal. Chloe closed her eyes and took a deep breath, recovering from the ordeal.

When she opened them again, she was greeted by the sight of a giant, monstrous spider. She flinched, visibly shocked, and nearly jumped to her feet and ran out the door.

"H-hello," she managed with a shudder.

> Arach

For a moment the room was shrouded in a cloud of smoke and dust. Cutting through the darkness were odd shriek-like hissing coming from where the spider-like monstrosity stood. Or was it actually coming from it?

It stood there for a moment, towering above them, swaying slightly side to side on its legs as if it was watching prey. Its eyes were focused on Chloe--silent but one could still hear crackling noises emanating from it as it was carefully studying her. After a moment, it froze, like it had noticed something it must be wary about.

Arach could barely recall what she had been doing prior to now but that didn't matter anymore. There was no mistaking Mikhainon's presence, obviously. If she were summoned by anyone else she'd have gone and decided to have her way but realizing that was not the case, she had to behave.

Her eyes looked towards Mikhainon, her head slightly lowering, before turning to Chloe again. She could recognize her master's magic from her and she inwardly cringed. If she had the nerve, she would question why so but in front of Mikhainon, she almost never did.

It took her a moment before she spoke. "...Yes, greetings," she spoke tentatively. The way she spoke was peculiar; hisses and clicks could be heard from her speech. More importantly was the way she was looking at Chloe calculatingly.

Mikhainon was very, very quietly setting up Chloe's party while she was in a trance. He took her ice cream cake out of the fridge and placed it next to the champagne. As he felt his other him's presence enter the room, he sneaked to the other side of the room and stood next to the light switch.

When Arach said her peace, Mikhainon turned on the lights and the festive music, and rained confetti all over his apartment. With a snap of his fingers, Arach was forced into her default human form, dolled up in a ruffled red dress with a giant ribbon at the back.

"Happy Birthday, honey!" he exclaimed, clapping as he did so. "This is Arach. She's my birthday gift to you! What's better than a familiar for my daughter, right? You can delegate her any task you want. She even has access to all of my knowledge and some of my skills, so she would make a powerful ally and mentor if you choose to use her wisely."

He blew a kazoo.

"Do either of you want cake?"

Chloe blinked. Was this some kind of practical joke? Or something? Chloe came to this room in the mood to summon horrible monstrosities using forbidden knowledge. Now she was covered in game show levels of ceiling confetti, and her 'gift' had taken on an attractive human form with a big red bow attached.

Chloe looked at her father. She looked at Arach. She looked at her father again. When he blew his kazoo, she couldn't take it anymore - she started laughing out loud. It was just too ridiculous, too jarring of a transition. She stood up and brushed some confetti off the robes Gabriel had given her.

"Cake sounds great, actually. Please." She could use some after that ordeal.

While her father got the cake, she extended her hand out to shake Arach's. "A pleasure to meet you, Arach." She was still smiling from her earlier laughter. She assumed that Arach knew this was going to happen, and that she had accepted this job willingly after her father discussed it with her, or something like that.

Arach's attention suddenly snapped away from Chloe, flinching as the room was suddenly flooded by lights and... a bunch of things she'd never really paid any thought to. The music startled her just as much as the lights did but the rain of strips of paper did as much. What she wasn't warned about was when she was suddenly forced to change her shape and found her self in human form. She could say a thing or two about her get up and part of her wanted to retaliate but what could she do, really?

No, actually — she really wanted to retaliate, especially once Mikhainon had declared she was going to be that girl's familiar. She didn't respond to Mikhainon's offer for the cake for the reason that she was trying to wrap her head around the situation. While she was deep in thought, Chloe had approached her with a hand extended in greeting. "A pleasure to meet you, Arach!" she said.

Another calculating pause, and Arach returned the favor, holding Chloe's hand for a very brief handshake before letting to. "...The pleasure is mine, young mistress," she said, her head instinctively bowed.

She could see that, judging by the look on her face, Chloe knew what's going on. There were things Arach wanted to confirm because — she doesn't have complete grasp of everything happening right now. And more importantly,

She turned to Mikhainon, "My Lord, what... why? What is this?" Okay, that didn't come out as articulate as she planned. "I wasn't briefed about this." her tone was controlled, subduing the child-like frustration that was starting to build up.
