Takeda Shujinkō

Manners maketh man

32 | November 15 | Male | Human | Citizen | Blackthorn Security Employee

APPEARANCE
Shujinkō is as clean cut as they come, taking care that his appearance is always impeccable. He dresses business-like and is usually up to date on the latest fashions, though he leans towards function over form. When he can get away with it, he prefers traditional Japanese garments for formal events, showing pride in his heritage.

Shuji stands just just under 171 cm (5'6") tall with a slightly broader than normal frame. He is well toned from a strict exercise and dietary regimen. His back bears a tattoo depicting a Fu Lion surrounded by Peony flowers over a background of clouds. The pinky finger on his right hand is a prosthetic, a reminder of a failed relationship and the lengths he went through to make it work.

PERSONALITY
Shujinkō is a pillar of affability and etiquette. He approaches every situation with care and dedication and rarely goes in without a plan.
He prefers to take time to think over his options before coming to a decision, but can act rashly if he needs to. He tries to be courteous to others and shows patience with them up to a limit. However there is an aloofness with his courtesy that leads some to think of Shujinkō as being uncaring.

If his limit is reached, Shujinkō will not necessarily change his outward demeanor but his internal views of the person will change, altering how he interacts with them in small ways. It would take someone doing something pretty horrible to him or someone he cares about to make Shujinkō break decorum and lash out openly.

Shujinkō, despite his hardened personality, has hobbies including flower arrangement and Aikido. He enjoys going out with friends and drinking and also cooking for the rate times he entertains guests.

Due to the nature of his powers Shunjikō has what can be described as a casual relationship with danger. Being aware of what he's capable of, he often plans around the assumption that he won't be seriously injured in an endeavor. This led to him being called suicidal by some of his former associates.
On the reverse of this, his powers have made him intensely insecure about romance and sexual relationships with others. He tends to shy away from the affection of others, particularly if they are too forward as he sees this as a byproduct of his power in effect rather than legitimate attraction.

POWERS
Attraction Aura.
Shujinkō has an aura that causes a seemingly random subset of people to become intensely infatuated with him. This infatuation causes people to become less inhibited around him and more forward in showing affection, though the degree to which this occurs depends on the individual.
initial exposure occurs when Shujinkō is within sight of the affected individual for more than a few seconds. After vision of him is broken, the effect rapidly diminishes but lingers for some time after. Subsequent exposure can either strengthen and further ingrained the effect into the affected individual or conversely slowly inoculate them to the power. There is no hard or fast rule for which will occur.
Shujinkō has no way of turning this power off naturally and he is loathe to use a power nullification bracelet as this would also remove his other power, as the two seem to be intrinsically tied together.

(OoC: Whether your character is affected by the aura, how severely if affects them, and how it causes them to interact with Shuji in the long term are entirely up to each member who chooses to plot with him.)

Protagonist's Fortune.
Shuji has an incredible personal luck aura that gets him out of as much trouble as it gets him into. The magic causes unlikely contrivances to stack up together to put him in situations that could easily be called ridiculous. Like a magical Rube Goldberg device, these small coincidences steamroll into situations involving mistaken identity, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and generally getting in over his head.

But the power isn't without it's perks. It won't allow Shuji to die or even be critically wounded, affording him a degree of invulnerability that seems to come down to blind luck. He slips and falls, bruising his head but narrowly making the shot aimed for his heart miss. His drink spills, thwarting an attempted poisoning. Etc.
Shuji has learned to use this power to his advantage, throwing himself in harm's way to protect people who hire him, knowing that he will come out relatively unscathed.

This power isn't absolute protection however. If he isn't quick enough to save his charge, for example. Or if someone with more powerful luck manipulation sets their powers to specifically counteract his own. He can also submit himself to lesser forms of harm, dampening the power to a degree with sheer force of will.

HISTORY
Shujinkō's childhood was one wrought with danger and ludicrous situations. His parents being away on business much of the time, he was more or less left to deal with these things on his own. He attempted several times to end his life in his early teens due to these circumstances. But every time he tried, it seemed that dumb luck prevented anything more than superficial injuries.

Somewhere along the line, he fell in with a Yakuza family during one of these strings of contrived coincidences that seemed to constantly plague him.
What should have ended with Shujinkō dead in an alley way somewhere actually resulted in him being brought on as a personal bodyguard to the Oyabun of the family. He was reluctant at first, but went along with it more out of fear of what might happen to his parents as opposed to what would happen to him.

This new family of his though, they loved watching him get into the most ridiculous of situations and get himself right back out. They cheered him on, encouraged him to embrace this facet of his life. He began to flourish in this new life, finding not quite peace but acceptance. His parents were worried when they realized what their son had gotten mixed up into, and eventually cut off contact with him.

Life continued on like this for Shujinkō for nearly two decades until he met and fell in love with a girl. She seemed unaffected by the aura that caused him so much trouble, and in fact in the beginning she outright hated him. Shujinkō was smitten. After seeing her for some time, he wanted to marry her, but her father refused to give his blessing to a member of the Yakuza. With a heavy heart, he went to his Oyabun and requested that he be allowed to leave the Yakuza. The boss told him he would allow this if Shujinkō would allow them to cut off his pinky finger, assuming that the young man's incredible fortune would prevent this. However Shujinkō agreed and when it was all said and done, he presented the severed finger to his Oyabun and left the life behind him.

His marriage was doomed to fail however. Between his aura making people throw themselves at him and his relative inability to work a 'normal' job, the relationship was strained from day one. They divorced soon after, and Shujinkō fell into a depression. He couldn't go back to his family, his pride wouldn't allow it. And even though he was vaguely aware that he had these powers, he couldn't very well openly use them. He received a letter one day about an ilsand called Manta Carlos, a clerical error sending it to him instead of the vampire who lived next door (not that Shujinkō ever knew it). This was the kick in the pants he needed to get up and move on with his life, start over somewhere where no one knew him and maybe he could be more open with his powers.
